Poland has little to do with racism. We don't have such an obsession or problem here because of skin color. Poland has never colonized other countries, so the issue of racism based on skin color has practically escaped us. Painting your face black in Poland means the same thing as a role in such skits. This is not intended to be offensive in any way. If black people are offended, there is something wrong with them. Once, in one of the programs "Your Face Sounds Familiar" in the Polish edition, one of the celebrities chose a black rapper to play and he did it very well. Instead of appreciating the workmanship, the rapper focused on the fact that the white one was painted black.

In Anglo-Saxon countries blackfacing used to be used to offend other people, therefore it became forbidden. I Poland it used to be used as innocent jokes, thus it's not problem. Some time ago there was an affair when one of Western portals noticed Polish blackfacing and told the whole world about it. It wasn't from this cabaret, but it doesn't matter. Everyone was shocked. However it is a lack of knowledge of intercultural differences. There never was slavery in Poland. In times of slavery Poland had its own, internal issues.

I like that you use the word "star". Kabaret performers as well recognizible as actors, Singers, youtubers. They dont get the rage or huge advertisement contracts in(with few exceptions) but they are widly polular. Not every name but every face is well know by kabaret name, by the skit they do. For example the ani mru mru physical comedy guy was recognized as Toffeeck character for many years.

In Western Europe and the US, if you want a black character in your sketch, you find a black person to play that role. In Poland, painting someone black is much easier. You're not gonna see that in a serious production, but for small fun projects it is viewed as okay.

To be honest there was one quite a serious production. Pharaoh, old movie from 1965. Obviously there were no dark-skinned (not black exactly since it's Egypt) actors speaking Polish in Poland, so Polish actors had their skin darkened by some cream. The "true" black face I've seen was only the one in Vabank II and yet still there was no racial jokes/stereotypes beside the painted features.

Unfortunately, nowadays people get offended by even the smallest sh*t (but it's good that in Poland we are not AS obsessed with skin colour as others). I really miss the days of skits like this one, or 'Tygodnik Moralnego Niepokoju', or 'Little Britain', where they absolutely rocked and no one started a contempt lawsuit. I often have to bite my tongue, because in today's world, any joke can get you in trouble. Soon the sense of humour will completely disappear and we will become a gray, smileless world. The parties/groups fight for freedom of speech and expression, etc., especially the LGBT+++ lobby, but as soon as you dare to make a joke about them, lawsuits will follow. Sick.

This performance by three cabarets was the responsibility of the audience. Improvisation for a given term "Stanisław the truck driver", i.e. inventing the entire performance on the fly during the performance. In Poland, artists from various cabarets quite often conduct such performances on a topic given by the audience during the ongoing performance.

15:22 yeah it is acceptable in Poland in some way nowadays - you see "people of color" (gosh i hate that term) are still minority (far below 10%), especially when it comes to cabaret, so if they want to make fun of racism they have to go for this "black face", but at least it's not like how "original term came out from", so they usually do not making fun of them (besides little bit of an accent) but like i said their main purpose is to make fun of racism, that this is ridiculous and bad in general. Fun fact here is that because of such approach and culture, Poles have been called racists especially after one episode of "Your face sounds familiar", where celebrities suppose to imitate some random music stars and of course someone got a man of dark skin while being white... What is funny about that is that everyone in Europe was offended but person who was impersonated by that celebrity said that this was great performance and he doesn't mind at all...

1:13 Lublin is in fact one of the safer cities in Poland (among those with over 300,000 inhabitants) - it has an average of 22 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants (e.g. Wrocław 35, Gdańsk 32, Warsaw 30, Poznań 28, Szczecin 28, Kraków 27, Łódź 24,) . The real inside joke is that the Smile cabaret (but also Ani Mru Mru) are from Lublin :) - and I think this event is also recorded in Lublin, so it's a nod to the audience :)

A few things: 1. Specific city references most commonly mean they sketch is played in that city. That's why there's always an outburst of laughter from the audience as most of them are locals and are always happy for a shout-out from their favourite cabaret. 2. Yes, whenever there's a cross-over between different cabarets they go out of their way to corpse each other. A lot of ad-lib is very common as are the references to the target's former sketches, especially if there were also fumbles involved. 3. Poland has never been a colonial empire neither did we practice large-scale racial slavery (we did have slaves in Middle Ages but most of them were POWs turned serfs, so typically white; and our royalty brought in small numbers of POC slaves to make their courts feel more "exotic", but it was never in thousands like in the US). As such, our history with blackface is different than in case of UK or US. It doesn't have the negative connotations or intentions and more often than not it was simply a device used due to the obvious demographic aspect: we didn't have that many black people in Poland and those we did have were rarely profesional actors/comedians. That's why when we needed a black character portrayed in a film or a sketch (typically to show that character's uniqueness in Polish society), blackface was used as it was easier and cheaper to paint a profesional actor than to find a black person who was fluent in Polish and teach them to act from scratch. With EU's open borders since early 2000s that also resulted in increased demographic mixup, our own black actors slowly but steadily replaced blackface in film and the practice only remained alive in cabarets - typically 3-5 white guys having to play all kinds of roles. However, for the past decade or so it's not really a thing there either anymore, mainly due to globalisation of our culture via youtube that resulted in more criticism from the West where blackface is considered much more offensive than it is in Poland (again, due to vastly different historical connotations).

