I have lived north in the Florence area for more than 20 years and visited the area many times but your videos showed me things that I've never taken the time to see! Thanks Marc
Thank you for coming along, Kenton! Next week's episode on the Central Oregon Coast will include a segment filmed in Florence, so we invite you to join us next Wednesday, too.
Thanks so much, Thomas! Add to that the consistently cool summertime temperatures in the 60s and 70s that you can almost bet your life on. That's why we ended up back on the Oregon Coast this season. With such a deep winter snowpack remaining at elevation, we couldn't run to boondock on higher ground early this summer to escape the heat, so it was off to the coast instead.
Marc, You weren't kidding when you were trying to kayak back to the marina against the current and tide. Felt sorry for your friends in the inflatable. Thanks Don
Sincerely love this area...Have explored it several times...Looking forward to seein what you find.....Willing to bet you DID NOT vistit Misty Meadows just south of Bandon...For me, Best jams, Jellies, Syrups, etc. money can buy...
Charleston also supports a massive pink shrimp fishery. I lived there for 20 years, as a commercial fisherman. I’m from Ojai, Ca. where I now live again, but I certainly mis Coos Bay. Yes, it’s a rough, blue collar town. But if you like the outdoors, good luck finding a better place to be. In my free time, I’d forage for wild edibles in the surrounding forests. Mychorizal (?) mushrooms. They need the living trees of forests to survive, and are highly desired in the high-end culinary market. Chanterelles, matsutakes, boletes, etc.
Nice! I'll confess that's a subject about which I have zero knowledge whatsoever. I could be lost in the wilderness and starve. 😁 We sincerely enjoyed our time in the Coos Bay area, just as we feel about the entire Oregon coast.
@@GrandAdventure You did a great job, really showed the beauty of the area! It's a pity you didn't get to see shore acres in the winter though, they have a spectactular christmas lights show during the winter with live music at the caretaker's house and hot cider, it's really a must see!
We love Human Bean, Joe!! We always stop at the one in Lake Havasu, AZ every time we pass through there, which is at least once a year going to and from Quartzsite. There, they were thoughtful enough to make the drive-through sufficiently large that we can stop at the window even while towing our fifth wheel.
This trip has been on our list for a few years now - Looking like next summer now. Love the information you present and how you put this together, Great job!
I’m new to Bandon / close to Coos Bay Video was informative. How you managed to take your videos without hordes of people and cars was a feat in itself.
Thank you that was awesome as usual absolutely love Grand adventures especially on the coast in Oregon and different places where I've been and now I can't do this anymore but through you I can still there that again thank you so much Grand adventures forever take care God bless you and keep you in his care 😅
Charleston is our favorite place for a great seafood meal when we visit our coast. Shore Acres State Park puts on a beautiful Christmas light display every year too
So we've heard about those holiday displays, David! While in Charleston we enjoyed the food at Monkey Business (several times), Portside and Miller's At The Cove.
It deserves that spot on your list. We'll have two more episodes upcoming from the Oregon Coast. Next week will be the central coast, whereas the following Wednesday will be the northern coast.
I am always amazed at the distances you travel. And mostly just to inform and entertain us. 👍 Cheers from the 2 Tasmanians still in Colorado after 2 months!!
Oh, there's a selfish motivation to our travels, Leigh! 😁 And really, the distances aren't too bad. We typically move once a week, and try to keep it at ~4 hours or so. Occasionally a bit more, but often less.
I like to see where these beautiful places are, so I went to take a look on Google Maps. It was fun to zoom in on the locations you were talking about. i guess I'm a map geek. What a great area to visit! Suzane
Thanks for that feedback, Harold & Joanne! Usually in museums, we like to explain the museum's purpose and then let the exhibits do the talking. I talk too much as it is. 😁
The Oregon Coast is so, so beautiful❤ Hoping to do a little next May/June. Going to try and get a spot in Florence/Winchester Bay area for the Chainsaw Competition.
This is a pretty good representation of our area. The views and video are very well done. You have a lot of the places we're known for. The Egyptian Theater in downtown Coos Bay, which you showed, is one of only 7 left in the USA. And our Wurlitzer organ is still played regularly! (But... it's pronounced "Orygun" and "Cape Arago" has a long "A" The at the beginning. I frequently ask locals when I'm not sure about how to say their town)
Ok we can probably establish that seals look absolutely adorable poking out of the water with their big nosdrils and those eyes but waters in which they swim... all that frothy white stuff crashing into the rocks... filled with everything that wants to eat them. Out in those parts tides are ridiculous. Some areas see like 20 feet of water coming in and going out. Glad that you turned around instead of getting into a boatload of trouble. I have been caught in high currents being carried off into timbabptu and it is no fun. I was actually looking into potentially (at least for my inflatable kayaks) get this fancy jet propeller thing (assuming I got a big fat bonus check and one was on sale for 50% off) I think its called bixby. It slides into where keel slides into on these inflatable kayaks so that when you are tired and exhausted, you could at least have that to help you sort of deal.
Most interesting. As a former sailor and windsurfer, I've long been intrigued by the concept of kayak sails. I've never taken the plunge, however. Boy, you are indeed on a binge! Thank you very much for that.
