Whoa! That woke me up. As a 9w1 I have been letting my 8 have a little more of a voice lately. He’s usually fast asleep. I need to stand up and shake out my wings and let them do their work. That are there for a reason, right?!! Thanks doc!!

I am a captain on a fire department in a large city and am a 9w1, what I learned from him is that if I lean more on my 8, I can be kind, loving but also very assertive when it’s necessary, the balance is incredible. I always say if you start a fight with me I will kick your but then pick you up and give you a hug, bandage your wounds and send you on your way. 🤣

It's good to hear about the positive ways 9s can use our specialness to contribute. It is only in the last 2 years that I realised I was choosing to be invisible. To be wallpaper. For most of my working life, I was a leader and a teacher but out of my classroom, in the staffroom at lunch or in meetings, I was not seen. It is a hard choice to choose to be seen.

"...adjusting your personality to the point that your spot at the table just kind of disappears." YES!!! At 42, I married into a blended family. For the first few years my husband's daughter would spend a week with Mom and a week with Dad. My husband's cousin lives with us at the time. The way we had our dining table set up, whenever my stepdaughter was with us, she sat at the head of the table, my husband sat in his usual spot on one side, and our cousin and I would sit on the other side. Whenever my stepdaughter was away, I sat at the head of the table, and our cousin would shift down towards the head, and my husband stayed in his usual spot. One day I realized that neither myself nor our cousin had a fixed place at the table, so I took out the middle leaf to make four distinct spots. That evening I set the table really nicely to make the meal feel special, and I announced to everyone that this was our new seating pattern. There was a bit of fuss from the 12 year old girl whose position had changed most dramatically, but my husband backed me up. It's amazing how much emotional effort that took for me, yet how symbolic and effective it was.

I cannot tell you how many times I have watched your "9" videos and caught myself saying, "How do you know all of this about me!" I originally thought I was a 2 and my husband and I decided fostering was a path we felt led to. Unfortunately, I soon realized I was a "9" and we have had to make some adjustments to how we approached fostering. Instead of longterm placements, we now do short term and respite breaks and it has been wonderful! When you mentioned "change things up" for a 9 and see what happens, I started crying. Doing longterm placements literally broke me. We all have a place in this world to share God's love, but I've learned knowing ourselves well first is an important place to start. Us 9's can't be there for others if we are broken. I'm so unbelievably thankful for you and your videos! They really have changed my life-thank you so much Dr.Tom LaHue! :)

Hi Diana! I am a 9 foster parent too. We did multiple long-term placements. A quick sentence to "write" but I am sure you understand the impact of that statement on our family, and who I am as a person. I am recovering from the emotional & phycological harm. On a journey of healing that is taking years. I also concluded short term placements would be a better fit! I am "so over it all though" that I have stepped away. Not sure if it is forever. Rest is needed.

Really cool. I am a 55 year old 9 with an 8 wing that has had much success in business and as an executive in the large corporate world. The super powers of nine have worked really well in my life. I like the description you gave of a 9 harnessing the strengths of a 3 to leverage the best of both to achieve this success. This is me for the last 25 years. Everything you say here is right. My teams love me and believe I am a great leader because I engage and demonstrate interest and care in what each person does. However, the unhealthy demons of a 9 are all still there. The energy and focus it takes to achieve this success came at a price. The challenges with close interpersonal relationships that matter are the biggest challenges. As I have achieved success and now understand these unhealthy aspects of a 9, I am 100% committed to developing new goals and dreams, overcoming these demons and really opening my heart and feelings because I now understand, see and feel the value of how great it can be. Thanks for your videos. Of course, for all us 9's, they are thought provoking. :-)

I definitely do that for my children. "I'm going to make sure that you feel heard. You are important to me and I want to listen when you're talking." And that is a great goal, but sometimes it gets pretty loud with three kids all wanting to tell loooooong stories about everything. So I have issues knowing when to say, "okay, time to stop talking now"! I try to do it before getting fed up, but still make sure that they feel heard. It's a tricky balance! Interesting point about the wings. Motherhood really clicked the 8 wing on for me. It's been pretty easy for me to find my "style". In this day and age, with so much conflicting information on parenting, I just... don't care. I've read the books, just because I'm interested, and I think about it and I have decided what feels best, so I do that. I don't care what others are doing with their children, or if they have something to say about what I'm doing with mine... I want them to do well, but it's not their business and what they choose has no affect on me, unless I admire it and choose this way as well. My husband, normally so opinionated, never said anything except to get on board with the plan. It's fun, I enjoy it so much. I see other people stressed out about parenthood and I think mainly it's due to always feeling uncertainty about the right thing to do.

