Gooch's unbeaten 150 in the second innings was one of the finest test innings I can remember,. It was against a top class attack, in difficult conditions with limited support.
This was the beginning of a major change in world cricket. The Windies, so long the dominant force in tests, now had a shaky batting line-up following the retirements of several stalwarts. The pace attack was still deadly but the cracks were showing and the Aussies would soon take over as the number one side.
Albeit they enjoyed something of a renaissance when Lara, Chanderpaul, Sarwan and, briefly, Campbell, came to the fore with Ambrose and Walsh still world class.
There should be a verb "to pringle" meaning "to bowl unthreatening military medium dobbers". For example : "The bowler pringled in to the wicket and got carted for 4 over mid wicket"
