And in a perfect world, Transformers 4 would make money on its first weekend and then die a quick death at the box office because only the biggest nerds for this crap will go see this.
Don't watch the trailers due to spoilers. If you haven't seen Ethan Hawk in Predestination then you must watch it. Tip: If you can remember the very what Ethan Hawk says, in the beginning, it will help you understand the twist at the end.
Did anyone else feel bummed out when it ended? it passed by fast. I know it was a happy ending but like man! idk loved it but it was like when I beat a good game or read a good story and your like sad its over. Cause it was so good and now its gone and becomes old lol :( idk how to explain hopefully someone knows what im talking bout. Movie was awesome!
Definitely want to see it again, my grade is 9/10. Even though this probably won't do nearly as well as it should, due to poor marketing, "Edge of Tomorrow" will have great Blu-Ray sales numbers, and become an eventual cult hit.
I know it is not exactly what you saying, but I was bummed that they did the happy ending because was too cliché. I think it would have been better if Cruise, Blunt, and everyone in J squad stay dead with everyone thinking them as deserters instead of heroes who saved the world. But that is a minor nitpick for an overall great movie
My expectations were low when I walked into the theater. I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised over and over again. An absolutely fantastic film.
I worked on this movie, all plastic and soft foam, what a laugh as to how serious the actors took it, the props where very good and so where the sets, awesome. Thanks Tom for all the coffee.
I really appreciated how badass Emily Blunt is in this film, how respected she is, and how the character is presented. It did not feel heavy-handed at all. Disney could learn a thing or two from this.
I know that this might not be known to most people but this movie is actually based on a Japanese novel and has also been made into a manga called All You Need Is Kill and I urge you all to check it out. The character that Emily Blunt portrays is the female character in this story and it just gets better and better through each chapter. Anyways I can't wait to see this movie I've been hyped up once I first saw the trailer. Glad to see that it wasn't a let down.
All of these legitimately great action movies nowadays ("Dredd," "Edge of Tomorrow," "John Wick," "The Raid," etc.) are passing under the mainstream radar to make room for franchise films and shaky-cam. Grant, I love a franchise film as much as the next guy if it's done well (Marvel), but when down-and-dirty, old-fashioned only get a cult following, it makes me weep once again for the current state of Hollywood.
I was too stupid to realize how good the movie was when o watched it 5 years ago. I just rewatched it 10 minutes ago and DAMN! That was one heck of a movie
My favourite Tom cruise movie by FAR. For once I actually loved his ACTING. Beautifully written movie. Lowkey kind of tragic tho. Even the ending. Falling in love with someone over what feels like a year, and she in her own mind is only just meeting you. I loved how they conveyed how long he was actually living through that same day. And it was kind of shocking when we realized in that barn scene, that it was an endless and depressing cycle for him
Nice review, Chris. I will pretty much watch anything with Tom Cruise in it. The guy just fully commits to his roles and is essentially the most consistently egoless A-lister I've ever seen. So I'm glad to hear this is good.
I've watched this movie 20+ times & its still worth every second reliving this incredible film. I had no expectations the 1st time & I think that made the film impact me even more. Arguably Tom Cruises best work 👌
Tom Cruise is incredibly dedicated to delivering good action. I almost feel guilty for not having seen some of his early hits. I really hope there will be a follow-up to Jack Reacher. That's a great character....
One of my top 5 movies of all time. Nearly perfect on so many levels - I was even moved by the love he developed for Rita. Tom Cruise's best role by far.
I've been holding off watching reviews of the film because everybody was saying it's so good. I literally just got home from seeing it & it was fucking amazing.
yea i knew chris liked the movie and other reviewers too but i didnt feel like watching it for some reason, i guess thats why its underrated since people dont give it a shot, i recently watched the movie since i bought the manga "all you need is kill" which the movie bases the story off so i gave the movie a try and it was amazing, wasnt a fan of the ending but whole movie as whole was good
I personally loved how we never knew what "day" it was. They kept throw us off as to which loop we were in. It was so satisfying to see a very well crafted and written sci-fi.
So stupid how people shit on Tom Cruise. He's always been one of my favorite actors and he's a badass when it comes to doing his own stunts, which i really appreciate as a movie goer.
Hey Chris just saw the film on DVD today and I came to watch this video...you were right this movie was one of the best Sci-Fi action movies I had ever seen..the experience of Tom's character is like playing a video game over and over every time he died it was like yourself resetting the game to start over with the knowledge already in hand of what might come next in order to change the outcome...much kudos to everyone who had anything to do with the film it was one of the best
Doing a Chris Stuckmann review marathon. I own this movie on blu Ray and it is one of my all time favorites. I found the 3rd act extremely thrilling and honestly didn't know what was going to happen at the end. It was not predictable for me at all. Great review Chris!
