In 90's, I just didn't realize what I was witnessing and enjoying... Now, I understand and thank Emmitt for all of his heroic moves and runs... Thank you, Emmitt. You are the best!!!
God I miss watching him play. I remember watching the Seahawks game when he broke the record. Amazing athlete, and one of the main reasons I became a Cowboys fan.
Met Him in person when I use to work for a Home Theater Company back in 95. I was only a helper then and didn't know I was in Emmitt Smith House. Very Humble person!
Emmitt Smith: The All Time leading rusher, most TD as a RB 164 TD, 8 Time Pro Bowl, 4 Time First team All Pro, 78 100 yard season, A first ballot Hall of Famer AND A 3 TIME SB Champion! Nuff said, Emmitt is the greatest RB ever!
Emmitt truly was the greatest running back ever. he was so elusive and he could make a cut on a dime. he was also underrated both as a receiver and a blocker. thanks for all of the great years Emmitt your HOF induction is well deserved and a great conclusion to a truly fantastic career. Cowboy Nation salutes you Emmitt thanks for the memories! HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS!!!!!
The thing I find interesting about the Great Wall of Dallas is that Nate Newton Mark Stepnoski John Gesek Kevin Gogan Erik Williams No one from the Great Wall of Dallas was drafted ahead of the third round, and not one of them is in the hall of fame.
I have been a Cowboys fan since I was 3 and I am 25 years old now. I will always be a cowboys fan! Long live the Cowboys. Emmitt Smith was, is and always will be the greatest running back to play the game of football.
emmitt smith is a combination of barry sanders and jim brown, hes quick and powerful, ntm emmitt won those super bowls. He carried the cowboys in the 90's. and thats coming from a colts fan who lives in bills country also.
First SB the Cowboys won in the 90's: Dallas ranked 5th in passing offense and 5th in team defense Second SB: 7th in passing offense and 2nd in team defense. Third SB: 13th in passing and 3rd in team defense. Yeah, he had no help. They win five Super Bowls in a row with Barry Sanders.
Plus, the Barry/Jim comparison is ridiculous. Emmitt didn't have Barry's move or speed, and he didn't have Brown's size and power. He did, however, have a dominant offensive line and a passing game regularly ranked in the top 5 in the NFL. Good for him; no one outside of Dallas fans consider him the best ever.
hes not as quick as barry or as powerful as jim but he combines everything plus he was a great pass catcher and blocker. Troy Aikman never threw for over 4,000 yards in a season in his career. Emmitt won those superbowls. Im not even a dallas fan
Byron Withersby You may want to get your facts straight. The Cowboys finished in the top 5 passing once in the 1990s (1992/5th), not "regularly" as you claim. However, they did finish in the top 5 in rushing offense multiple times. On top of that, Troy Aikman only threw more than 20 TDs in a season one time (23 TD/1992) and averaged less than 200 ypg passing for his career. Aikman didn't need to put up gaudy numbers. Why? The 90s Cowboys clearly relied on the running of #22 - the most complete back ever, period! This topic isn't even debatable, really (ridiculous)... Smith's the NFL's all-time leading rusher, with 3 SB rings to boot! Bring your argument when someone tops that...or even sniffs it.
Last I checked E. Smith and B. Sanders played in the same era... So please stop staying if this of if that... it is what it is... E. Smith is a three time superbowl champ, Hall of famer and all time rushing leader what more could he have done....
Good lord he was one hell of a player and a person as well. I have been a Dallas fan since i was six years old and i'm 23 now and still a fan even though they suck right now.
A complete running back that has intestinal fortitude showing consistency and greatness. Emmitt Smith plays every down being very reliable and durable playing through immense pain showing the indomitable will of a champion. Also making his players better around him while he does everything and more which separates good from great players.
1:40...i have been looking for that play, forever...!!! this is the only place on the net that i've seen it since the game...!!! Thanks and Great job man...!!!
Well said my man!!! Barry Sanders gave up on his team because he had no heart and it showed in the playoffs going 1-5 owning a dubious playoff record 13 carries for -1 yard with 4 receptions for 4 yards in 1994 losing at Green Bay 16-12. Quitters don't earn respect therefore you don't deserve to be called the greatest of ANYTHING especially when you underachieve in the post season.
Emmit Smith was the most COMPLETE runnig back ever, which to me means he was the BEST! Barry couldnt block to save his life...couldnt catch out of the backfield, and did NOT have a nose for the goal line. As a matter of fact, Barry would often be pulled once the Lions got into the red zone, because he was not a north south type runner. I apprecuate Sanders and how exciting he was, but I'll take 2\ 22 gets my vote as the best ever!
wigman games 1985 Bears did not have the best RB QB WR and one of the best defenses in the NFL all at the same time. This team was like MJ's Chicago Bulls. Don't even try man... lol.