Also it is so funny, because about half of it was iprovised, like Eustachy's and darker fellow's dialogues, and jokes. that's why when Eustachy asks "Is it far?" Stanisław says "About 15 minutes. In Poland there was no colonialism nor racism so dressing as a girl, a black person or a child was perceived equally innocent since it was not intended to be offensive to anyone. Also calling someone "murzyn" was not offensive until translations from english started. Actually there is a TV show "Twoja Twarz Brzmi Znajomo (polish version of "Your Face Sounds Familiar") where you could've impersonated famous singers regardless their age gender or race. This year under obligation from the producer of the original series an acress Ola Szwed, being black herself, got only dark skin vocalists. It happended supposedly to "avoid racial seggregation". What is it if not a DEFINITION of a segregation based on race. In my opinion this is crazy. Check out Maria Tyszkiewicz singing Rihanna a few years back doing a really great performance. Today it'd impossible due to this pseudo correctness.

The thing about Lublin is that this was recorded in Lublin. The people reacted like that at the AMM member is also because the regular version of this sketch doesn't have other cabaret cameos. That sketch was recorded in 2014, so not too long ago and blackface actually is not that acceptable - whenever it was done in the Polish version of Your Face Sounds Familiar, it was always controversial.

Why is "Kabaret Młodych Panów" translated to "Young Man Kabaret". (Why not "Men"?)

I'm shocked that you said "powyłamywanymi" correctly, my brother had a problem with it until he was 16, but maybe because he has a mathematical mind and you have a humanistic

Since only one person mentioned it and it seems to go unnoticed -this skit is 95% improvised, Stanislaw (driver) was not even aware of guest appearance and while it is a bit of re-annacting of one of the best known 'Smile' performances it diverges completely from that and makes like 1 or 2 'winks' at the audience - this is the reason why it is maybe not that funny as other skits that are keeping tight with the script. About other topic which was mentioned a lot of times already - in Poland blackface is not considered racist, many things viewed in US/west as racist are not really seen as one in Poland - and there is numerous reasons for that. Polish people generally like black humour, ten to have no regard for politicall corectness (which is good is you ask me in the present world that is a bit upside-down) and most of all - have no connection to the main 'roots of racism' - slavery, apertheid, collonisation, more so - polish citizens were enslaved themselves couple of times in most recent centuries - this is why idea of 'making amendmendts in place of our ancestors' is funny or straight offensive to us. To hear more irony straight from the cards of the history - polish army helped to establish first black republic in history - and if you did not do that already - look up polish role in the Haiti revolution, which resulted in polish people recieveing a title of "the White Negroes of Europe" from Haiti's head of state :)

The joke about Lublin simply comes from the fact that this sketch is performed in Lublin. There's nothing special in this city itself. For example when different cabaret made sketch called "Niebo" (Heaven) in City of Bytom God promised Poles highway from Bytom..... To Piekary Śląskie (300m apart from each other). But of course only locals will get it. Someone from Warsaw will only know that both Bytom and Piekary Śląskie are somewhere in Silesia but don't know where exactly.

15:15 Why shouldn't it? It's just acting. If you can dress up as a woman, or as a priest, or as a policeman, or as a Bawarian, why should there be any exception for an African? I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. It's supposed to be funny. They're not mocking or belittling. And it's not that they could just hire an actual African to play that role, could they?

Meeen. You dont get polish humor. Its mostly hyperbolic and ironic. 2nd thing, polsih people have a lot distanse to themself, and if you in Poland they treat you like one of them. So if you have problems with joking about yourself its yours not ouers. Its just jokes.

Nothing wrong with a white person playing a dark skin character. Never meant to be offensive. Men play women, adults play kids, adults play elderly people - IT'S A KABARET!, That's the whole point, to go over the edge, to emphasise the characteristics of either certain group of people or race.

I don't understand this fuss about "blackface". The guy plays a black man, so he smears himself with shoe polish and that's it. How should he characterize himself as a black man? Poland had no colonies, much less black slaves. So we're not phobic about it.

"Black Face" in Poland its not funny because is "black". Funny in that are OUR REACTIONS. In that case: Reaction of a simply truck driver, right-propaganda lighty issued, who propably, first time in his life, saw a black person. We are funny in that. Not a "black guy".