The way you talk and discribed the movies its great and you make me love this art even more! I think you are a great person man, keep going. Greetings from argentina (sorry for my english)
I was a bit curious Chris if you like it so much and didn't really have a problem with it and it's such a good film, what made you hesitate and not go to A+?
This has to be one of the best action movie ever made. The performances by Tom cruise and Emily blunt are fantastic. I never knew that Emily blunt could kick so much ass. The humor was minimal and perfect, the action scenes were amazing, the concept was great, the aliens were scary. Although it's based on a comic but to adapt it to movie is a completely different ball game and they did a great job. I wish it could make the money it deserved. Mostly the sequel won't happen but if it did then it would be fantastic. I would give this movie 10 out of 10
I love your reviews, you've saved me a lot of money from seeing bad films that I thought would be good, and you let me know whenever there's a diamond in the rough movie like this, which I had honestly written off after seeing the first trailer. Because of guys like you and Jeremy Jahns, I am THE movie guru whenever I'm out with family/friends trying to pick out a show to watch.
SPOILERS!!! I think the movie's only major flaw was that it had a flawless happy ending. I would have preferred it, if he had died in order to save everyone. Personally I believe, that this is an American thing (and I'm not criticizing or judging- just observing). You guys love to see your heroes emerge from great peril unharmed ;) Other than that I really agree with you. I'm not a very big fan of Tom Cruise and I was more in the mood for movie theatre popcorn than for the film itself, when we decided to go and see it. Great popcorn, great movie :D
+Jeshoel The ended in the novel/amga from wich this movie is based is much, much darker and heartbreaking. you should check it out ! All you need is kill is the name of the manga.
Also, in the last act of the movie, when Cruise loses his ability to reset the day, the movie becomes a generic kill the big monster movie. The movie loses its edge without the time travel.
ive just watched this on my ipad in bed, nearly two years after turning my nose up at the chance to see this in IMAX. Big mistake...HUGE!!! Absolutely blew me away. Wasnt expecting that at all! Ps: your reviews are the best! My 13yo nephew go to the cinema every week. We then analyse it, score it, then check out The Guardian's review (we're British), then your review. Love it!
Hey Chris, At first I was going to ignore this, as the trailers made it seem to be in the same alley as Independence Day. After watching your review I decided to check it out yesterday, and I was blown away! It felt like the perfect marriage between movies and video games, and was surprisingly touching, although being a summer blockbuster. Thank you for your transparent and honest review, and keep up the good work!
Hey Mr. Stuckmann! I just wanted to say that you are the main person that actually inspired me to see this movie because I didn't think it would actually be so enthralling. I watched this review and 5 Reasons Why You Should See It video plenty of times before watching it and I agreed with EVERYTHING you said. This truly is a fantastic movie and I had a BLAST watching it in 3D!! Thank you so much!! 😊😊😊😊❤️
I wasn't planning on going to watch this movie, but i have to tell you Chris after i watched this review i bought couple of tickets for me and my friends. i'm totally pumped up for this movie!
This was simply sensational, and I really can't think of too many ways they could have improved it. I thought that they would have shoehorned in a massive love story towards the end but it was very tastefully done. Fantastic action, great acting all round, the best film I've seen this year so far.
I always take your reviews into consideration with what I'm expecting to see before watching a movie! You definitely have credibility and I'm looking forward to seeing Edge of Tomorrow!
Great review, Chris. Unfortunately, I won't get to see it opening weekend but I will for sure be checking it out. Much more interested in the film now.
Every time i feel sci-fi-ey and needs a movie fix, I find myself going back to this film. I know, it's a pun in itself, reliving the film again and again. But strangely, it doesn't feel old. And dang, it is really a well scripted and crafted movie. And Emily Blunt rocks it too as the full metal bitch. ;-)
I've lost my love for movies over the last few years, for some reason. Much prefer documentaries these days. Having said that, I'm so glad I watched this. It was the best movie I have probably enjoyed in my entire life. I'm definitely not a Tom Cruise fan and had no idea who Emily Blunt was, however I've seen it at least 10 times now. Love it. Love it. Love it.
So happy that you enjoyed this movie! I've been following it for quite some time now, but to hear that it's good is such a relief, I've been really looking forward to this one. Great review Chris, as always!
Totally agree about The Bourne Identity and the camera work. The shaky cam worked perfectly in that film, so I'm interested to see how this movie is shot. Now I just need to get a friend to see it with me :)
It's been a lot by time since I've had this much fun watching a movie. It was well made, original, and it was beautifully crafted. I do see complaints about the ending a lot, but I think the ending is very logical. The blood of the alpha triggers the reaction for the omega to turn back time. The omega died, but it's blood was on Cage. You could say his death or the alphas death triggered the reaction, but it was triggered nonetheless. Those of you who want to say, "it ruined he dark feel of it" I say unto you. If you want every movie with a dark point to end with a dead main, you need help.
