Canuck fan here, thanks for doing this. Its also worth mentioning that the Canucks have 5 prospects in the top 50 (Petterson is on the top of that list) If I recall correctly, the rest of the teams typically have 2 or 3 at most. There's good cause to be optimistic about the future of the Canucks, but I think you nailed it about their need to bulk up, since that has already been an ongoing problem.

He hit everything in sight and showed a great wrist shot in year 1, but I think both things have disappeared due to lack of confidence. He used to shoot randomly without driving the net, now he drives the net and never shoots. Next year hopefully he'll bring both elements along with at least a couple hits per game.

So it begins! I honestly don't see him stating at centre, with all accounts---he's not ready---but with time and perhaps a stint in Utica---I see him being moved there though eventually. Especially depending on what they do in the draft this year and free agency of course. Great vid as usual Shannon!

Great Video! I know the Canucks need Dmen in the worst way and i hope we draft either Hughes or Dobson at 7th next month. But if Brady Tkachuk is available at 7 which is unlikely i would love the fit on the canucks LW beside Pettersson and Boeser or i would love to see Oliver Wahlstrom who is already 6'1 205 lbs and can snipe and crash the net on the 2nd line with Horvat and Goldobin/Baertschi. Either way the Canucks are going to get a great player at 7th. With all that said, just having Boeser and Pettersson on the PP at the same time is going to be much watch TV for the next 10 years! The new generation Canucks starts in 4 months!

@davideaston6944
@davideaston6944 6 лет назад
Obviously, this was pre-Hughes draft, who most are saying makes the team this season, let alone next... So, that leaves room for moving a Tanev (perfect world, he stays, but, as most valuable piece available for a trade to get "that guy" up front that's going to add the skilled-physical compoent, then...). I sure hope they convince Tryamkin to return. His one year showed SO MUCH potential to be a great behemoth on the blue line. Cheers! Looking forward to the development of these guys.

Ink James Neal to a 3 year deal for 5.5 per and slot him on the right side next to Pettersson. Let's see people push the golden boy around with Neal watching his back. Tough, gritty, and skilled. Then you could try this opening night: Baertschi - Horvat - Boeser Goldobin - Pettersson - Neal Eriksson - Sutter - Virtanen Granlund - Gaudette - Gaunce

Elias Pettersson mostly played RW in the SHL this year, same as Boeser. I don't think it's a good idea to make him a first C right away in the NHL. Do you separate them in that case or play one as LW? Dahlen has, as you mentioned, great chemistry with Pettersson but plays LW.
@Rindiculousfun

Pettersson is going to become a centre in the NHL eventually I'm pretty sure, but I definitely agree he's going to be a RW next year. That makes us question our centre depth for now until he transitions to that position.

Late to the party, but I think the Canucks right now can sit back a little on looking for a big tough winger. They've got two shots with Lind and Gadjovich, neither of whom is a lock, but both are looking good. There's also the hope that Virtanen keeps improving. If he shows the same improvement he showed from 2 seasons ago to last season, then he could move up higher in the lineup.

@6hughmungus9
@6hughmungus9 6 лет назад
I like the way Benning has avoided drafting prospects in the later rounds just for their size. He's been able to find some great diamonds in those rounds (Gaudette, Palmu, Lockwood) that he might have passed on if he was going for size. See Mike Gillis' drafting record for the exact opposite. Shannon's right about the Canucks needing size, but I think those are the kind of guys you can find in free agency without breaking the bank, or trade for them without sacrificing anything massive like you would have to for a starting goalie, top 6 fwd or top 3 d. There are a few prospects in the system with size (Gadjovic - though he's not overly physical, Tryamkin, MacKewen) who look like decent bets to at least make it to the NHL. Even if they don't make it and the Canucks need to go out and acquire those role player types, that's a better issue to have then trying to find the key pieces you need to build a contender through trades/FA because you drafted a bunch of big bodies who didn't produce.

I think Jake improves upon his outstanding finish to the end of the season. Sometimes a guy with his tools take a little bit longer to mature and understand the game. Personally, it looks like the game has slowed down for him a bit and he understands when to use his physicality and how to use his speed and size a bit more. Not saying he's going to be like Kane, but what he showed at the end of the year was promising compared to the beginning of the start of the season. Also, Tryamkin stated recently he's not opposed to returning. I think AV really turned him off since he thought he deserved more ice time. With a better understanding of a pro game, I can see Greene utilizing him in a more efficient manner compared to AV. Greene tends to have a longer leash from what I can tell. However, you are right. As much as the league is transitioning to be more of a 'skill' league, you need team toughness in the playoffs which the Canucks lack at this moment in time.
@DeAngelo77
@DeAngelo77 6 лет назад
I'm not a big supporter of "we need hitters" or "we need grit." However, if need be, physical players are much easier to acquire than skilled players. 1000 times easier. Draft for skill. Look for physicality in free agency.