I believe people tend to be fantastic leaders because we they terrible managers. A person who watches you and pushes you is not a leader, it's a manager. A person who takes the lead is a leader. They don't push you, they pull you along. My two cents. Great videos!

Im a 9w1 and have been in restaurant management since I was 19. My favorite part is helping my staff learn and move up in the company. My wing 1 makes me love the policy and procedures manual. I’m pretty go with the flow until a tule is broken. I love being able to use the manual to fall back on and it allows me to wrap my head around getting the issue resolved. I do struggle with conflict from higher ups, but have a few strong 8s in my life that let me know when I’m being taken advantage of.
@XXina123
@XXina123 4 года назад
I see many leadership qualities you mentioned in me and I can remember special situations where I was able to tap into them. But I still don't unterstand how to access the wings. I often am "lazy" and cannot convince myself to choose and act on something I want or even things I have to do like cleaning even if I love a clean home. Than I zone out and when I have a moment of clarity and motivation I ask myself why I can't be like this more often. So hard to discribe but the answer you get from others "just do it" doesn't help me at all. How do I tap into my health? Definitely have to watch more of your videos. Best wishes from Germany :-)
@nelt9783

Hey as a 9w1 I totally get what you’re saying. I call the lazy part “passive mode” and the motivated part “active mode”. Either I’m in one or the other. I found out most of the time I was on the passive mode, and then I switched into the active mode only when the deadline is too near/ when it’s too dirty/ when it’s too much accumulated you know. And as he described it, if I well understood, switching for these kind of reasons is going like a 6 (negative part). And so, in order to fight this, I try to find meaning in my goals (3 positive part), set them, going there step by step. I can suggest you a great book “atom habits” by James clear, it explains we should not stick into the goal itself but the process and the mindset instead. I didn’t finished it yet, but I can assure you it’s incredibly interesting and helpful in daily life ✨ Have a great day! Wishes from France

I am type 9 and really recommend Atomic Habit for Type 9. In my opinion, the main concepts of Atomic Habit which is ' achieving our goals by developing small ( atomic) routines that don't require intensity but consistency,' go in line with Type 9. As a saying goes, " Dripping Water hollows out stone , not through force but through persistence' . Type 9 are like water.

Growing up my parents didn’t value or want to hear my opinions or feelings. I believed that I had little value and as a result, my self esteem became super low. I became an actress so that people would listen to my words, even if they weren’t mine. Presently, I’m a preschool teacher for the main reason to be someone in the children’s lives who makes them feel loved, valued, and important on this Earth. I’m a true 9 and am still working on speaking my mind at work. My director doesn’t listen to my concerns and also doesn’t value my hard work and professionalism. I quietly feel so hurt from her and have become quiet because I feel, “what can I do or say to change things?” Thank you for your videos, you are guiding me to use my voice more.

My reasoning for not speaking up at a young age was not a fear of separation from the one I love or the powerful person, but I was fearful of their rage. I didn't speak my mind, because everytime I did, it set off an atomic bomb in the person I was speaking to and I hated being on the other end of someone else's rage so I stopped speaking my opinion and began to instinctively avoid conflict. Although I do fear losing friends if I were to voice my opinion or thoughts because it seems many other seem do not know how to exist together when they disagree on something. I'm very capable of being in a relationship with people I disagree with, because I'm understanding, I know how to bite my tounge, and I'm not overwhelmed by emotion.. I think that if I said some of my opinions, I might lose friends. I want to get better at sharing my thoughts. Is this still valid for a 9?
@BonBonHassan
@BonBonHassan Год назад
Yes this is very valid for 9. This describes more of my life as well. I had a combination of fear or separation and anger from others, and I believe the fear anger might be a symptom of the other and vice versa. If the person gets angry, it may lead to them leaving, being disappointed, etc. I struggle with holding my tongue instead of speaking up for myself, and often think how I don't even enjoy the presence of some of my "friends". My 8 husband has helped me a lot by providing a safe space to speak up for myself

That bit about avoiding the spotlight is true. I’m actually finding I am more bold and take more chances giving online classes as I know people can just leave if they don’t like something vs in person, where leaving a class midway can be harder to do. A fourth, less discussed, response to trauma is called fawning, or people-pleasing. The fawn response is a coping mechanism in which individuals develop people-pleasing behaviors to avoid conflict, pacify their abusers, and create a sense of safety. So for 9s people pleasing could be a strong childhood trauma response.