Great Review Chris. I agree this was a Welcomed Surprise I loved it. Bill Paxton is always a joy to have on screen he's cool. Cruise is at his Best Blunt stands out as Ellen Ripley's daughter because she has that feel of her fierce and bad ass ways of fighting. I gave it an A.
Absolutely loved this movie and have watched it dozens of times. It's one you wish they would make a sequel for somehow because you just want to see more but you know there is no need or point in having one. This definitely deserves to be bumped up to an A+ Chris
Thank you for helping spread the word Chris. This movie is a gem that like a few others (The Shawshank Redemption) was not properly appreciated in terms of box office numbers. It is a very special film to me because it helped reignite my passion for original films in the wake of all these super hero movies and prequels/ sequels. I’ve seen it ten times (never seen a movie in theaters more than twice previously) and attribute much of its greatness to how lean the story and editing is; there’s just no fat on this movie. Everything serves a purpose and that alone makes it special. Throw in spectacular performances by Cruise/ Blunt, great action, wicked humor, brilliant love story (if understated), great sci-fi and you have something more than just a summer block buster. Cruise gets big points for being willing to play a coward. I was getting tired of the same old roles from him. His comedic timing and character arc are memorable. Blunt wasn’t even on my radar before but, wow, she is unbelievably talented. I’ve retroactively caught up on all her previous roles based on her performance in EoT. Once again thank you for helping spread the word. You have my subscription and I will follow the channel closely going forward.
Forced into a happy ending? Without spoiling anything to everyone id say the "happy ending" is nothing more than a big ironic laughter about the whole thing... Its the best kind of ending this movie could have had in my honest opinion..
Decnet01 But it's not an ironic laugh. (It's super hard to explain what I mean without spoiling things). It would've been the most refreshing Tom Cruise movie ending, but this way, it all sits nicely for him at the end without any sound or reasonable logic, just for the sake of that closing shot.
You should read about the original ending. It's actually really dark, so in the final act after Cage, Rita, and J Squad lands in Paris one of the member gets separated from the group, he then fights an alpha and accidentally kills it. You then see the omega reset the entire and you cut to Cage in the dropship on D-Day, he laughs hysterically knowing they will all die, the dropship gets hit. Screen cuts to black.
Introvertist **TO ANYONE READING THIS**THERE WILL BE SPOILERS** I don't understand what you mean by "without any sound or reasonable logic". The ending made perfect sense, and I'm glad it was a happy ending. I get so tired of so many movies trying to be edgy by killing off all the main characters or making some irritating twist implying that the bad guys, whoever they may be, aren't really gone or have actually won. The twist in this movie was the opposite. They sacrifice themselves, and only through doing so did Cruise inherit the alien's powers and survive. That chuckle at the end, at least in my opinion, implied that he was going to have to explain everything to Blunt again, and knowing her and her personality at this point shows that it is going to be fun to, essentially, get to know her and her to know him all over again.
Balthazzarr But it didn't, though. *SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS* He kills the brain - which makes the time jump possible (as Blunt explains: the blood is the impulse, and then the Omega stimulates the jump - once the Omega died, it shouldn't matter if he was doused in blood because the Omega was dead.) THEN, he wakes up earlier, except somehow the aliens aren't alive - we're handed some pitiful explanation for it, and that's that. On your other point, I find it interesting you say that, because more commonly I see stupid endings where it all turns out happy and convenient (as this one was) "against all odds." Constantly. I haven't seen enough of the main characters dying for their actual sacrifice to have any effect on me. When Cruise and Blunt died, I was amazed. It was a brilliant ending. Their sacrifice was felt. And then it was undone.
Great movie and great review. Totally on point regarding movie references, but I would have included Groundhog Day in that hybrid. The story was far more imaginative and clever than I expected and it surprises me that now, a few years later, it's kind of forgotten. Really enjoy your work.
This is one of my favorite movies! Even after watching it a dozen times. Just recently came across your channel and I wondered what you thought of it. Of course you loved it too. They need an oscar for editing! It's like Saving Private Ryan meets Groundhog's Days, I love it!
The only thing I don't get about this movie is how did Emily Blunt know she had lost her power? If she would have done a test to see if she still had the power she would be dead.
idk if you've seen this but you can't say it was a long shot until you seen it, ive seen aliens and term and I think edge has a bright future to be up there with the legends if not one in the next 15 years, yes its that good
This makes me very happy! I was hoping that this film would be good, because the trailer gave me very high hopes. It's satisfying to hear your glowing review of the film. I'll see it as soon as I can! We need a good summer sci-fi after the mildly disappointing Elysium last year.
