I remember how much of a surprise it was as an English cricket fan to draw this series. Especially when you take into account the previous few series before this one and the 1990 series in the Caribbean. 5-0 ‘ blackwashes ‘ were the norm!! The series in the West Indies in 1990 was the first sign that they weren’t going to be so dominant against England in the future. Plus it made for more exciting games as well.
IMO, Graham Gooch's 154* against this West Indian attack, and on this pitch, with its variable bounce offering plenty of help for the bowlers is the finest achievement by an English batsman in my lifetime, and one of the greatest by a test match opening batsman ever.