Just saying Jonathan Dahlen is a LW. There's no way Canucks are putting him on right wing because they lack the depth on the left. Also it would make more sense of have a first line of Dahlen - Pettersson - Boeser. The second line can actually be a pretty gritty scoring line if Virtanen can make a jump like he was showing later in the year. Horvat and Virtanen can stand up for themselves for sure and Virtanen can sort of be a Tom Wilson sort of player with Baertschi less physical but can still hold his own. The first line might not have grit, but they can beat the other team with skill and they're only all going to get stronger physically as they grow.

And who do you think will be left to you guys at seven? As much as Hawks could use a Bouchard or Hughes. If tkachuk falls to 8? He'd be a monster in the madhouse!!!

tkachuk will be top 5 pick, hughes goes for detroit. Dobson or Bouchard to van
@redddawggg
@redddawggg 6 лет назад
FC ZIP yeah, if Ottawa lose karlson. I think there's a chance they pick blue liner. Arizona be hard to think they would pass on a guy named tkachuk. And folks seem to think wings and nucks take defense men no matter what. There's four great blue chip dmen. And two forwards. So in order for Hawks to not get leftovers? Either all pick dmen (in spots 4-7) or two pick forwards. Wishing a lot yeah. But that's all it is.

1, Dahlin 2. Svetch 3. Zad 4. Tkachuk 5. Boq/Wahls/Farabee/Kotkaniemi (i think that Ari will go for F but you never know..) 6.Hughes (cos michigan) 7.Boq/Dobson/Bouchard (same as Ari but D) 8 Boq/Dob/Bou or Kotkaniemi, i think you guys will draft D-man but in here Finland there is big fuss about Kotkaniemi to Chigaco, im not sure if they r just some rumors or what but what ive heard i think its legit

Not just hitters, the players need speed and grit. The kings tried hitting the golden knights all series but got spanked. Kings were big but to slow, couldn’t keep up with the knights. Ps love ur man cave!

Virtanen would have been an ideal top 6 forward, but alas, it does not look like that is going to be. Of course if we get Tkachuk in this draft, a lot of our problems can get solved.

Did you not watch the Canucks last 20 games? Virtanen was arguably the second best or best Canuck on the ice. He's made so much progress this year. In the last Canucks home game in the 3rd period, he was definitely the best player on the ice for either side.
@courteousc2060
@courteousc2060 6 лет назад
I did watch, but that isn't enough. The last stretch Virtanen started games off okay but then ramped it up at the 3rd period. I'm keeping the kid on low expectation and honestly, if he hits above 30 points this season then I'd be thrilled. I'm not slotting the kid in at top 6, 20 points doesn't cut it, but that's not to say he can't be that.
@Rindiculousfun
@Rindiculousfun 6 лет назад
That's true, but Virtanen's defensive and physical game is a key influence on say a second line. For example there is a Tom Wilson on the Caps top line who has some skill but it mostly known for good grit and a defensive game to that top line. Virtanen could slot perfectly into that role.
@courteousc2060
@courteousc2060 6 лет назад
I agree, but there's definitely a whole lot of other plays who fit that more tactical, defensive role like Granny and Sutter. Virtanen can be our energy guy who can play anywhere in the line up, and that's not bad. If he's going to be that elusive dynamic power forward, he's going to need to show more consistency. If we see the Virtanen in pre-season and in the last 5 games of the season on a regular basis, then the kid's the guy we drafted him to be.

I think it's likely pettersson will get his NHL start on the rw, and I have a feeling baertschi's career might be over as a canuck he's an rfa and I think there is better options out there. I could be wrong.

Next season, hopefully the Canucks will look like this: Goldobin-Horvat-Boeser Dahlen-Pettersson-Virtanen Erickson-Gaudette-Gagner Leipsic-Sutter-Granlund Motte and Dowd can be extras. Baertschi should be traded. Edler-Stecher Juolevi-Gudbranson Hutton-Bouchard (we will draft him this year) Extra: Biega Markstrom Demko/Nillson

You canuckers...need to respect that development takes time. How many of you made facepalms when the Sedins came over and didn´t deliver? yeah...yeah i get it...Virtanen is used to small ice...and the Sedins was used to big ice...still. Don´t throw Virtanen away. Guy is HUGE...229 pounds (is that right?). Unlike THG...i don´t think he is of much use in a 3:rd line. Put him in 2:nd...i´ll bet ya he will grow in to that position. I´m a "Swedish Ranger"...but watched alot of Canucks games.
