they burn the brush (fuel) in an area they control before the fire gets there to help contain its spread. Look up Backburn or Burnout.

The idea is to set it on fire and then put it out. Making a perimeter around the area that the fire is out of control. when the fire arrives there. it cannot pass, because there will be no material to be burned. The fire does not cross this burnt bush street. This is done when there is no chance to control the fire within the perimeter.

I live in forest falls so far it appears they have saved our little town by doing extensive prep work and only one small cottage has been lost. Unfortunately 90% of the power line poles were destroyed from mountain home village into ff. Edison is bringing several large generators sometime next week. These poles were recently brought up to current fire code 80 feet high. In many spots the flames were over 100 feet high with fire tornadoes that can RIP you apart. All the firefighters can do sometimes is wait and watch for an opportunity to fight. Our brave and heroic firefighters have done a fantastic job. Unfortunately the fire crossed over 38 and is threatening angelus oaks and several other mountain communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they desperately fight this extremely dangerous fire in high winds.

Its not that easy to put out a wildfire, especially one this size, and the firefighters must be exhausted from the heat and weight of their suits. They are trying to incinerate the remaining dry brush so the approaching fire will not have fuel to burn
