For me and many others, the allure of ARGs and other horror series is not necessarily tricking people, it's more providing a story, visuals, craftsmanship and maybe some puzzles. Obviously everyone has different tastes, but my personal favorite is probably the Minecraft Alpha Versions ARG, not just because of the intrigue but also because they actually made the versions playable.

@@caoilfhionndunbarThe big difference with stuff like Dracula and to a lesser extent stuff like Sherlock Holmes and Frankenstein, is that no one acts like you're "ruining the fun" if you label them what they actually are, fiction. However with much of modern day "unfiction", acknowledging their fictitious nature is seen as taboo, and their creators will assert their realness, and it becomes impossible to tell if fans actually believe it, or are just pretending to believe it as part of the experience or whatever. If these things exist on their own website or forum like SCP for example then I don't see an issue, but when they are uploaded on TikTok or RU-vid where anyone can stumble across it and be tricked into believing it, as shown in this video, it becomes problematic IMO.

Unlike wrestling and ARGs. Frankly if all the people doing ARGs just made an actual interactive game, some sort of video-media game, a video game if you will, instead of pretending that it's real and presented via social media and stuff, I think you'd get a lot more people interested in them.

Hey Captain, great video as always, but i wanted to note that the thing you're referring to in this video as "ARG" is actually called "Unfiction". ARGs are games usually involving complex puzzles that can take place in both a virtual space and real world locations, where many people work together to find a solution. Unfiction is more in line with what you described in the video, individuals making a story through common social media platforms and acting as if it was the real world, often taking input from users interacting with them. ARGs *can* smoothly implement Unfiction aspects to it and vice-versa, but they are still separate forms of media.

I think its important to make the distinction that ARGs and Unfiction stories are two different things, even if the two are often put together. ARGs refers to any community-centric games where the audience has an influence on how the story progresses in real time. Its all about interaction. Unfiction is what you described ARGs to be at the start of the video. Stories where the storyteller pretends things are happening in the real world. But unfiction stories need not to be ARGs; they can just as well be self-contained stories with no community interaction whatsoever.
@x--.
@x--. Год назад
This may be true but having never heard of either of these terms ARG is clearly more descriptive and easier to understand. The whole bit is that it's fiction, to call it "Unfiction" obfuscates the meaning. Besides, the creators are relying upon their audience to protect the illusion, a sort of, you might say, game. I don't claim to be an expert but I can understand why ARG seems more descriptive of what's actually happening (after all, these creators would *not* be doing these videos if people didn't like playing along with the premise).
@lilykittygaming684
@lilykittygaming684 Год назад
@@x--. i haven’t fallowed many ARGs but that main part that make an ARG a ARG is people/commenter participating in the game like asking something directed to the person in the fictional world and then that person replies to that comment in world so this doesn’t seem like an ARG to me (PS sorry for any bad spelling I suck at typing)
@x--.
@x--. Год назад
@@lilykittygaming684 I see your point but it seems like ARG could still apply to this because the viewers 'play the game' -- they play along with the fiction. The creators clearly intend to create a fictional reality based on normally busy places being empty. So... eh... whatever it is, it's pretend.
@deadstriker4415
@deadstriker4415 Год назад
@@x--. tldr at the end. Unfiction means a series of videos where the point is to act as if they are real. ARG, as the name implies, are games. They can be RU-vid channels or twitter profiles or even websites but the point of an ARG is there being an actual game to play, there being actual interaction between the community and the creator in more than just the viewers acting as if it’s real. That could be polls made that actually alter how the story could go, little codes left in videos that need to be solved, whole websites that need to be found and accessed as the series goes ahead. Unfiction is things like IamMaryMary or MypetDaisy, short series of videos where community involvement changes nothing. ARG’s are like EveryManHybrid that had actual ‘challenges’ that some viewers would need to record and send for the story to continue as it was, or TheSunVanished which was based entirely on Twitter and had multiple accounts involved in the story and polls that, according to the creator, actually did change how to story would go from beginning to ending, or even Welcome Home which is only a website with hidden messages and pages in it where the community works together to try and figure out the secrets hidden. TLDR; Unfiction is content with a possibility of interacting with the audience but never in a way that would change the story, while ARG’s are based on how the community acts for the story to ‘expand’ in different ways.

Yeah, a more precise explanation for an ARG is where someone on the internet dumps a bunch of cryptic information about something, often across multiple mediums, and it's more up to the audience to figure out what story is being outlined with the given information. I would, however, say that even this scenario of "ayo bruh where the people go" seems to be presented as actual unfiction and not as an ARG, as there seems to be little opportunity for audiences themselves to come to a conclusion about what happened (compare this to something like that whole "the sun vanished" thing.)
