My heart goes out to this guy he was a hell of a fighter

Watching this harmless old man, one would never know the joy and pride he brought to so many. One would never know the great story he had to tell.

He had so much Heart! He didn't know what the word Cur was...Who fight's right after his wife kills herself because he wouldn't leave the sport...His Fight with Danny Little Red Lopez was epic...It really pushed him over with California and Mexican Fans because of his Bravado and Gameness he showcased on several occasions...He was Humble in Victory and Gracious in Defeat...He suffered the repercussions of his Occupation and this is why Boxing needs a Fighters Union, provide a Pension and medical insurance for the retired warriors. They definitely deserve it.

This MAN! I have been following boxing since 1971. I have never seen a fighter with a bigger heart than Bobby Chacon! He gave so much of himself to the sport of boxing. RIP Champ!!!

Champion, tough guy, world class fighter.......and he paid the price for it. He paid dearly. I give him major credit though, anything in life is going to cost you. Bobby knew what he was getting involved with and he paid the piper.

Chacon lit up the L.A. sport's scene in the 70s. Classic fights with Olivares, Arguello and Little Red Lopez. A true West Coast boxing icon.

for some reason old great boxers remind me of old war vets. so much story and history behind them.

He gave his life for the sport he loved and to his fans. He never held back, win or lose, he was always game.

I knew him in the 90’s. His moms lived across the street from my cousins house, filmore and vaughn. He was always joking around and happy when training my cousin and i. Quick with a smile when riding around pacas on his bike. At the time i didnt even know who he really was.

For many years, I've thought that there should be a "ticket tax" to fund care and assistance for fighters that need it later in life. That's not to say that all fighters need it, but there are many that pay the same price as Bobby, despite never rising above domestic level boxing, and we're never even aware of their predicament . We've all benefited over the years from their dedication and pain so the least the fight trade can do is take a bit more responsibility for their long term aftercare.

Obviously the neurological effects are plain to see but also the physical....... the gait, the shape of Chacon’s body from all the sparring / gym wars and all the fights. A lovely man by all accounts and so it is here. All time great. RIP Champ

Bobby was one of the toughest fighters i ever saw his fights are insane he could get hit with a sledgehammer and keep coming , sure in this video his brain shows the signs of a ruff fight career but he knew the risk , rip champ

I remember in the 80's Bobby had couple of wars with Bazooka Limon. Tuff guys, great fights

----------------I live in Red Bluff and Bobby's family lived down the road a ways in Orroville, so naturally he was a hometown hero to us. Every time Bobby fought it was exciting but when he fought Raphael "Bazooka" (what a nickname!)Limon the first time (I think they had something like 5 fights with each other) it was over the top. I remember thinking to myself at the time that I was watching one of the most phenomenal fights ever. It ranked up there with Ali/Frazier but for featherweights and was voted "Fight of the Year" that year. Neither one of them would ever quit and in the 15th round Bobby knocked Limon down and was declared the winner by the judge's unanimous decision. They don't even allow 15 round fights anymore because it's just too brutal for the fighters. Unfortunately, since Bobby was a warrior who would never back down he tended to go toe-to-toe with his opponents and thus took a lot of punishment. I'm sure he was OK at the end although there had to be some brain damage. But throughout his career he was always upbeat, laughing and happy. One of the greatest, Bobby "Schoolboy" Chacon.

No matter how bad it got for him and how hard it was seeing him towards the end, he always carried himself like a champion in my eyes. Life did beat him down, but he always had this certain undefinable class.

Legendary heart and courage with a troubling story (as with many boxing greats) - one of the first "little men" I loved to watch fight back in the day with my grandpa who himself was a NY golden glove fighter...Immortalized in the Warren Zevon's song "Boom Boom Mancini" (wonder what Chacon may have thought of this track): "Hurry on early hurry on home Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon....."

both cases for and against boxing summed up perfectly in this 30 mins segment. i loved the chacon era of boxing and he was right up there with the very best, but i was so much younger then , now i constantly question my love of this most brutal of sports. As one gets older the so called romance of the sport turns into a turgid reality that maybe this is something not so glorious. And yet i am still compelled to watch the really big match ups. But few if any of the recent 'big fights' comes anywhere close to the pure savagery of the chacon/limon and limon /navarette fights. These men paid too much of a price for making these fights the spectacles myself and others enjoyed as young men. The promoters then peddle the same myths as they do now 'its these guys way out of poverty' you stop boxing and you deny them that opportunity, the key point is many of these boxers had no other options other than boxing, an old etonian or a harvard educated scholar has life options men like bobby chacon didn't .

Deeply sad watch. I only started watching boxing in the late-70s, Chacon was already an established fighter by then, but I remember some of his wars. His last major fight saw him get stopped in 3 rounds by WBA Lightweight champion Ray Mancini. At the time it was pretty controversial, because Chacon hadn't been off his feet and had a reputation for rallying and turning around losing fights. In reality though, Mancini was far too young and strong and Bobby had already taken a huge amount of punishment in his career. Watching this, I'm pretty conflicted. After all, Chacon was not a boxer who went on too long, really. He was only 32 when he lost to Mancini and had just been stripped of his super-featherweight title. That was his first loss in 3 years. Although he'd fight another 7 times, over the next 4 years, he'd win them all, so it's not like he was getting beaten up, as a lot of fighters do as they enter the veteran stage. But watching him here, at only 50 years of age, the damage sustained over his career is apparent. A few years before this film, stories about him suffering from the effects of dementia pugilistica started surfacing. He had a lot of wars throughout his career and you can see the effects here. I also get why people say that he wasn't a good guy, with the 1984 conviction for spousal abuse not in any way justifiable. It's hard to say what was going on with him and tough to reconcile his later life with how he started out, turning pro aged 20 whilst a student at California State University Northridge. He had so much potential and did achieve some great things in boxing, but none of us know how things will turn out. His wife desperately wanted Chacon to quit boxing in 1982 and committed suicide when he refused.
