Awesome video Matt!! Remember to avoid carding the film while it’s hot to avoid any distortion, 5-10 sec should be plenty. Great Video!!

I’m a super amateur when it comes to tinting, but I’ve done 3M crystalline on my car and found the old school method you have demonstrated in your other videos to be sufficient. I tried one of your alternate methods from one of your videos (heating the film while it’s mostly off of the glass) and that was the only time I’ve ruined a piece of tint. I’ll leave these advanced techniques to you pros. Thanks for all your videos!

I do a fair bit of crystalline tints, the method I was taught is a little different (make a wet "H" shape, then put the tint on it, tape the 4 corners and 2 in the top and bottom middle,then shrink the 4 Large pockets) but I really want to try this out tomorrow, could save time not having to get the glass wet.
@DetroitTintStudio

that's awesome to hear! definitely not my specialty
@pedrocervantes2379
@pedrocervantes2379 5 лет назад
Hi there, the “H” pattern is one way but can get though sometimes in my opinion. We recommend a “double H” pattern to break it up into quadrants, sealing the bottom and heating the finger up. Or breaking up the individual fingers like shown in this video. It all depends on the car and curvature of the glass. This method works great for Model 3 rear windows..

I’ve always heard Crystalline was a pain to shrink. It reminds me of the old Huper Optik film I used to deal with. That required a similar pocket shrink method to shrink. I use Xpel now and it shrinks so easily it just makes life so much better. Thanks for the vid!
@DetroitTintStudio
@DetroitTintStudio 5 лет назад
yea it is another beast like you said with huper. if it makes sense for ya to carry then this method would be your primary but I just really liked how simplistic this method looked. I love featuring things I haven't really seen before.

Really appreciate this video, I had a hard time with a window film, it's new in the market and it's really thick, I didn't use this method, now I think i could do it. When I get it done I will let you know how it went. And again thanks, I subscribed to your channel. 🤝

Well done! Funny that it's a "new" technique, I had gravitated towards it naturally after a year or two when I started dry shrinking early 2000's here in Australia. Nowadays I don't use shrink aids or even clean the outside of the screen properly, just a light wipe with a rag, then a wet" H". I lay up as usual, trim off with some excess left, tack with card in centre then pull slightly to stretch to sides and card across and up & down sides then shrink as you did using my hand to hold the sections in place instead of tape, but I don't sweep it out at all with a card, justly a light sweep with my hand. You sort of get to know when it's shrunk and coincidentally sit great on dot matrix! I used it on carbon films, nanoceramic's, HP metallised & Full Metal sputtered films from Suntek, Llumar, Johnson, 3m,Bekaert....... It's pretty much the only way I shrink rears. I'd be surprised if you don't automatically start doing it without really realising! 👍

*_Your air pocket shrinking is very beneficial._****-I am watching with interest-*
@tbon22s
@tbon22s 4 года назад
The key is to get the air to shrink under the film by slowly sending air in the air pockets you make. Once the edge is sealed, let it sit for 5-10 seconds before touching it, then add a slight bit of heat on top to squeegee down; that will prevent distorting the adhesive in it. With 200 micro layers of film, the shrinking mainly occurs UNDER the film versus traditionally on top.

I come from a metal forming background. This process is backwards from what I would do. I would work the fingers from the interior of the glass to the edge. Light heat using fast movements at the tip of the finger, and as I get to the edge slower broader sweeps of the gun. Again from the metal perspective if I shrink the perimeter first there is going to be a shit ton of pressure in the field. Work the stress center to edge. Being a soft pliable film there is the additional challenge of capturing, or restricting air at the parameter. Why not work with physics instead of against it?

So I got one serious question in the beginning when u use the heat gun how do you get all the scratches off the tint
@DetroitTintStudio
@DetroitTintStudio 5 лет назад
those fine scratches are all on the clear release liner. then you would remove that layer to expose the glue and slap it on the inside of the window. no damage to the film layer
