The doors are almost done!! But before I finish them I thought I would give you a run down on why they have been the most complex thing I have done on the house so far.
I really wanted to create super minimal doors. Solid pane of glass with a handle on the outside then timber and brass on the inside. The idea seemed like it would look amazing. But boy oh boy I didn't really think through the execution.
These things have taken so much effort. The timber frames needed to be perfect to the millimeter. Days of hand cutting, filing and fitting individual pieces of brass. Fitting door hardware in exactly the right spot. Meanwhile grappling with the challenge of half the door being glass. Patience and tenacity have been the theme of this part of the build.
But I am very close to finishing these doors and I am LOVING how they are looking. I really wish the camera did them justice. They are certainly one of a kind but not sure I would do them again. Hopefully I can finish these doors soon and get them on the house for you too see. I can't wait to share them. I have a bit of work to do between now and then though.
Next steps is to work on the door jamb get that exactly right and make sure the doors will swing properly. Until next time.
Don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

Thank you Leo. Can't wait to have them installed. A bit of work to do before that.

As with every other project so far, these doors look stunning! Many can make something complex, but to make something complex look simple is demonstrates your skill and perseverance to getting it right. Can't wait to see them installed and how the windows and doors will compliment each other. Keep on trucking!

Haha I am not sure I make it look simple. You don't get to see the tears haha. Thank you Chris I really appreciate that. I am very excited to get the doors up and see how they look. Thanks for following along mate.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse your process is far from simple, but the completed look is very minimal to the observer. Not realizing how complex it was to get such a simple refined look. Happy to follow along, may get inspired some day and build my own house with some features you’ve put in yours.

@@18chris0089 absolutely what I try to create. Minimal is hard to do it turns out. I enjoy trying to create an aesthetically pleasing look as well as functional. I didn't want exposed timber because of the affects of weather. Turns out a solid piece of glass also looks cool. So glad it's helping with some ideas. Can't wait to see yours 👊

I love seeing another installment of this project popping up. Your ideas turn out so well and look amazing. I can't wait to see how those doors look within the rest of the build so far. Keep smiling 😊

I'm planning to install French doors in my build as well and you absolutely, positively convinced me to go the Home Depot route! 👍 Of corse, mine will look like trailer trash next to yours. But, since I'm in the states, doubt I'll ever have to park next to yours, thank goodness. lol. Again, fantastic job! Great craftmanship, great attention to detail. Just try and keep what little bit of sanity you have left after these doors and windows. 🤣

Haha look my first attempt at making doors have become way too complicated. I think if I was making doors that were a lot more traditional they would have been much less work. We might have to come back and try again another time. Awesome you are building and French doors will be awesome. I would definitely buy those though, too many moving parts. I can't wait to have the doors done. I am hoping it's the last overly complex thing I do for a bit.

Once again you've knocked it out of the park Phil! I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times, but I don't think I'd have the patience (or skill) to keep up the attention to detail that you manage... I'm pretty sure my dad jokes are better though 😉

Just watched for two minutes and listened to you saying that the doors have to fit perfectly after sitting them into the doorframe and just thought, "That's Nightmarish!"
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Год назад
Haha "nightmarish" is exactly what it was and it did not disappoint. It took a long time to get them right but it came together after a lot of blood, sweat and swearing.

When the Tiny House movement began it was all about having a small cheap space with the bare necessities. Today it's more about how much more LARGER, luxurious, and expensive the tiny home is which essentially makes it into a house, not a true tiny house. But whatever works for ya.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 3 года назад
I am sorry my project offends you. Ironically I partially agree with your sentiment. My goal was never to build a large tiny house, it has been a byproduct of the design. I don't actually agree with large tiny houses, we are moving to the point where huge tiny houses are built on site and can't ever be moved. At which point why bother hanging axles off of the foundation? The reason I went with two smaller trailers is so I could move this house myself without a tow truck. And I wanted to explore if it was possible. I work from home mostly and wanted to create a space that was livable and I could spend a lot of time in. This design facilitated having that. As for being luxurious - I see no problem creating spaces that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. My doors look expensive but doesn't mean they are as I am making them myself. Sure I could get a $50 door from the hardware store but I have also seen the impact of weather on exposed timber and have already had to replace one door on my current tiny house. Anyway thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I am sure my channel won't be for you, but I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse Actually every movement is also about continually evolving itself. So, we have the luxury houses and the tiny houses mixed together, like chocolate and peanuts or peas and carrots. Probably the only people who really have any say in the matter are those who construct their own homes and I myself have not done such activity yet. So I retract my first and ignorant comment here and wish the best for you and your project man, you're doing a great job!

@@RealityTrailers Hey thank you man. I really do appreciate the perspective. So true any movement evolved from it's roots. I guess all we can do is decide at any given time how we want to interact with it. I agree I have had to remind myself that going tiny is about more than the house we build. The presence of mind it can foster. Living with less. The journey of living in a restricted space. But most of all I love the simplicity of building my own shelter. Something primal and deeply satisfying about that. I am grateful that I have been taught skills that allow me to build it a little nicer. And I hope to share some of that with others. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Hope you stick around for the build - keep me honest ;). Have an awesome day mate.

@@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse We're all born ignorant and throughout our whole life, we can either learn from ignorance or continue ignorance. Sometimes it takes a little push in some way shape or form to learn. You pushed me in the right way, cool, calm and collective ; )

You are making the classic mistake of explaining every single step of a process that is a 1 off to suit your job. You spent hours making a vid explaining it. When you could have shown a lot more things of interest.
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse
@TwoHandsandaTinyHouse 3 года назад
Hey Paul. Thanks so much for the feedback and following the journey for so long. Perhaps you can expand on why you think it is a mistake. Also What would you like to see that is of more interest? I would love to hear your ideas so I can continue to improve the videos I totally appreciate that this video was very unique to my situation but I shared it in detail for a couple reasons. 1. I try to share the challenges I face as part of the journey of building such a complex house. 2. I share this stuff so that it might help others. Sure I don't think anyone in their right mind would try and copy these doors but there has been a lot of transferable learning for me. i.e. just adhesives for example, the affects of UV on different adhesives, you can't reapply silicon over silicon, reactant metals, primers and adhesives. Certainly someone might not be doing something this complex but when they can't work out why their gutter wont seal even though they have put silicon over the top of the old stuff. For example I have though of doing a more "how-to" series where I do actually talk about tiny house building with more common approaches and products. Is that something you think would be valuable. What would you like to see in those kinds of videos (either as someone who would consume or someone who is experienced and has a good idea). Love to hear your thoughts and thank you for your input.
@persebra

WTF are you talking about? the vid is only 15 minutes long and it's about the front doors, a very important part of the house. What do you mean "a lot more things of interest." like what, the local wildlife??? The ENTIRE channel is all about him building his ONE-OFF tiny houses with one-off custom features. it would not be a very interesting chanel otherwise. Everyone who is viewing this channel understands that. Someone else might what to do something similar, like his robot crane. You are making the classic mistake of complaining about what somebody else's content should be about.