They are helping me achieve my goals as I recently found my passion after a 3 month solo plunge in the middle east (I'm from America). Before I only merely had interests. As a 9w1, I didn't know that I could tap into that 8 as well.. I thought I could only do 1. But if you say I can tap into the 8 wing too... (That's like a dream to me, but if you're telling me that something that's tangible for me? I'm at the brim of belief). I just found out about this ennegram thing only a few days ago... 24:20 nines like thinking and feeling and taking action, as long as they aren't together. Either action without thinking or feeling, or retreating into thinking and feeling without action. This really hit home with me. I've often noticed how I can spend ours physically exerting myself, so long as I don't have to think at all. As soon as I have to learn a new skill which requires thinking, while learning under someone else which requires feeling and keeping track of all his needs, while trying to learn a new skill, while physically exerting myself, is utterly exhausting. This happened to me when I started wood framing. It felt incredibly demanding at first.

this weekend I have learned, that I am a nine- and now so much makes sense. I thought, I am a five. and, when you don't feel well, try to work on your self and look at your from a totally wrong perspective, that can be even more harmful (not sure, if the even more is true. it just fit like that the past two weeks). so many things made me uncertain about my type and I often wondered, why I am not an anxious person and often feel anger (the reason, why I started a therapy a few moth ago). I guess, I was irritated by the word, The Peacemaker. I guess, that was too special for my understanding at that time. I am glad, I got that cleared by a colleague, who had learned about the enneagram in seminars and uses, what she has learned. I am thankful for that. just not so sure about the sub type. But I will continue now with the videos about 9s

Your videos about 9’s are on target. You are so right about the good and the bad sides of 9. I’m in my 60s and look back on my life and it seems like I’ve lost myself. But, I’m working on finding out who I really am. Never too late, right? There’s only a couple of things that are not 9ish about me. I love my husband but sometimes I just want to be independent. And I know 9s like to merge with people. And my biggest pet peeve is being bored. I do like some routines, but like to do things differently sometimes to try new ways. Other than that, I am sure you are describing me.

Can I make a question? I think I’ve just discovered I’m a 9 and there’s a blind spot that I’m not able to figure out. The other types... they seem to have a role in the system, they have an strong identity, there’s the 8, the strong challenger; 5, the wise thinker; 2, the loving giver... but the 9? What’s the identity of the 9? To merge all of them? To make the best out of the other 8 types? This is a very humble question, I think that’s the piece I need to complete the puzzle in my head. Thank you.

I don't know if you'll see this, but I'm struggling with a couple of things. (1) Once I realized I was asleep to my anger, I worked to bring it to the surface and talk about it more. Unfortunately, it seems like I opened a wellspring of anger that I can't get resolved or closed. How can I process all my repressed anger and move on? (2) Once I realized that I was feeling overlooked, I'm super sensitive about it and I will tell the person that I perceive is overlooking me ALL about it. My question is, how do I move past being so touchy about it? Thanks for these videos, they're really helping me move (or desire to move) to a healthier place.

Aslo my thoughts as a #9 using the great vanilla ice cream analogy... Yes we are truly the vanilla ice cream personalities. But its funny because ppl don't know how to enjoy just vanilla ice cream. Every time we offer our vanilla ( which represents us or who we are ). We have excitement because we understand theres so much extra we can add to it whether it's a different flavor ie. the flavor of their personalities or sprinkles, candies, or syrups. & on the other side ppl offer every other flavor in the world to us & vanilla is like the last resort. Lol like all I got is vanilla

I thought I understood wings until I saw this and now I don't. I'm a 9w8 (my 8 and 1 are 2% difference and are both my lowest in overall scores.) So if 8 and 1 are my very lowest but my 9 is my highest, how could my leadership access them more than any other number which for me is higher? Wouldn't I access another number which is higher and comes more naturally to me?

