Emergency Medicine Rotation VLOG // My hardest day of med school so far...

Emergency Medicine has been one of my favorite rotations in med school so far! As a med student, I loved the high acuity and diversity of patient presentations that you get to see and the variety of procedures that you get to be involved with... but there were some difficult days too. I'd highly recommend everyone out there to at least sound some time in the emergency department if you were considering it as specialty choice at all!

Nice to meet you 🤙 I'm a second year medical student at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. I'm just trying to document my experiences throughout my medical training and beyond to hopefully help inspire/guide some other students... and make things more fun for myself :) I post a new video once per week.

With your videos I forget your in medical school and not a resident. You seem like u should all ready be in residency program. Dang soon it will be difficult to get those muscles in a scrub top! Love 💘your vlogs ! Take care!

It definitely feels that way for most of us too! It is nice having someone more senior than you around in the hospital though 😅 even for the easier stuff, it takes a lot of pressure off of us to know that the treatment plans we come up with are going to be checked first. Aha... then we size up on scrub tops 😎 Take care as well Sherry!

could you please make a video on steps to become a cardiac surgeon in Canada? I wanna become one but there are a lot of misconceptions about it. Thank you !
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 3 года назад
Hi Ashkan :D I'm not to sure of the misconceptions but I'd be happy to try and clear those up. The first step is going to medical school - then there are 3 different routes that will allow you to practice thoracic surgery, but most commonly I've met doctors who trained as general surgeons first and then went on to receive additional training and certification. You can find everything you'd want to know about the specialty here www.cma.ca/sites/default/files/2020-10/cardiothoracic-surgery-e.pdf

Sir I saw a post on reddit that a private plastic surgeon in australia gross about 1.4 million dollars but after overhead and taxes he takes home 380000 australian dollars. Is this same for surgeons in canada? Please reply. Nice video.
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 3 года назад
Hey Piku, I had a video on this topic on my channel if you're interested - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o9ClGZoqt9M.html In short, the answer is that you end up taking home a lot less than you bill for. Usually around 1/3 of what you bill for is actually your net income after taxes and overhead in Canada from what I've heard

How many hours of sleep do you usually get?
@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 3 года назад
Depends on the rotation because some are busier than others. Emergency med was great for sleep and I'd get 6-7 hours most nights except for maybe 1 or 2 times during the month. By comparison, surgery and internal medicine were much worse in that regard and the average was between 4-6 hours most nights 😴

from the perspective of someone that trained in big bad NYC hospitals (some public) prior to the resident work hours limitations, having the time to tape and edit all these videos is interesting. normal on call shift was 32 hours or more. we didn't think about content creation, we thought about competent care and survival.

I think your comment is interesting too :) not to say that I know what it’s like to walk a mile in your shoes, but I’m interested whether a paper has been published suggesting that hobbies in medical school aren’t possible… seems like the opposite has actually been espoused more and more lately by our institutions. Guess we all function best under our own conditions 💪🔥 all the best doc
