This video is dedicated to all the students who attended Elizabeth West High School, their families, their teachers and the residents of Elizabeth West/Davoren Park at large.
Elizabeth West was a suburb at the northern extent of the Adelaide metropolitan area, South Australia in the City of Playford. The suburb was merged with Elizabeth Field on 11 November 1993 and renamed Davoren Park after the Davoren family, who were early pioneers of the area.
Elizabeth West High School opened on the 6th of February 1967 with 560 students. In 1988 a major restructuring of education in the northern suburbs took place, resulting in the closure of EWHS to become South Australia's first adult re-entry school. On March 5th 1998 a time capsule was buried to mark the school's 21st birthday. In 2022 demolition of the school began to make way for a new housing estate. The time capsule was never recovered.
Thank you to Lachlan Potts for providing the internal footage found in this video.

Some memories there I will hold forever.. went to school there with my deceased cousin and mate.. still think of them often, wandering those halls, out by the gazebos.. some good friends I won and lost there… even met my wife there. Guess it was a way more important place to me than I thought

I went there as a mature age student for six months doing some short refresher courses prior to sitting the SATAC test for admission to Adelaide Uni in 1994. As I recall there weren't any high school students, just people doing post high school type training. I guess that was the start of the slide into obscurity for the place. Back in the sixties and seventies there were some 'tough' people in that area!

what a shame.. 1986 i left playford high and started at eliz west for tech studies.. playford didnt have a fitting and machining class where as the west did... i only had to attend the tech studies class as i had officially left high school.. even though i was like an outsider to the rest of the students . they were all good people. kind of got there respect as i had chosen there school over the one i had spent 4 years studying at .. there was always a school rivalry, and i kind of broke that ..

Very cool Andy. Must have felt a bit trippy returning to the same site under a different name and re-purposed. I understand some teachers from EWHS stayed on after it became a re-entry school only. That must have felt quite surreal for them too.

So many memories for me here and thanks so much for the video! Attended EWHS in Yrs 11&12 as a student (not a very good one though....) 1970&1971. Came back again as a teacher in 1993 (took over PE and Outdoor Ed from Phil Donaldson) and spent 25 years at, in order, Elizabeth West Adult Campus (first name change after EWHS), then Para West Adult Campus and finally Northern Adelaide Senior College when it moved from Crafter St to the Elizabeth TAFE precinct in 2015. Retired at the end of 2017, so sad to see it finally about to go for good, it has been a long association and an integral part of my life.

Yeah, that had a reputation to be sure. I went to Smithfield Plains High School after attending Elizabeth Field Primary in years 6 and 7. I had the choice between the 2 but went with SPHS because I had gone to SPPS up until early year 6. SPHS had a similar rep, but we were all just kids acting tough because we thought we had to.

Have you searched RU-vid for some footage at all Ben? I'm often amazed at what I find. Good chance someone shot some footage and uploaded. How a video is titled can determine how easy it is to find though, so sometimes you have to play around a lot with words in the title search before finding what you're looking for. Thank you for watching mate - there's a follow up to this video with actual demolition footage of the school on the way 🙏

Did you find some footage of EHS. I went there from 1973 to 1975. For many High School this was just a stepping stone to their hopes and dreams for others it was a place to escape from taking some paths that didn’t end well.

I went to Parafield Gardens High and the first teacher was the Technical Drawing teacher there. I'm going to spell his name wrong but it was Antonouchi (or some thing like that) and he still looked like the first photo but a little older. I can not remember his first name. It's a sad state when a government can't keep hospitals and schools running because of the ill handling of their departments or resources. Time has to move on but it shouldn't lose its hospitals or schools.

Yeah mate. I'm all for evolution but bulldozing pretty much everything in sight is such a shame, and in my opinion a huge mistake. We need leaders who know how to move forward while respecting and preserving history. Leaders who see beyond there own term and self interests. We're a little bereft of that at the moment

Good morning! Yes, such a shame about the time capsule. Exact same thing happened with the capsule buried at the old Smithfield Plains High School site. Sad those were intended for future students to open - crazy how much has come and gone in such a short time. I shot the outside footage in this vid - it was a Monday morning and at the bus stop right across the street on Edgecombe Road were high school students waiting for a bus to take them to school. The irony was not lost on me.

It's sad when you see your old school demolished. Was there from '69 to '73. Still holds fond memories of a life that could have been if only I paid more attention and studied that much harder. Instead I ended up in insurance for 38 years, before working for the Government for another 6. Now happily retired. The teachers were (mostly) great. Pity I quickly lost touch with my fellow pupils - I'm sure you're still out there.

Hey Ken. Thank you for sharing with us. I think many of us feel similarly to you mate. Of course, change one thing and everything else is affected - had we done things differently there are many experiences we would never have had, people we would never have met and maybe children we would never have had. Take heart mate, we all do the best we can with what we start out with. Cheers for watching and enjoy your retirement my friend. Warm regards, Will 🙏🍷

OMG - the great, the ugly and the in between grew at EWHS. There was so many things that occurred here, with n without the teachers knowledge to make us what we have all become today. Remember where you come from, always but never live in the past. Jenny Cohen, nee Charles.

I started there in "first year". I think it was the year it opened. (I'm 70 yo in a few weeks). I loved it there. But I was only there for 1 year as we moved to another suburb. At that time, the teachers were great... nice people (all except the geography teacher) and treated us like people ... as opposed to scum who they were being forced to teach. First time in my life that I actually enjoyed school... and did pretty well. I do recall the headmaster.. Hannaford. We all called him batman as he always wore his formal black robes. These days, it'd more likely be Snape 😅. It's a real pity about all the crap that went down... and sounds like I was better off not being there too long.

Attended during the 80's. Plenty of bullies drunks and want to be politicians on the teaching staff. The amount of lads I went to school with that died at their own hands or through alcohol and drugs can be partially contributed by their experiences at school. I still endure a reputation by some as a bully. It was a learnt behaviour from the staff and a survival tool. I'm sorry about some of things I did there. Good riddance to the place.
