That melody Dionne sings is an Olympian feat! The vocal strength it takes to sing like that for 10 minutes straight is amazing. She is sweating by the end of it and she never misses a note!

Dionne's voice was like shimmering silk here! So effortless and with the slightest bit of soulful grit as a counterpoint to the soaring high notes. Also she looked fantastic in the red dress and a great hairstyle for her. Johnny sounds great as usual.

The fact that Leo Kottke was on a major label and had exposure on national television, along with artists such as Dionne Warwick, Malo, The First Edition, etc., is a testament to how eclectic the music industry was in the early 1970s. Programming had not yet become as formatted and demographic-driven as it later became.

The late great Mickey Jones on drums with Kenny Rogers. He had a storied career playing with Trini Lopez, Johnny Rivers (on the go-go albums) then in 66 played drums on Bob Dylan and the Hawks world tour for a year until Dylans motorcycle accident. he then joined The First Edition and later turned to Hollywood and became an actor. that's Mickey in Sling Blade playing the drums on the porch when they're all jamming. he was one of the best!

So...I was working for Leo Kottke at the time this was recorded and here is an interesting tidbit. For Leo's "performance", and I assume a few other artists as well, there was no audience. He was up on a studio stage (I don't recall where exactly...it was 50 years ago), and played 3 songs. They spread his recordings out over 3 separate MS episodes. If you look at his footage, you never see an audience. I imagine that was standard procedure for many of the performers. The headliners probably had most of the only real audiences.

Dionne singing the trumpet like on ‘Say a Little Prayer,’ is pure musicianship! Taking absolutely nothing away from Johnny, who is one of my top 5 all-time pop male vocalists, but Dionne sang his songs better than he sang her’s and on that last song they sang together , she was doing some mad harmonies! That little medley she sang of her songs, she used to do a 33 minute medley in concert!
