Man wish this video was made two years ago when I set up our room. While not a dedicated home theater room I finally had the space that allowed me to install overhead Atmos speakers. I just measured my surrounds and they are about 10 inches too high. Every other measurement based on your previous video and the Atmos video is spot on. I just messed up on height placement of the side and rear surrounds.

The surrounds bed layer - this is a tough one to follow considering that I have legacy set up (surrounds are placed 2' above ear level). Room is 14'W x 17'L, has two rows (second row on an 8' riser - couch is close to rear wall). My mains mid driver is 3' from ground (MLP ear level is at 3.5') and I would fall into the surrounds and back speakers at 3'9"mounted...this would put the 2nd row seating blocking the rear channels. If I took the measurement from the riser, those rear channels would be too close to the 2nd row seated listening position. So what do you do to make the best when you have multiple rows as there is no way you could do that type of low setup (which is just impossibly ridiculous to achieve unless you only have one row). Theaters don't run their surround speakers this way either, or is that all still legacy...even the Seattle Atmos theater (Paul Allen Cinerama) which had been fully redesigned for Atmos has surround speakers way up... Thanks for the thoughts and feedback Steven

Do these placements and height apply to a basic 5.1 setup as well, or is this only for an atmos system?

Thank you for this. If my fronts are in a booksheld, would I still want to angle them to MLP? I can get them to the edge of the shelf if facing straight out. But when I toe them in, part of the baffle sits behind the front of the shelf.
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
Ideally yes they should be toed in as we want to be on axis or close. Can you pull them out so the inside edge is flush but the outer edge sticks slightly out when angled?

Nice Work again!!!!! When we re talking about home theater we mean home and not all of the spaces got the conveniece for us to spread the speakers and fix a perfect symetric triangle. This is an ideal scenario or a space which is dedicated for home cinema. None of the youtubers have mentioned how to do it, in case that we cant make and have perfect distance among speakers and mlp. Any idea?

Use the inbuilt room correction of your receiver or buy something like a 3d space calculating set like the HT a9. For living room audio this channel is not, and many of the so called mistakes he mentiones in his videos are things you can happily put up with if you don't have a dedicated theatre room but a halfway decent avr. A not optimally configured Atmos setup is still far superior to none at all. I've tried it many times in many different room configurations and while not ideal most people will be happy with the results even though they might be compromised.

Steven looking for help/suggestion for on atmos in ceiling speakers for a 9.1.6 setup with 2 rows of seating. 2nd row is 14" higher. Ceiling height is 9'9" for front seat. Do you put middle atmos above 2nd row (main seat) or split the difference. Them on front and rear atmos do i split the riser difference
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
Placement is based on your primary row so if thats the rear row the yes top center is above the rear row. If you want some quotes on some in ceiling speakers contact me at my contact info in the description and I can hook you up!

Hello home theater gurus, Love your videos & hope to follow thru all your videos. As for the surrounds & surrounds back I believe you are saying in regards to direct speakers. Would bipole be placed as this way as well? Hope to hear your advice on this
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
Yep bipoles are approved by Dolby to be used for atmos bed layers. Just toe them in as the bipole effect is found on axis. Dipoles aren't recommended because of the out of phase drivers causing a diffused sound that can smear object placement. Of course if thats what you have I wouldn't not do atmos because of that. I'd still use them and upgrade later.

@@hometheatergurus thanks for the reply. If I would to have 2 row of seats. Where do I place the surround speakers if I'm using bipole. Would in between the both row work?
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
Here's a good link on the topic www.audioholics.com/loudspeaker-design/surround-speaker-dipole-vs-bipole As you see you need to be on axis to get the desired effect. With dual rows you'll often use dual surrounds for best sound to both rows or give the primary row priority and use one set of surrounds. With bipoles I'd personally do the same. Lay it out for your row or use direct radiating and have set of surrounds run parallel per row. You'd want 8 Ohm speakers so when in a parallel the amp sees 4 ohms. The same concept with atmos. If you want the best sound to your seat or row it has to have priority. There are tricks when using direct radiating to get a more even spl to dual rows even when giving one row placement priority when laying out . I'll probably do a video on it.

What if my front left HAS to be 3 ft farther left of center than the right?
@loukeeper9997

So if tweeter height on fronts is 39”, ears about 36-37”, should sides and rears for 7.1.4 be at 39”, or at the 39 x 1.25=48.75 inch height? Seems like a confusing topic. Thanks and keep up the great videos!

Hey Lou, raise the surrounds up about a foot , rears must clear seat backs so may be higher.

One thing I never see is when you look at the dolby or trinov diagram, the sides are not aligned with the L and R channels but I never see a recommendation on how far they should be or is there any specifics about their placement aside from the angle. Thanks!