The cowboys didn't have the best running back,or quarter back,or defense either, what is your point, and the 85 bears did have the best running back and defense at the same time, what are you really trying to say?
Basically I always went about the Barry vs. Emmitt debate like this: If you're looking for which running back turns the position into an art form and kept asses in seats and TVs on the right channel, Barry far and away. If you're looking for the running back who could reliably get the tough yards and carry his team to championships, that was Emmitt.
Emmitt Smith: 4409 carries, 18,355 yards, 21,579 total yards from scrimmage, 1993 Super Bowl MVP, four rushing titles 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, NFL MVP Award, 10 consecutive 1000 yard seasons 1991-2001, Rookie of the year in 1990. A complete all around running back who can move the chains effectively and consistently having the ability to make necessary adjustments. The heart and soul of the Dallas Cowboys showing great leadership possessing indomitable will and perseverance.
I love when the anti Emmitt folk try to argue that someone else was better. How frustrating it must be for them. I would imagine it feels similar to try to convince people that 2+2 does not = 4. the rest of us can just sit back, relax, and take great pleasure in watching these plays of the BEST running back in the history of football.
One of the most complete backs to play the game, hands down. Emmitt Smith was a great running back and he helped make his team great also but he gets no credit for that.
Emmitt Smith was the high school player of the year and broke all the Florida Gator records a consensus All American before his Hall of Fame professional career had a great head coach in Jimmy Johnson that made his star players and team better each year from the ground up remember Dallas was just 1 and 15 and coach built the Cowboys with trades draft picks and just flat out great coaching so the only thing I don't understand is why is it even a debate to some when Enmitt is being called the best or one of greatest and he also was first class off the field how come they make excuses how come they can't just respect the truth Emmitt Smith was the most complete back of all time other than probably Walter Payton easily
Like u said. Florida high school player of the year. Over 8,000 yards. In 3 years broke all Florida gators records. Jerry Jones said his production high school . college was unbelievable. Now over 18,000 yards.
people always try to take away credit from emmitt cause he had the "best o-line ever",but just have a look at the tackles he broke... he was awesome. my top 10 rb (retired) list of all time would be: sweetness, brown, smith, dickerson, oj, sanders, campbell, LT, sayers, bo jackson.
Like someone once said Emmitt Smith had to share the ball with 2 hall of famers in Troy Aikman and Micheal Irvin. Barry didn't have to share the ball with anyone. Barry quit he didn't have the heart Emmitt has had Barry set a rushing record. Emmitt would of broken it regardless how long it took thats the type of player Emmitt was noone was gonna keep him from history.
I like this tribute. Say what you want, still hes leading. And got rings, turds. Barry this adrian peterson that he was great. Im dallas for life (sure wish emmitt was here). But he had a bad ass team that helped him too at the time.
Seeing him running through tackles and making so many people miss, I just have to laugh at the people who say he would've been ordinary if he didn't have a great offensive line.
give me the Toughness of Jim Brown, the heart of Walter Payton, the elusiveness of Barry sanders, the speed if Bo Jackson, the power of Earl Campbell and the O-line of Emmitt (lulz) that would make for an unstoppable force of nature
@cchhrriis So for you to say that Barry Sanders would have the same amount of rings as Emmitt Smith is truly ridiculous. Here are the factors that you've overlooked Barry is not reliable on short yardage so he'll cost your team yards, he doesn't block which is an asset and he'll do more work by taking what the play is designed for and try to make a bigger play resulting in high risk. Emmitt moves the chains consistently because he'll take what the defence gives him, an excellent blocker cont....
he wasn't really that fast, but he's so stronger and great balance.... Barry was faster, but can't take hits like Emmitt, but you weren't going to touch Barry..... great video
@ccchhrriis Not to mention that Barry doesn't ALWAYS hit his holes quickly so he chooses to cutback against the grain. Don't forget Barry Sanders was under a run and shoot offence that stretches the defence in creating more room to run and he benefited from that offensive scheme. On the other hand Emmitt Smith is downhill runner that runs more of a north south type of direction along with hitting the holes with timing and precision while being under a rhythm timing running based offence. cont...
barry was tight but look at emmitts highlights he broke alot of tackles...without his line he eluded alot of defenders..great vision, balance, heart, and durablity..so u emmitt smith haters u can sit down..18,000 yards dont just come from a great line..thats like saying tom brady wouldnt have had all his stats and rings without his line..
@FortMinorsBiggestFan The RB is as important as any position. more so in the Cowboys system during the Johnson/Switzser Era that's why the cowboys were like 2-11 when emmitt wasn't playing. The offense was predicated around pounding the rock then going over the top with playaction. Barry played on a team with 3 pro bowl lineman, 3 great receivers in a system that spread the defense forcing them only to keep six in the box opening up lanes for Barry while Emmitt was facing 7-8 in the box.
