Dennis Martinez rode a devastating breaking ball from the streets of Granada, Nicaragua to the major leagues. Signed off the amateur circuit by the Baltimore Orioles for a mere $3,000, he was unlikely to become a household name, but he did just that on July 28th, 1991 when he pitched a perfect game for the Montreal Expos at Dodger Stadium.
Players Mentioned: Roberto Clemente, Juan Marichal, Tony Chevez, Mark Fidrych, Mike Flanagan, Eddie Murray, Tony Gwynn, Chris Gwynn, Mark Gardner, Ron Hassey, Len Barker, Larry Walker, Mike Morgan, Alfredo Griffin
Music Credit: Silicon Estate, Chris Haugen, Tim Robinson

As a Orioles fan since the 60s I enjoyed watching him pitch.

As an Expos fan, thank you for this. Dennis has been overshadowed by another former Expos pitcher named Martinez, but he was very good for a very long time. He was such a dignified player, he deserved to reach perfection.

You're very welcome! I've always admired Montreal's dedicated fan base. I'm am Orioles fan, and unfortunately their lore only tells part of his storied career.

He had a few rough seasons in the mid 80's and but he was consistently good for a long time. One of the most underrated pitchers of his era.

I’m a lifelong New Yorker and Mets fan, but was lucky enough to go to the 1983 World Series between the Phillies and the Orioles. My uncle, who was a Philly guy, knew where the players came out after the game, so we stayed there and, with a lot of other people, waited for autographs. Most guys were actually fairly obliging, but the coolest of all of them was Dennis Martinez. He signed everything that was put in front of him. When he finally had to get on the bus, he went in and hung out the window, signing everything for as long as he was able. He became my favorite baseball player after that, and he remains so to this day. Thanks so much for this video, and all of the videos you put up here. Always quality stuff here. As a Mets fan, any chance I can get you to do something on the ‘69 series against your O’s?

Thanks for these stories and endorsement of Dennis' character. It lines up with everything I've read about him. And yeah! I could definitely do something on the '69 series. The footage on it is actually pretty good for that era, and it was one of the more memorable series to be played. Great idea!

I appreciate the support! Nothing wrong with being underground, maybe the mainstream baseball community will come around eventually.

Great video. The footage of Dennis driving the Blazer around made me LOL. ... Also, I'm Saturday morning binging Ren and Stimpy for the first time in forever, so that freaked me out for a second. haha
@Hatbilly
@Hatbilly Год назад
Great minds think alike! The guy singing in the Blazer montage is SNL writer Tim Robinson, his show "I Think You Should Leave" is a new favorite of mine, you'd love it.

Hey boss thanks for sharing Dennis' story. I'm a relatively new baseball fan, and I've been trying to learn about the history of the league. I've become invested in the legacy of the Montreal Expos, so I found this spotlight on Dennis really fascinating. Going to watch his perfect game performance soon when I get the time.

Yes! El Presidente! I was about four or five years old and recall seeing his highlights with the Expos on TWIB and I was officially a Brewers/A'S/ Expos fan as a little runt 😂
@Hatbilly

Glad I picked one of your favorites! You chose a lot of cool small market teams as a little guy, that's awesome!

@MiLB Hatbilly I grew up in Milwaukee. I'll always pull for the hapless small markets...even if it means painfully regretting that decision lol

Well done. I remember the day he did that. Unfortunately, it was a West Coast Sunday game and we didn't hear about it until the 11 pm news that night.

Thanks! That's the harsh reality of those time zones and the limited baseball coverage that came with it.

In 1981 or ‘82 our Little League team took a train from Northern Maine up to Montreal for an Expos game. I remember Gary Carter catching for Montreal.
@Hatbilly
@Hatbilly Год назад
That sounds like a great experience! Gary Carter was actually on the Dodgers bench for the game I covered, he had caught the day before, splitting time with fellow veteran Mike Scioscia.

I would have never guessed Ron Hassey as the catcher, that would have been a real obscure callback. I grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and the Cubs and Expos were both in the NL East and I saw Dennis Martinez alot and he was always really good. A true pro and seemingly ageless.
@Hatbilly
@Hatbilly Год назад
Funny enough, Gary Carter was on the Dodgers bench for this one. I usually just assume he was behind the plate for every big Expos moment. 😅
@aarond23
@aarond23 Год назад
I would have guessed Mike Fitzgerald...but yeah Carter was long gone and even past the Mets at that point..but I think Carter is the Expos all time franchinse leader in WAR by catcher by 20 points I would guess, no one before him or after him

And eight years later David Cone of the Yankees would return the favor by tossing a perfect game against the Expos.

When I was a kid, I used to think that Dennis and Tippy Martinez were brothers. I thought it was so cool that two brothers were on the same major league team and was right-handed and the other a lefty. Then I found out I was an idiot...🤣
@Hatbilly
@Hatbilly Год назад
Don't feel bad! I also had to double check that there was no relation. Say they sent a scout all the way to Nicaragua to scout Dennis and found out his brother pitched too, I'd sign em both, too!
