Vehicle: 2010 Honda Odyssey Ex-L
Engine: Honda V6 J35A7
Problem
Code: P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire
Analysis
Most common causes:
1. Spark plug; OR
2. Ignition coil pack;
Test
1. Take out the ignition coil pack from a GOOD cylinder, e.g. cylinder 4.
2. Take out the ignition coil pack from the BAD cylinder, i.e. cylinder 2.
3. Swap the two coil pack, that is:
* Install coil pack \#2 to cylinder 4
* Install coil pack \#4 to cylinder 2
4. Clear code, start the engine, and scan engine.
Result and Fix
Scenario 1
IF the code changed to:
"P0304 cylinder 4 misfires"
meaning the GOOD cylinder is now bad with the new coil pack, replace the coil pack.
Scenario 2
IF the code comes back with an unchanged misfire code:
"P0302 cylinder 2 misfires"
Then the coil is not the culprit, and it is most likely the spark plug in the BAD cylinder. Replace the spark plug:
1. With a spark plug socket, take out the old plug from the BAD cylinder, i.e. number 2.
2. Thread the new plug on with a small ratchet and fingers.
3. Torque to 13 ft-lb, or hand-tight.
* No grease (anti-seize)
* Do NOT over-tighten
4. Clear the code and have a test drive.
5. All done if code doesn't come back.
Notes
On spark plug replacement:
1. If it has been a while since last spark plug replacement, you may consider replace them ALL.
2. If one starts to go out, it's likely the others will do too.
3. Don't stretch it as it can lead to more costly repairs later.
4. Examples on spark plug replacement intervals:
* Honda engines: no more than 100k miles
* Toyota engines (old): no more than 120k miles
* Toyota engines (latest): no more than 60k miles
On other causes of misfire:
1. Bad fuel
2. Bad fuel injection
3. Engine lubrication, oil getting into combustion
4. Others
Fix the problem ASAP as it can lead to more catastrophic problems on the engine and/or catalytic convertor, which are very costly.

Again, I strongly recommend OE parts for ignition coil packs and spark plugs. You can shop around and get them for reasonable prices. Here are some product links for your information: * Denso spark plugs: amzn.to/3TfXFBG * NGK spark plugs: amzn.to/3vaTcIx * Ignition coil packs: amzn.to/3TA1KBY * Spark plug socket: amzn.to/4aywYz1 * Disclosure: As an eBay Partner and Amazon Affiliate, I may be compensated if you make a purchase from the product links.

What ngk plugs would you recommend for a 2003 Honda Civic LX

@@sherrodgee3075 I missed this question as it was buried in the thread. According to Honda, these are part numbers for 2003 Civi LX: * NGK plugs #98079-5614P * Denso plugs #12290-PGE-A01 You don't have to get it from Honda. Search for genuine parts by NGK or Denso.

In my Hyundai i20 2009 petrol, I had p0301, p0303, p0300 cylinder misfire، I gained all spark plugs and coils also had cracks so I changed all four coils too. Car worked fine for a day then again it started giving p0302 and p0301 error code since I already had new calls and new spark plugs I changed all 4 fuel injectors. Again car worked fine for three days and fourth day again error p0302. This time it is only in cylinder 2. I don't know what to do any help please? Are you explained in the video I will be changing the engine oil and see if that make any difference.

I am not familiar with the Hyundai engine but does it burn/consume oil? Do you see or smell anything from the exhaust? Has the engine been running rough/rich/lean? Basic things to check could be bad fuel, oil, clogged PCV, rich/lean conditions due to faulty sensors (MAF, O2, etc.) or even throttle body buildup. If possible, I'd run a scan to monitor the fuel trims. If nothing else, definitely change oil, fuel (perhaps at a different gas station), and if PCV hasn't been touched on this 2009 model, change it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bGVFDy7I0j8.html Best luck and keep us posted.