Great review Chris. The trailer to this film reminded me of Oblivion and I absolutely hated that movie, but I'll do my best to give this a chance as your judgement is usually accurate.
It looked kind of generic even though the premise seemed interesting. It also seemed like Tom was playing the same character that he always does. That does get tiring. Glad to hear that isn't the case though; I'll probably end up watching it.
I think one it's Tom Cruise and his last 2 films Jack Reacher and Oblivion were either Boring Or Meh, giving a bot of damage. And the trailers, while interesting, didn't catch too much attention.
crazyangst12 I thought the marketing to this movie was horrible, but after seeing the film I see that it's a tough one to promote. Sad though because I feel that's going to cause the box office to be low. I see this one burning for a long time on home video though due to positive word of mouth.
Chris, whenever you want to use an still image, make sure it covers the whole frame. Like at 3:58, you can see a thin line of the background on the edges.
The worst part is hearing the weeaboos talk about the manga during the movie. "This didn't happen in the manga, that was different in the manga, oh the manga was so much grittier on this part", and realizing they never read the book it all came from - and never learned how to shut up during a movie. That aside, both the plot details and the way the plot unfolds is heavily modified from the original. This movie takes place in England, not Japan, the way the "power" is gained and lost is different, and the end-game (both the end of the war and the loop breaking) is very different. Having loved the book thoroughly, I was still able to enjoy the movie adaptation - just don't go into the theater expecting anything other than a "loosely based on the original" plot, and enjoy it for what it is, a really good planet-side military "sci-fi" movie that keeps the hollywood taint to a minimum. On a personal note, I think the parts I enjoyed the most were the loops when Tom just gave up. The one where he actually avoided fighting and just went into a bar was superb - the sheer helplessness, the feeling of nothing changing no matter what you do, it was really good.
Bruce Wayne as alex eton said, it comes out on Friday in the UK ***** In the UK, there is a Cinema chain called Cineworld and they have this thing called an Unlimited Card. It means I can see as many movies as I want for £15.90 a month.
Edge of Tomorrow is the best movie I missed in cinema and is quite honestly the best sci-fi action of 2010s easily. One of those very rare effects movies that age gracefully.
"Minority Report meets Halo" Really? I always go with Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers. Anyway, yes, I also loved the movie and I was very apprehensive too since I read the book it was based on and loved it. And you know how it is when they make a movie based on a good book. However I think this is one of the few movies that actually improves on the book, story-wise at least. Cage and Rita from the movie felt much more real than in the book and that let me really get into the characters better. Probably my only beef with the movie is that Rita is not expanded as much. If the movie had a slightly bigger budget we could've given Rita her own arc like the book did.
Chris since a take in consideration your opinion in movies that I've never seen before and I was about to see this movie again for the 5 time, I was intrigued what was your opinion about it, and you are almost correct, because this movie is absolutely a A+. Nevertheless I love your work I'm a huge fan, keep I coming those awesome reviews
When Cage eventually dies of old age he probably has to relive everything once more haha. Also, in one of the scenes where he relives the helicopter drop he is the first to jump as opposed to being the last and yet he ends up in the same spot on the beach, that is weird right?
Jae Enceeti, I was also thinking that Cage must be immortal now. Something else to consider is that the rest of humanity may never die since the day restarts with his death; it seems that the day will restart for the entire world, like it did repeatedly, not just for him. Edited to add: Then again, he knows how to lose his reset power if he wants to lose it.
Can u do another blu ray video soon. I really enjoyed your first one, and I've noticed that you have gotten a lot more since the last one. You said you would do more, so do them
I heard that that this movie is based on a manga named All You Need Is Kill, good story and would recommend to those who watched the movie. It's more gorey than you think
Thing is, the movie was made before the manga. They only started releasing the manga after the movie was 90% done. I think they only really made it to promote the movie and the Japanese Light Novel.
@@alexandersison2030 "Edge of Tomorrow (marketed as Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow on home media, or simply Live Die Repeat)[4][nb 1] is a 2014 American science fiction action film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Doug Liman directed the film based on a screenplay adapted from the 2004 Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka." What drugs are you on again?
Why?!?!? Can't we just have just this version and manga version, I think they're both good their own way. Why does everything always has to be EXACTLY like the manga/source with you otaku hipsters...
I wanted to see this since they released the trailer and now you got me super pumped to see this. Pleeeease don't suck. How do you compare to Elysium because I enjoyed Elysium alot?
Another accurate great review. Thanks, Chris. (I'm catching up). What a wonderful movie! I always wondered if the title of the movie and lack of marketing lessened the appeal.
Thank you for saying exactly what I think. I can't add a syllable, you nailed it. I'm surprised The Fault in Our Stars beat it out on opening weekend. It is classic good sci fi. I find myself clicking on it every time I see the icon on On Demand! One of TCs best.