My thought as a 9 on how we loss connection with others & ourselves without notice isn't to complex but is very long to explain & I hope that you Dr. LaHue & others that read this are willing to read it all the way through & be able to give me honest feedback on my thought, because it feels like it makes total sense in my eyes but outside perspective always helps me sharpen my mental blade. Speaking for myself as a #9 I'm understanding more that the way I communicate through speech & body language to those around me is through emotions & feelings. I call it ( emotional communication ). We're peace makers & #9's do it well not because we solve the problems but we get each side to understand how the other side feels. ( Emotional Communication ). & the reason ppl love to be around us is because we're so laid back & easy going & they feel good around us. ( emotional communication ). But what I notice at an earlier age & now that I've studied the Enneagram is that most ppl unless your a #9, shy away from what they feel is negative emotions & try to connect & speak with others in a way that go's around dark emotions. They do happy things or try to give & even try to plan things to find connection. So as a #9 when I try to connect with someone & say I had a bad day i feel hurt. I get answers like what can I do to help, do you need something? Or hey you shouldn't have to feel like that, let's make a plan so it never happens again. I hear alot of the time also, don't worry about it forget them you dont need them. My favorite is the #7 come on let's go do something fun to get your mind off it. But it's funny because usually it's something the #7 feels is fun because the dont want to be bored smh... & I feel like ppl mean well but while I'm hearing all of this to myself I'm like, but I told you I'm hurt why are we not talking about that? & I start to feel like their trying to help so I should give them the opportunity since I came to them. & the way I communicate ( emotionally ) gets looked over. Even when ppl tell me they fell depressed or whatever dark emotions you can say, they do the same thing and bypass talking about how they feel & jump to everything I describe before. & I sit in confusion because I can't understand why, so in return after many talks doing the same I start to feel like ppl just don't understand me. But since I love them & and want to connect with them I don't give up & try to connect with them the way they connect & start to feel like anything I want to talk about that evolves deep feelings to express I'm going to get conflict because when I press to speak mine or their emotions they deflect. But understand this is how I communicate to the world emotionally & as a #9 I feel like ppl don't talk about emotions, I'm different. So now I start to push down my emotions & when I feel dark emotions I hold them in & when emotional subjects like growing up or sad times in my life or things ppl have done in the past that's been hurtful & also the mistakes we've done to each other that we didn't like come to the surface & need to be expressed. It's boxed within because when I start to express them it's surface level feedback & the same when I ask their feelings. So over time I truly lose my voice. & work through emotions internally. Not because I want to distance myself from everyone, because I enjoy being around loved ones, but more so being a #9 I obtain so much growth & become so much better when I'm alone in my thoughts & it's because I understand how to communicate with myself, & I can't seem to find away for ppl to communicate deeply with me. Thank you for your time I know your a #7 & I understand the length, but being a #9 in growth I had to express this personal thought because it's been awhile since I felt I could (emotionally communicate) with someone who I felt understood me and with ppl I feel get me internally. Even if the thought I have isn't totally right to them. I'd enjoy feedback from all. My goal is understanding.

Wow this is really deep. Thanks for sharing. I think what you are saying is that when you share your feelings (fears, pain, dark stuff) people try to make it better, instead of what they should actually do, just hear you out and try to understand you. Is that correct?

@@twlahue yes, and now I understand that clearly so I stand my ground & I don't change my focus. Because I understand where I can lead myself. I love all my friends & family but sometimes you have to find the right person to reach out to at the right time.

I experience the same thing , no one is ready to hear my emotional stuff , but they are willing to share their emotional things with me , they love how I listen deeply , how I connect and don't run away , how I understand . To me it seems like they don't have the capacity to hold that space but they're humans and in desperate need for it . I found someone special , a friend of mine , that has that depth and capacity , she's the only one that I go to when I want to be heard and understood . She appeared in my life when I gave up on finding someone that understands me . It's a journey , never give up . I go to others to lighten up my mood , or advice , or feedback , they're awesome too , but in a different way .

OMG that thing about vanilla has always cracked me up! Many many years ago, (In the early 90's)someone told me I reminded them of vanilla...and that's exactly what I told them...basically "Thank you!...You know...vanilla IS actually a flavor, and damn good one, right?" (and then a year or two later there was a t.v. commercial for Breyers Vanilla Frozen Yogurt that basically played the exact same scene out, but that's another story) I believe I'm a five and I'm here watching this because my son is a 9,..., but when figuring out my enneagram type, 9 was a close runner up. Heck, maybe I AM a 9 ...I thought that business about not wanting to be bothered was a 5 trait...In fact it's the one that most convinced me I was a five....I find most people to be more difficult than I can justify tolerating for any longer than necessary... I actually "like" being "vanilla-like" and if people can't "taste" my vanilla due to all of the other louder flavors out there, maybe it's their loss?...I think of it as protection against too much attention from the wrong people...lol :)) Update: Nope! I just listened to "Am I a Type 5" and that nailed it. Why does type 9 seem to also be so close, I wonder? Maybe I started out as a 9 and major stress turned me into a type 5. I wonder if that's possible.

I'd argue the US culture is type 9, not type 3. And you see that in our toggling back and forth between intervention and isolationism. When the society is overall healthy, it does tend to go to three, but our national myth and our idealized hero is the cowboy, the man with no name, and the uncrowned king. Not the business man, the ceaser, or the great Gatsbys of the world. Which also means as the culture comes under pressure, we can expect it to show the negative aspects of the six: fear, anxiety, paranoia, and a withdraw into isolation while being terrified of being without a group.
