Eddy Grant left British Guiana and came to Britain in 1960. Five years later, aged just 17, he founded The Equals, a pioneering multi-racial band that hit the top of the charts in 1968 with the classic Baby Come Back.
Eddy's songs were a product of the times, blending international influences whilst writing about what it meant to be young and black, living in London. Songs like "Police On My Back" and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys" continue to resonate today and in this interview Eddy talks to Alex Dyke about the success and the impact of the Equals. Eddy also reflects on a car crash that nearly cost him his life and his subsequent heart attack and collapsed lung in 1971, following which he left the Equals and the UK.
