Elizabeth of York - The White Princess 

I'm a fan since I'm a descendant of hers. Through her daughter Mary, queen consort of France (briefly) before marrying Brandon, and I come through their line. It's weird to know that decisions made in history are ones I should be grateful for because otherwise I wouldn't exist.

I don't know if you know but there are 3 different shows including this one. The order of the shows are The white Queen, The White Princess and The Spanish Princess.

True, but according to almost every historian of the time Elizabeth Woodville and Edward were a love match, and not considered 'approved' which is how Richard deposed her son's as rightful heirs. Elizabeth York and Henry may have started as a political alliance, but the historians of the time openly talked about how chaste and noble Elizabeth was before meeting Henry. And apparently they had a very good marriage, because Henry had no mistresses or brief lovers after their marriage. When Elizabeth died in child birth in her 30's, Henry would never marry again and still took no mistresses. It was written at the time that after his beloved wife's death he became a hard and bitter man. pretty much nothing like is written. in this series.

But at the end of the day putt aside all the rumors and writings and look at only the things actually done and written by Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Henry had pledged himself to marry Elizabeth when she was at court. For Elizabeth starting an affair with Richard would have destroyed her chances with Henry for a dalliance with her uncle. Elizabeth herself, after marriage to Henry wrote and spoke often of Henry being her one true love. In fact she died in childbirth well into her 30’s. Her and Henry even shared a bed during her many pregnancies which was unheard of at that time. Henry himself wrote and spoke often of Elizabeth. He never cheated on her and after her death he went into a great depression and became a bitter man that would not remarry even though it would have been advantageous for him as a king to do so. For the reason of the rumors of Richard and Elizabeth: One of the main reason’s people believe there was romance was because, writers of that time were no different than writers of our time. Sell a story, make some money. There was one writer that sold the story he had a letter of Elizabeth’s undying love, of course he said he lost the letter when asked to produce it. There was another writer that said he had heard from his own ears that Elizabeth despised Richard. How this common courtier would have been privy to such a conversation is any person’s guess. Richard himself was very irritated when after his wife’s death, several of his people wanted him to denounce any attempt to marry Elizabeth. Richard decried it as a Lancastrian rumor. Recently there have been verifiable papers that have been brought forth having Richard trying to arrange a marriage for Elizabeth to marry a very rich Portugal duke. Marrying her off to Portugal duke doesn’t seem very loverlike and certainly proves the rumors of his wanting to marry her himself, were nothing but rumors. But the two most obvious reasons that there was little chance of romance between the two, was Richard and Elizabeth themselves. For Elizabeth, she was born a princess the daughter of Edward the IV the king of England and Elizabeth Woodville, renown beauty. After her father’s death, while she was still grieving Richard had her parents marriage declared “untrue” and Richard had Elizabeth and her siblings declared illegitimate, and her mother of “non-virtue” (a slut in today’s slang). He locked two of Elizabeths brothers into the Tower of London where they were never seen again and rumored to have actually been strangled by Richards own hands. Richard had one of Elizabeth’s brothers executed along with her Uncle. I know things are different with royalty, but it would have been a hard stretch for a 14 year old girl to have forgiven all of this and started a 4year affair with the married man that destroyed her family. For Richard, if he had tried to marry or even just had an affair with Elizabeth, many wealthy factions would have surely been against the union of the Uncle and Niece and jumped ship to the Lancastrians. An affair between Elizabeth would not have been advantageous the way some current writers portray. Elizabeth was one of the most valuable piece’s of property he owned if she remained a York Virgin. He was well known for dangling Elizabeth and her sisters as potential marriage partners to men that were loyal to him. In simple terms Richard III was shrewd and Elizabeth was worth more to him as a pawn than a mistress.

Not really. Elizabeth of York was nothing like this. Though she was greatly loved by all and seen as a lady. Henry VII, he parents, uncles, aunts, siblings and children all adored her. She was kind, intelligent, gentle and affectionate. This is not an accurate portrayal as her. They needed to add drama so people would watch it. She and Henry VII were also a love match from the start. Nothing how the show portrays.

Me too! I couldn’t stand how everything was her mothers(Elizabeth Woodville’s) fault esp in the beginning she kept saying how she hated him but never did against him but then she and Cecily said their mother abandoned by getting locked up.. For real? 🤦🏻‍♀️

This program is very different from the book and from reality. Read the book before you judge the characters. Elizabeth was a different person than the one they portrayed her to be here. They did that for drama, to hook people into the story. In reality, Elizabeth of York was a quiet queen, she refused to take sides in any of her family drama. She just did her bit as queen, as a woman was supposed to do back then.

It was a time where all people with power in England where white and I would even go as far as saying that most people had never seen anyone with a darker skin colour before. You can hardly expect an authentic, almost solely placed in England series to have as diverse a cast as has become the modern standard... You know, I hadn't even noticed it actually because the casting of each character kind of made sense

Prince Arthur was the oldest and he died at 15yrs old not long after he married Catherine of Aragon so what other son are you talking about died at 15. Elizabeth of York had four sons two only lived to be one then Prince Arthur and King Henry viii who lived to be a middle age man.

Teresa Perrotta It was definitely unpleasant to watch. But she did offer her brother and his wife a chance to escape and live a life of simplicity. And they wanted a title. She was put in a hard situation because her sons are Tudor and if they continued this tug of war her sons could die. Earlier in the season she was raped, if you remember.

Teresa Perrotta it’s a very gray situation because if she didn’t behead them there would always be people wanting them on the throne instead of her sons. She knew that her sons would likely be killed if the York’s won because they were the Tudor heirs. It was her children and husband against her brother and cousin and she had to make a choice, so she choose her sons and husband. Any mother would do the same if put in that horrible situation. She seemed conflicted with her choice but I think she made the right one.

In real life she wasn't there and probably didn't have much of say but the guy irl wasn't her brother. Sadly it wasn't recorded how she felt about her cousin being executed as far as I can find anyway

He was not her brother as Richard would never have let him escape the tower, and then why did one allegedly escape and one was murdered when they were together the entire time. Her cousin she had little say over as Henry VII felt he was a threat as the only living male York in line for the throne and Lizzie had zero say. The one who claimed to be her brother was the son of a Flemish boat builder and since he looked like Richard York, son of the late King Edward IV, and roughly the same age, he played the part. Remember, Lizzie's aunt, was the Duchess of Burgundy so she coached the man personally as she wanted the Yorks back on the throne.

It sounds like he wasn't raised by them. In the show they spend very little time with him and focus on rearing Arthur for the throne. Second sons often got ignored if the first was healthy. He needed more discipline. But also, if Catherine had a healthy son he wouldn't have done half the crazy things he did.

@@chanaberlove8720 his mother was closely involved in his early upbringing, and there is evidence to suggest that she taught him to read. Other than that, royal children conventionally lived in a dedicated household, in this case Eltham Palace, and were not much in their parents' company.

Can't remember the context for this scene but Henry was the son of a Welsh nobleman who was the son of the second marriage to a dowager queen. He was born and raised (for the early years of his life) in wales. It could also be a celebration of the new Prince of Wales (Arthur) Henry VIII's older brother. Not sure which!

@@sharminmiah9643 they didn't hate each other, Lizzie was most likely too good nature to plot against her husband. Elizabeth Woodville never ruined her position by plotting against Tudors after her daughter married one. Perkin Warbeck, in the end, and until now is considered a pretender but never a true Royal. Besides there's no proof prince Richard was hidden by his mother, both Princes in the Tower disappeared.
