Keith Emerson was considered the G.O.A.T Of keyboards by many polls in the mid 70's. Keyboard magazine started doing a yearly poll in '75 and had him at #1 year every until he died in 2016. I had a different version of Fanfare For the Common Man that i sent you. I know you will like it..... Emerson Lake and Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man (Finale Live Royal Albert Hall 1992)

Part of an interview with Greg Lake: LAKE: I remember we were rehearsing in a basement beneath the Olympic stadium. It was the only place large enough to fit the whole orchestra in to rehearse. A phone call came in and I had to go up and take it, and everyone took a coffee break. So during that break I took the elevator up to the ground floor, which actually took me to the Olympic stadium. And I went up to the stadium and I was looking at this absolutely mind-blowing site, covered in virgin snow, with the Olympic rings lit up in neon lights at both ends. It was an eerie sight, begging for something to happen, and I thought, ‘Video.’ We got the crew to move the gear up to the stadium the next day to start recording. Of course, what we didn’t plan was for it to be way below zero. My fingers would literally slip through the strings. So we had to record it in fairly short bursts, but it was a lovely film in the end. Imagine playing outdoors by -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit), with 18 inches of snow on the ground and all that, in front of empty seats.

"Fanfare For The Common Man" is one of my favorite songs by EL&P. Love this live version at Olympic Stadium, Montreal in 1977. It shows them rehearsing in an empty stadium in the cold winter. Loved their use of the Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer & piano. They are considered a progressive rock band. They had a unique sound that included classical music with jazz & symphonic rock elements. Their sound is like no other band. Sadly both Keith Emerson & Greg Lake died in 2016, leaving only Carl Palmer.

Had the good fortune to see ELP live, indoors in a Symphony Hall. They blew out the power three times during the show, and patiently waited while the power was restored, and picked up right where they were cut off in the song. Real professionals. Also got to see the Montreal Expos and the San Francisco Giants play a Double Header at the Montreal Olympic Stadium, in 1980. I think the right word is CAVERNOUS.

Cool Lulu. Thanks much. ELP is just superb. C'est La Vie, Take a Pebble, Still you Turn Me On are other songs that show the virtuosity of the band.

The video is attached to the studio take of "Fanfare" . On their '77 Tour , ELP was ambitious & wanted to tour with a full on orchestra . When the band realized cost of hauling an 80 piece orchestra around on a tour that idea got whittled down and the orchestra was only used on limited stops for the tour . They would actually perform in Olympic Stadium in Montreal with the full orchestra . A Cool track from their Live album recorded there is "The Theme for Peter Gunn" which was an old TV series with cool intro music . Once again this is where my living in the NYC area was a plus . I was at 1 of the shows ELP did with the full orchestra at Madison Square Garden . "Peter Gunn" is a short 4 minute song . I'd recommend checking it out 🙂

I can recall "The Theme for Peter Gunn" when watching The Blues Brothers on streaming (far too young for the theatrical release) and it was pretty cool music; the sort of music that let your imagination decide and perhaps paired nicely with the scene in the movie. So perhaps it would be interesting to listen to a live (cover version ?) of that done by ELP and compare because this song 'Fanfare For The Common Man' just doesn't resonate with me. Not sure if it's the specific key or pacing or the instruments. It's obviously better than I'm perceiving it and that happens. Not every piece of music or every song is for everyone. But yeah, will definitely check out the Theme For Peter Gunn if it's on YT to see what they did with that.

I saw that tour here in Nashville in1977 when it came through and they had the orchestra but they knew that there was one of their last shows we talked to some of the orchestra after the show and they were bummed but they understood that it was for financial reasons.

My guess is that they were doing their sound check. Bands have to check the acoustics, well if it matters. Local bar doesn't usually offer sound checks. I could kick myself for not going to a Jeff Beck sound check one time... that tune ELP played is based upon a classical music composition well. Worth tracking down here on RU-vid. You're fun, Lulu, and did very well! ("Fan-fair")

Oh Lulu, this is an xln't one. RIP Kieth Emerson and, Greg Lake. ELP is a fantadtic band. There's only three members of the band and they sound like an entire orchestra. Too bad you weren't around to see them live. PS they played at the Montreal Olympic Stadium in 1977 during their North American tour. The band played to an empty stadium in the winter, and the 2016 documentary Fanfare for the Common Man was filmed there during their performance Fanfare for the Common Man is a musical work by the American composer Aaron Copland. It was written in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under conductor Eugene Goossens and was inspired in part by a speech made earlier that year by then American Vice President Henry A. Wallace, in which Wallace proclaimed the dawning of the "Century of the Common Man". Several alternative versions have been made and fragments of the work have appeared in many subsequent US and British cultural productions, such as in the musical scores of movies.

the story of this video, is, that due to how cold it was, it could only be filmed in 30 second segments, hence why it's a bit all over the place kinda video. Also check out the clocks. Still it was a brilliant vid for a brilliant song.

I think they were there just to make the video. I doubt that you get people to show up with a venue that is that cold. Then again, it is Canada!

One of the alltime greatest songs in my "RELAXING" Playlist on my MP3-Smartphone. Its one of thoose songs that gets me started feeling good again (from miserable feeling to bouncing around on my exerciseball and feeling happy). Stuff like this (and seeing other people like Lulu enjoying this music too) is what really helps me getting through the day. Thank You! BTW Lulu, you almost sounded like a Radio DJane at the end. 😄