Thanks for this tip! I used the string and was pleasantly surprised to see that the MLP is perfectly placed in proportion to the mains. Question about the side surrounds location when you have multiple rows... In my case, I have two rows and the sides are placed on stands somewhat between the two rows but toed in toward the MLP in the front row... Is that ok or should they be moved so that they form a straight line across the MLP as you showed in the video?
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
I have surrounds for each row but if you only have one set of surrounds I'd place them on the main row assuming you also have rears.
@wells2671
@wells2671 4 года назад
@@hometheatergurus Ok thanks. I do I have rears, and the room is probably too small for what I'm trying to achieve, but I'm doing my best to make it work. I'm using the Andrew Jones-designed Atmos-enabled Pioneer Elites in the Front and Rear Surrounds and the Elite Center Channel, while the side surrounds are also Pioneer but they the non-atmos SP-BS41. Due to the barn-shaped ceiling in the room (where only the middle 4ft of it is flat while left and right of that flat area the rest of the ceiling is angled down toward each side wall), I decided that the best way to get decent ceiling reflection for the atmos enabled speakers was for them to be in the front and rear, which allowed me to better aim the atmos driver towards the flat portion of the ceiling. The Front mains are towers but the Rears are bookshelf style, so they are wall-mounted which makes it a little harder to move them at this point. All things considered, I think the overall effect/result is pretty good, but I'm sure I could tweak it a bit more to get those 60-degree angles all around like you mentioned.

Everybody, i mean everybody, suggests that you should not place the L R speakers near the wall. Especially in corners and you are doing the exact opposite!!! What do i miss??? :/
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
Define everybody! Are you familiar with quest or Erskine? Cedia award winning home theater rooms. Erskine even spent weeks at dolby helping them implement atmos for home theater. I'm actually friends with one of their designers. Most of their designs have mains in front corners flanking the screen next to side walls and are often even Inwalls. Remember this isn't two channel where we run full range. We are crossing to subs so the worse modal issues are handed off to subs. For the ones above the subs we are avoiding those modal issues. See the episode on room modes. The mains have to be placed where they need to be placed or else they are out of tolerance and we get stuck with the sound bar effect and a small sound stage and gaps when panning to surrounds. The mains may or may not be in a corner or next to a wall but they go where they go. Be careful following the crowd, they aren't building and designing high end rooms using science. Home theater is full of people spreading wrong methods and confusion. We aren't born knowing this stuff so you have to be careful what advice you follow.
@Cleric996
@Cleric996 4 года назад
@@hometheatergurus Look I am new to your channel, I have seen 4 episodes and I was even surprised when you said that there is no problem placing the subs in corners!!! (ep. 8 I think). Audioholics, Acoustic Fields is the channels I am currently watching and those dudes have been designing home theater rooms many years now. It is what they say at least. And no, I am not familiar with quest or Erskine but trust me I will. Do not get me wrong, I am not writing to judge you. I am just confused! It is like I’ve found out that earth is flat! :/ Btw, what is your opinion in placing the subs higher, off the ground and in different heights ?
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
@@Cleric996I understand there is lots of conflicting info out there. All I can say is be careful who you follow. I know Gene from Audioholics, he's a great guy and we are in agreement on subs to the point that a year ago he asked me to do an article on sub placement and setup. We follow the same science. As for acoustic fields I also watch some of his stuff but he's often challenged in comments and doesn't even know how to answer some of the arguments as the arguments often prove him wrong. Be careful of places selling panels and plans. Acoustic fields is definitely not following the path that science has led main stream high end home theater in the last 20 years. I like their channel but often times feel what's being taught is incorrect or half truth leaving out newer methods. A lot of what you'll see on my channel is taught by THX and HAA as we all follow the same principles and science. These guys are leading home theater science and their certifications are held by professionally trained home theater designers. A lot of what we do is based on people like Floyd Toole who has done extensive studies on in room acoustics and led the Harmon room mode studies which we all use for multiple sub placement.
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 4 года назад
And to add to the above as I mentioned audioholics is agreement with what I follow. Here's a copy and past from Gene's article on subs. Figure 1b. 4 Corner Placement In you are running four subs, the ideal locations for them in a rectangular room are the corners of the room. Assuming all subs are identical, this will achieve up to 12dB of increased output when compared to a single corner loaded subwoofer. Placing the subs in all 4 corners will maximally reduce standing waves through destructive interference and provide the most linear and consistent frequency response for all seats. Used in conjunction with global equalization, this option provides nearly as good frequency response and seat to seat variation as the midwall placement with the huge advantage in efficiency. This can allow you to use smaller less powerful subs compared to the less efficient 4 midwall placement. Heres the link www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-setup/multiple-subwoofer-setup-calibration-1 I do understand that this hobby is littered with bad, old and confusing information. Just because someone has been doing something for years doesn't mean they are up to date or following the best methods.That's why I've started this Channel. That and I've had several people I've helped through the years request I start making videos.

Panagiotis Giagtzoglou acoustic fields doesn’t even advocate multi subs. He is way behind on the science, gene warned about him in one of their videos.
