Omg Robin is the looniest dancer ever. I crack up every time he sticks that leg out lol. He makes Elaine from Seinfeld look gifted. Boy, The Bee Gees were all over The Midnight Special in ‘73 … they were natural hosts. I can’t think of another band I would rather sit and around and listen to all day. That Beatles medley they did on the other episode was beyond good.

@myguitardetective5961
@myguitardetective5961 9 месяцев назад
"Run To Me" is one their greatest ballads... Robin's second lead vocal on that raises gooseflesh....Mo playing acoustic guitar in standard tuning (that Barry can't do either...he was the undervalued top musician of the trio and the "glue" that holds the 3-part harmony together )...their incomparable vocal blend is like the Everly Brothers but on massive steroids...
@KittyGrizGriz
@KittyGrizGriz 8 месяцев назад
Agree with both of you, love Run To Me, gives me chills every time 😅
@brcfan9
@brcfan9 3 месяца назад
@@myguitardetective5961 Yes Mo was a great musician and guitarist as well as their music arranger. Barry always complimented Mo on his talent and said he was invaluable and irreplaceable to the band. That's the reason he didn't perform with Robin after Mo died as he said the Bee Gees could never be the Bee Gees with out Mo. He was completely devastated with Mo's death and did not want to continue on as the Bee Gees. A decision he is crucified for making by the rabid Barry haters to this day. Also your little dig at Barry was uncalled for about his guitar playing. Barry learned open tuning when he got his first guitar at nine. His neighbor, a World War Two army veteran who had been stationed in Hawaii taught him to play that way.( Also both Barry and Andy are lefties but played guitar with their right hands. )Just after they signed their first contract in Australia the record company sent all three brothers for 6 weeks of guitar lessons. Mo and Robin learned custom tuning and Barry was told he was fine with open tuning as it would just confuse him. He's done just fine with that method and several people working with them at the Criteria Recording studio have said he is the best rhythm guitar player they have ever seen. Of course he can't compare to Mo as he was just totally awesome on his bass and he also was great on the keyboards. His talent and proficiency on any instrument he tackles is just awe inspiring!.
@myguitardetective5961
@myguitardetective5961 3 месяца назад
@@brcfan9Settle down, that wasn't a dig at Barry. I merely pointed out that Maurice, while not one of the two principal composers in the band, made up for that by being indispensable in other ways including being the best musician and guitarist. In fact Barry's tuning, Vestapol D Tuning, was a huge plus for him as a songwriter! He doesn't know theory or how to write music (any more than McCartney or Lennon ever did); but, in that tuning, that turns out to be a boon for your creativity! Every time you pick up the guitar, any of the basic 4 chords that Barry used could be moved around anywhere if your imagination is not constrained and restricted by theory. And, that's precisely what he did! I've tabbed out most of their biggest hits as Barry plays them and I'm always floored by how he took that limitation of 4 chords and turned them into into a HUGE catalog of hit songs: 4 CHORDS! I showed this to a friend of mine and his jaw dropped. He said, "that's GENIUS!" and, indeed, it is....I may do a video on this subject at some point.

Wow. John Kay was impressive in this. I saw Steppenwolf live in Chicago in 1970 or 1971, but I'd never seen him play solo before I saw this video today.

There is so little footage of Jimmie Spheeris that this is just precious even though these aren't my favorite of his songs. If you're hearing him for the first time, please go listen to "I Am the Mercury" or "The Dragon is Dancing."

This is incredible-I’m a big JS fan, but never imagined I would actually be able to watch this type of quality live footage of him. It’s ever so slightly disappointing that the featured songs are from my least favorite album of his, thus perhaps not the best showcase of what he was capable of, but ANY video is a treasure. I’m so happy that Midnight Special is posting all these old episodes for posterity.

@@stantonthezag1109 Seeing JS is a real treat! Thank you Midnight Special for posting this episode. Jimmie died young, (way) before the proliferation of video and streaming. Any video of Jimmie is precious.

To think both Steve Miller Band and the BeeGees were about ready to take the 70s by storm. Two groups that were in the process of reinventing themselves. All be it different directions. Steve Miller’s next three albums became rock anthems and mega hits and the BeeGees more or less invented disco which was the precursor to today’s RandB and hip-hop and the rest is history. Amazing when you think about it.

it's amazing to see the white guitar that was to originally go to Jimmy Hendrix. Miller had a pair he bought from a guitar store that ordered them for Hendrix.
