Beastly airplane. I don't care what people say, I find both A380 series and B747 series amazing and mastery of aircraft engineering. Nice video, love the approach, even thought a little rough.

(follow on from previous comment) The nose down moment is a result of when correctly loaded (i.e. centre of gravity within limits) the centre of pressure (where lift acts) should be behind the centre of gravity (where weight acts, also the 'pivot point' of the a/c). As you increase angle of attack, Cl (coefficient of lift) increases and lift increases the lift being behind a pivot point causes the nose to pitch downwards.

Basically, if the pilot flew pointing straight down the runway, the aircraft would be blown by the wind across the runway and potentially off the side. So he flies with the nose pointing into wind, at an angle to the direction of the runway. Obviously if he keeps this positioning after touchdown, he'll end up off the side of the runway, so he needs to straighten up. This can be done straight after touchdown (as he appears to have done here) or just before touchdown.
@packo3fp
@packo3fp 11 лет назад
1) Ailerons are a roll control, Elevators control the pitch on an Airbus. 2) Alpha-max refers to max angle of attack, not stall speed (VS1 or VS0) 3) The alpha-protocol on an airbus only limits the output for a given input, it will not pitch the nose down to counteract the stall, the exact reason the Air France A330 stalled and crashed. (see next comment)

Boing 747 and A380 is like comparing a F-4 Phantom to a F-22. Both very good planes for their era, but from different eras.

Perfectly normal, the pilot is simply kicking off the drift angle applied to keep on the centreline for approach. If he flew it in a straight line with a crosswind he would end up landing to one side of the runway, so he points the nose into wind then as he flares he uses rudder and opposite aileron to straighten up.

@ryan1111111555555555 11 лет назад
Yes its basically like having some useful functions from the AP always turned on, and for example if you bank the plane, and take your hand off the flight stick, the plane will continue to bank automatically untill you drag the flightstick the opposite way, where as a Boeing will want to straighten up naturally, To be honest pilots dont care whether they're in an Airbus or Boeing, it depends what routes they get and how this affects them, rather than the actual plane itself

@NorthWestAviation I thought I recogmised those rudder corrections on landing. I was arriving from Dubai, I was sat near front right in row 47, window seat. I was my first trip on the 380, I flew out on the Sunday before. Managed to get into the cockpit in Dubai during pre-flight checks and chat to the captain. Got few good photos too.

When the tires do grab and straighten the plane out he counters with opposite rudder input, which in turn throws him in the opposite direction because the plane was already straight due to the tires. He then over controls again the opposite direction to counter the first input of rudder. If he and the co-pilot were ahead of the plane they should have known the tires had straightened out the plane and kept natural rudder.

Interestingly if you over pitch/bank in the airbus then release the side stick it will return to max pitch/bank angles, but not with the stick held. Also if you release the side stick at any other attitude it will maintain that attitude without trim, which must take some getting used to when probably every aircraft you fly up to that point will require trimming.
@winterocks
@winterocks 12 лет назад
I don’t mean to bust on this pilot at all, but when you’re coming in with a light crosswind you straighten it out with the tail at the last second before touchdown. That way the landing gear and tires don’t take the side load like it did in this landing.

It's a beautiful thing, this BEHEMOTH of the skies! It's even MORE beautiful to watch them land and take off, up close and personal from SFO! These suckers are on the glide path right over my house when they land in San Francisco from the far east, or from over the Pole. They are slow moving beasts in the sky, after traveling HEAVY for 18+ hours, as they put down the flaps, take on the drag and smoothly land themselves on a dime, only to repeat the same thing later on in the day with a new crew!

how can anyone call this airplane ugly? to me, it's a gorgeous piece of engineering genius that represents years and years of hard work and a huge leap in the world of aviation...one could reasonably argue that the 787 is a more practical contemporary endeavor but that's ok...they are 2 vastly different enterprises

The WRIGHT Brothers were the first to fly a heavier-than-air craft (in other words, an airplane), three years before Santos Dumont. We're not talking about lighter-than-air craft, like hot air balloons and dirigibles, although Dumont wasn't anywhere close to the first with those, either.

Bear in mind aswell that Airbus themselves have admitted that their pilots have lost 'stick and rudder skills' hence the a350 type-rating programme when its launched is going to be redesigned to take pilots back to basics of flying the aircraft.

Looks like a light wind day, maybe 10kts. gusting to 15kts. This pilot doesn’t have it straightened out when he touches down, then over controls badly coming down the runway. When he applies the reversers either he doesn’t have them synced or is adding too much power to one side and she gets squirrely again.

Not really, because the F4 Phantom isn't used any more (except maybe some third world countries) The 747's still have an updated and modern fleet. That, and the fact that they still look way more cool than the A380, lol..

As does boeing, with the AP engaged, airbus just does it whilst hand flying as well. Personally I'd prefer to fly boeing aircraft (though I'll take whatever I can get a job on when the time comes), I've grown up around them, my father being a 757 and ex-767 pilot. I'm not amazingly technically minded either, its taken me a lot of effort to grasp the stuff in the ATPL course, I dread to think how much more is actually involved in an airbus type rating!

I suppose it makes hand flying much easier. I think company is the most important thing these days, so many companies trying to make pilots work too long for too little and pressuring them into taking risks. A nice legacy airline, BA/Emirates/Cathay etc. would do me nicely on a nice new-ish jet, 777 or something. Though I may have to put up with a lot of s**t first in order to get there.

I never denied that airbus has more complex systems than boeing, my original point was: a) a joke b) that the advanced systems constantly monitoring and adjusting the outputs in relation to pilot inputs take a little of the feel of flying away. Why would the airbus pitch down if gaining altitude?? If you are climbing you have excess power over that required for 1g flight and therefore are not in danger of a stall yet.
