The 2023 Abarth 500e represents a new take on the hot hatch. Gone are the days of a small but powerful engine with a rorty exhaust note in a lightweight body. Yep, this is an electric car with a relatively low amount of power and heavy kerb weight.
That's right; the EV successor to the Abarth 595 might not sound that appealing on paper, but it's out to prove that there's a lot more to a hot hatch than just the numbers. And yes, it has a divisive electric sound generator to make it feel more, well, Abarth - according to the ears, at least.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Clearly heads to Italy to put the hotter version of the Fiat 500e through its paces to see if it has genuine hot-hatch chops or not and is, therefore, worthy of the Abarth badge.
