When I have something hard to do, I trick myself saying "You don't have to do it, for now just take one step towards it." After that come another step, another step... and before I know it it's done. Set small goals. No matter how small, they will build up and you'll get the job done.

I used to destroy my body and soul with a party lifestyle. You name it i did it outside of heroine and meth. I had no mission in life. I got a DUI and had to make some serious choices. Now I am 7 months clean and sober and I plan on making it through today. I have an attitude of gratitude and am back in college as a double major for English and Spanish. I used to be a chef and missed my window of opportunity because of my destructive lifestyle. I am 6'3" , 350 lbs...down from 420 lbs ( ironic? ) since March of this year. No booze, and the right foods, and racking up the miles in my new balance is treating me we'll. I got my motivation from my screw up with the DUI and a RU-vid video about class 237. I use t wrestle and play football in high school so I know abouT not playing around with the,working out. I have to make it through this day, this minute this hour. And everything in this video makes sense to the max.this video is new to me and I really have enjoyed it. That's what made me subscribe. I don't really know what that means, to subscribe, but I thank you for keeping the positive vibes going.

Great turnaround story! How are you doing today?
@larrymasterspowerbuildingc4477
Back I college with one one year undergrad, 1.5 years professional school. No more drinking, smoking, doping. I powerlift now and have lost over 140 lbs since I wrote the post that you commented on. I'm alive and I understand my life. That DUI put my freedom in jeopardy and I had to play by the rules to stay clean and out of jail. It was an easy decision to make, since I got this nice muffin ass. Y'know? Anyway, all bullshitting aside, I am as clean as when I was born, and I love it. Thanks for writing me, brother.
@larrymasterspowerbuildingc4477
Adrian101882 but I really have to put this in there... When I was fuckin' up all over the place, and living with one foot in the grave and one in the streets drinking and getting high, I used to hate myself moments after my dope was gone. And I would hate myself more in the morning because sometimes I would go broke or owe friends money for drgs or sometimes my dope dealers and that is so e scary shit, because if they see you as a problem, they'll kill ya. So for about three years I used to lament to God that I couldn't quit and asked him to step into my life at the right time. I really thought God didn't care about me because He watched me screw up so many times and didn't do anything. So I asked Him to keep me out of jail, but turn my life around when I needed it the most because I couldn't quit. I left it up to God. And it was Thanks giving evening when I got loaded and slept it off just enough to drive home the next morning with a .013 blood alcohol level. I got pulled over for swerving and the rest is history. I got a lawyer, started AA to let the judge know that I was serious about taking my medicine, and knew that my prayer had been answered. So many time,s I had driven so fucikng drink and high that if I had been can't , I would have done so e serious time in jail, because a lot of those times I also was holding onto some dope. So, all the glory to God, baby. He even blessed me with a great girlfriend. We're going to a comedy show this weekend in Detroit!

I love this kind of advice. It is not what most people come here for. Most people are looking for help with non-linear issues. How to be happy, how to make money, how to have friends, be smarter etc. Being mentally tough is easy when you know when the difficulty ends! Even the guy in the video admits that - albeit unknowingly - he said " I just need to get through this evolution because then I will get a break, some water, maybe a meal etc". THAT'S EASY! What is not easy is how to stay mentally tough when you don't know when the shit will end? How to stay mentally tough when you do not know when is the break...or if there is one at all? This, ladies and gentlemen is real life! In sports and the military where things are linear - run from here to there, do this for that long is a lot easier to be mentally strong because of the predictability. In real life however, there is no predictability if you are running a business, looking for happiness or relationships. This is what kills people emotionally and sometimes even physically.

It's funny that you mentioned breakfast, during any of my stress induced training when I was in the Navy I always thought about what I was going to eat afterwards and it helped me through it whether it was basic, MA A-School, ECS, ESCS, and even when I got out and did my first GoRuck challenge. I would tell people that I think of food and they just looked at me crazy but it's true, good food is a reward especially when you were brought up not always having it.

That short term goal idea about having a goal even for the next 10 mins or an hour instead of thinking the full week, that already took a high amount of stress from me instantly. Yes i will plan out the week but i will only think about/work on what i need to do in the next 1 hr or so.Fantastic idea and video. Helps so much with overwhelm.

I was a Recon Marine and have forgotten the simplicity and directness of our training. This is some of the best and well stated information Ive ever heard about stress. I dont think they taught us this in SERE school. Amazing and thank you for this information, i will teach my daughter these things. Keep it simple stupid, two is one and one is none, proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance, and slow is fast. There are many others like SMEAC and what not, but saying I used daily and still do. Thank you. Another really good video is the 3 ways to combat extreme stress and anxiety by another Navy Seal. You guys are awesome, I wish I would have been a Seal. I did BRC at Coranado in 97, such a great experience.