Got a 2003 mdx and recently got multiple cylinder misfire. I changed spark plugs and coil packs and still have the same multiple cylinder misfire. I thinking changing the fuel injectors next and see if that will fix it. Any advice if the fuel injectors change doesn't fix the problem, where should I look into next? 🙂
@profsg
@profsg 9 месяцев назад
I'd start with basics and potential simple fixes. Could it be bad fuel, oil burning, or vacuum leaks? Perhaps run a scan to see if the engine is running rich or lean? It can be due to bad MAF (needs a clean?) or O2 sensors. Do the old spark plugs have signs of oil burning? 2003 MDX doesn't appear to have VCM so PCV is what I'd check/replace if it does have oil-burning issues: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bGVFDy7I0j8.html

@@profsg Thank you. Will check those for sure. One of the spark plug was darker than the rest when I removed it and replaced with new ones. It was not wet though. Engine is misfiring pretty bad like it is about to die down every time the engine is running. There is quite a bit of oil leak. Before the multi cylinder misfire, my dad accidentally put diesel but car was towed to a mechanic and drained the gas tank right away. Car was running great for about 4-5 months then comes the misfire.

@@profsg I recently did a compression test and here are the test result: Cylinder 1 - 221psi Cylinder 2 - 50 psi Cylinder 3 - 205 psi Cylinder 4 - 195 psi Cylinder 5 - 195 psi Cylinder 6 - 215 psi I did the drop test were you change coils from one cylinder to another cylinder and the cylinder 2 has no change when doing the test. Doing the compression test did confirm that cylinder 2 is problematic. Could changing fuel injector be the fix? As always, I appreciate your help and your content 🙂
@profsg
@profsg 4 месяца назад
@@generryan5545 The PSI values look good except for cylinder 2, which is rather concerning. Likely piston rings and/or valves. Were these based on a wet compression test? I'd try to find the root of the compression problem and where the leak is, perhaps comparing wet/dry tests plus a leak-down test to find the source.

I have a 2011 Honda Odyssy 3.5 been getting the code 302 changed the spark plugs and it soiled the plug again in 2 weeks so I changed the plug and coil and 2 weeks later got the 302 code again not sure what else It could be any help?
@profsg
@profsg 2 месяца назад
Is there oil/deposit on the #2 spark plug in only two weeks? If it's not bad fuel, likely oil burning due to worn piston rings, etc. Certainly keep up with oil change, and if there is oil burning I'd recommend: 1) Replace PCV: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bGVFDy7I0j8.html 2) Deactivate VCM: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z0bO93r4YSE.html to mitigate the issue. Also, I assume you used OE spark plugs and coil packs.

The ROOT of the problem on that Honda V6 is VCM (Variable cylinder Management) Those bad coils and foul spark plug problems (plus others )will continue unless you disable the VCM.

@profsg

What is the mileage? Does it burn/consume oil? Was it misfire in a specific cylinder and it stays with the same cylinder after spark plug and coil replacement? If it's over 100k miles, it makes sense to replace all spark plugs and only use OE plugs (NGK or Denso) for this replacement. If it burns oil, you will have to address it first. Two major culprits of oil burning: 1) PCV valve: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bGVFDy7I0j8.html 2) VCM on Honda V6: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z0bO93r4YSE.html

175,350 and I’ll have to check and see if it burns oil. It’s just shuttering / shakes while accelerating around 35-40 mph and cylinder 2 misfire . And yes I got GE parts from shop. Got the spark plugs and coil pack changed
@profsg
@profsg 2 месяца назад
I'd prefer Honda/NGK plugs over GE on a Honda engine. But if it's iridium, you are probably okay. For oil burning, check your engine oil level. It's very common on Honda engines with VCM so make sure you disable it for good. As the shuttering while accelerating, sounds like the transmission is having some difficulty. At 175k miles, unfortunately, it's late to start replacing transmission fluid if it has never been touched. Honda transmissions--except for ZF transmissions they used on some models--are not known to last a long time and regular fluid change could have helped extend their lives.

what if the code comes and go
@profsg
@profsg 10 месяцев назад
Is it on a specific cylinder like p0302 or random misfire? If the former, follow the procedure in video to monitor what the culprit is. Otherwise, bad fuel, fuel injector or oil burning might be the issue. Have to monitor the code and engine behavior.
@profsg

How many miles on the plugs? If it's time, like 100k or so, definitely replace all plugs and use OE. Also, next time at the gas station, fill the tank with the best fuel and see how it goes.
