Want to make your own fizz?! Here's how I've been brewing my own homemade ginger beer for the last year. It's a fun, simple recipe and tastes so good! Low in sugar, filled with fermented goodness rich in probiotics and good for our guts. Making our own fizz also saves us money and there's nothing more refreshing than a cold glass of tangy ginger beer on a hot Summer's day.
I learned this recipe & method from my neighbour & found it super helpful to watch the process, so although I've included the written recipe below for your reference I wanted to make a video documenting the process too - I hope you find it helpful with my wee tips & tricks. 🤗
GINGER BEER RECIPE:
Feeding your bug:
Feed it 1 tsp ginger powder + 1 tsp raw sugar a day.
It will be ready to make a brew with after 7-10 days.
On the day you make a brew double feed it AFTER brewing to kickstart it again.
The brew:
1. In a food grade bucket mix;
- 4 litres of filtered water
- juice of 2 lemons
- 1.5 cups of raw sugar
- the strained liquid of your bug (I use a nut milk bag to strain through)
Stir thoroughly until all sugar is dissolved.
Meanwhile divide the strained off ginger bug solids into two; half goes back into it's jar with 300ml water & 2 tsp ginger + 2 tsp sugar (the double feed), and simply compost other half/gift it/or start a second bug. Then repeat process of feeding bug for another 7-10 days etc as above.
2. Bottle into plastic bottles (one batch fills 3x 1.5L bottles). Leave about 2 inches of headroom at top of bottle.
3. Add 3 sultanas to each bottle.
4. Tighten lids and store in coolish spot / pantry for about 10 or more days until bottle is tight and ginger beer is fizzy.
5. Refrigerate & drink as you wish.
🍻 For a spicier ginger flavour I’ve infused fresh ginger into the brew as you'll see in the video. You can also experiment with fruits to make strawberry fizz etc too at the brewing stage.
🍻 If you need a break you can refrigerate the bug and leave it dormant like while you’re away etc then resume feeding to reactivate.