It's great to acknowledge the fact that our mind and body are linked. We can survive some pretty tough situations with the right mindset. But the reality is everyone has their own point when their cup gets full. I think the SEALs are great and I respect, honor and support them. From what I understand, the average tenure of a SEAL isn't that long. Folks, unless you are a psychopath, if you continue to abuse your body and mind long enough, something is going to break. No one is bulletproof physically or emotionally.

I'm a girl, not particularly strong, but I worked out and joined the German military for a couple of months (that's possible in Germany; you can stay from 7 up to 23 months in that "programme"), and my greatest fear was giving up during basic training. I didn't. Obviously, I needed a lot of help from other recruits because of my lack of strength, but at least I managed to carry my own stuff all the time, which is something not even all the male recruits can say about themselves. In the beginning, I was so happy to finally do something again after having done not much at all, or at least nothing fulfilling, in the seven months between my graduation from school and the beginning of my basic training. Later on, my motivation wore off, especially because something in my personal life happened that made me less resilient to the stress in basic training. What was so challenging for me was the not knowing what's next, what the instructors had in mind, and stuff like that. Yes, I was afraid of the pain, and I still am. When we went to camp outside for 3 days, I suffered a lot in that time. I'm a relatively private person, and not being able to relax mentally for three days straight made me quite depressed. One week later, we spent one and a half days outside; it was the "final test" basically. I had two slight mental breakdowns in that time due to two situations, in which I panicked, and cried once because I had a piercing pain in my chest, so I was really scared, plus all my mental strength was used up. (That was so embarrassing. I think the instructors still have a photo of me crying.) I simply wanted the day to be over. I'm not a religious person, but this day I prayed. Luckily, the day went by finally, we got promoted to the next rank, and I even got a recommendation for a higher career, which only a few did. I met my boyfriend in basic training. For him, basic training was like holidays because the job he did before was physically much more challenging.... It makes me frustrated when I says how easy basic training was for him because it was one of the greatest experiences in my lifetime, and it's one thing that gives me self-confidence. If you've made it that far: The reason why I wrote all this is that I want to be more resilient. I don't want to always be scared of inevitable and tough things. I also want to partiallly go back to the army as a reserve officer, but I want to be stronger then. More assertive. Tougher. Not afraid of the pain anymore. I want to find a way to become all that.

In U.S.A.F. B.M.T.S., I had honestly hoped we would have some of this. I quietly taught my squad meditation, and mental Conditioning... We were questioned because they thought we might have cheated on the tests... If given the chance, I at least think we should be given a fair amount of your training... Esp. Those who seek it out. I already knew Karate, and could have taught basic moves that if practiced daily, would have greatly improved survival chances... Also, they do not seem to understand, that Strength and toughness conditioning have Settle in Curves... For example... Runners must be trained to bend their knees a little and to run on the balls of their feet... This will eliminate joint injuries, and shin splints... So many military careers are wasted by improper methods of exercise, when first attempting new forms thereof ! Breathing is also So critical... Cramping, and exhaustion under stress can be controlled and often eliminated by proper yogic styes of breathing, or harnessing Chi as is done by Asian Martial Arts... While you seem to be quietly using much of this and more in your Field, why can we not simply add these principles in at in Every Service Branch. Esp. for those who take it seriously, because they see the Value of putting in more time and effort... Titanium in, Titanium Out.... Garbage in, Garbage out... I think We could Introduce this on a Voluntary Basis... Also, there are some serious medical deficits encountered by our Troops, because big pharma is not Oriented towards Producing a Fully Healed Person Able to Return to Productive Useful Service in their profession. I am a living witness to this terrible deficit in our Nations Medical Strategy and practice thereof. I had to heal myself from G.W.I. Biological Scud Warheads were fired at us... The VA hospitals knew we were afflicted with Mycoplasma Biological Weapons... Their doctors were actually forbidden to heal us. I would like to Talk to any Serious Higher Level Military Authorities you know, who would like to actively put an end to the useless medical treatments Military Professionals are forced to settle for, due to Corrupt Political agenda's... I lost 5 of my disc's, two total hip replacements, and systematic nerve damage, due to Puerile policies, and want to see the next generation never experience such Greed motivated Idiocy. Please contact me if you can put me in touch with such people... You are the first person I have considered Asking this about. Thank You for your time.

Getting past a few days is easy what's hard is not knowing when it's going to end. This guy is cool but he has a sprinter mentality it seems and the marathon mindset where getting jabbed in the face for 12 rounds instead of withstanding a few power punches is harder. Once the adrenaline wears and you're going on fumes with no end in sight and your mind tells you there's nothing to gain by continuing on then that's when the mind really is tested. Patience, perseverance, not panicking, endurance etc. That's what I want to get.

Kevin Durney injuries are part of football. Those who are always afraid to be injured will being injured will always take a more cautious route and will end up getting hurt because they won't give all their effort. Being that I play both guard and inside linebacker there's a lot of punishment that happens. So go 100% and you'll have a lower chance of getting hurt. Not saying you won't but your chances of it occurring will be lower. Like the samurai mentality, the one who is willing to die will not.