We got a little taste of Port Orford's scenery and history when we stopped in town for some fish from the Crazy Norwegian as we were driving to Charleston from Klamath, CA, the site of last week's episode. We liked what we saw, and will surely return some day to get a more in-depth look at that area.
We are headed to the Oregon Coast later in August for the first time and we sooo appreciate all your insights and tips. I believe we will be heading south as you go north if I'm guessing correctly. Thanks for another great episode!
Thanks Thomas! This episode was our last day out on the 'yak for a few weeks. Paddling wasn't on our agenda for our five days in Newport, site of next week's video, and while we had planned to kayak Sand Lake in the following episode, the weather had other ideas.
@@GrandAdventure yes been an ocean trekker and there are great, good, OK and bad days to be out on a kayak/SUP/surfboard Winds and current can make or break an outing on the water. In the southern Oregon/northern California coast what do you enjoy or see when out on the ocean, bay or river?
Oregon has the best beaches on the West Coast. They are not crowded either. We’ve been here a few times. I applied for job with Sause Brothers Ocean Towing there in Coos Bay. Sorry we missed the Marine Biology Center; that looked really cool. Tide Tables? 😉 Thanks for sharing. Ram 👍🏼👍🏾
YOU SHOULD HAVE TIMED YOUR TRIP WITH THE TIDE, ALSO RIDING IT BACK OUT LATER. CHECK YOUR FORECAST, MAYBE FINISH SHOOTING THIS VIDEO AGAIN SOON. I LIVE IN COOS BAY, THAT WATERWAY LEAVES SO MUCH MORE TO BE DISCOVERED.
Oh we did, Mike. As former sailors we checked the tides, knew what we were getting into and knew that the tides would be working against us. Unfortunately that Saturday was the only day we had to attempt the paddle of the estuary, so we launched our boats anyway. What we hadn't counted on was the strength of the wind that was working in concert with the tides, which made it unmanageable. Next time we will hopefully get all the way to Hinch Bridge.
What a beautiful hike! My brother's have spent time there but I haven't.. yet. One brother used to ride the doors a lot. And the fresh clay chowder must be delicious!!
The chowder at Monkey Business in Charleston was excellent! They deserve the kudos they have received. And best of all, it was a 3-minute walk from our campsite.
Terrific review of the area Marc. If you recall, we we were just up the coast from you in Winchester Bay at the time. Looking forward to your videos on your northward journey as we continue southward along the coast. Thank you for your videos…and safe travels.
@GrandAdventure Kayak plans next week?? You need to try Beaver Creek (access across from Brian Booth State Park) - amazing views where we have seen eagle, blue heron, and more. It's a wonderful paddle that doesn't depend on the tides.
@@bbushman4fitness no kayaking in next week's episode as we were only there for 5 days, and it was during the work week so we spent our free time filming other things. However, in real time we are now up in Washington State.
Hi Marc! Loved your video this week, as always. Beautiful camp spot in the Marina, I like seeing all the boats coming and going. Love the Pacific coast with the rocky beaches and drift wood more so than sand. Fun seeing the sea animals and the museum. Fabulous flower garden, could spend hours in even a small one. Wonderful kayaking but sure looked like work and a bit dangerous getting back to shore. Thanks for the fine work you do. Have a wonderful week!
I can't believe you went to Coors Bay 😂. It's the one place on the Oregon Coast that has no coast or beach I should say. I hope you went to Yeong's while you were there to eat. Bandon is great, but you forgot to mention Bandon Dunes golf resort that is on of the best on the west coast. My profile picture is from a stump that we found while hiking at Shore Acres. We were just north of Newport and the wind was terrible but when it is close to 100 in the valley everyone heads to the coast to cool down. On your way North make sure you stop at Kylo's in Lincoln City. Thanks for another great video.
So much to respond to! - Au contraire! Bastendorff Beach is a massive, wide, sandy beach only a mile from the marina we stayed at on Coos Bay in Charleston. Only a bit further, Sunset Bay also has a beautiful, sandy swimming beach in a small cove. - "Golf" is for me a four-letter word. 😉 - Cool profile photo! - Next week's episode is from Newport, actually. - We also visited the Sand Lake area along northern Oregon's coastline for our episode in two weeks, but right now we're already up near Olympia, WA.
@GrandAdventure thanks for your reply. I agree with your assessment of golf. It's not for me, but for those that do like it, Bandon Dunes is a special place. Charleston is a nice area with great deap see fishing. As far as in beaches, I was referring to the city of Coos Bay, not the bay itself. Keep up the great work!
@@randomkadrmas2630 noted, and thanks again! I figured you might have been referring to the city, whereas our mindset in naming this episode was about the geographical feature rather than the city.
Yes but now you have to reserve a time and date and buy tickets and pay for parking in advance online. No more spontaneous trips to the Shore Acres Christmas Lights. 😢
Not to correct you, but it's actually a harbor seal. We encountered several at our campground. Zoe was certainly curious, but that was the extent of it.
@@GrandAdventure Great! I'll give you my seal of approval. I'll have him delivered as soon as possible. When you hear him clapping outside your door, you will know he has arrived safe and sound. He doesn't fetch very well but he loves paddle ball. Enjoy!!!👀🦭🤔👏 Gord
Yes there are, Marv. Also, if you're confident in your ability to not get stuck you can also tow your camper to one of a number of dispersed campsites actually on the dunes in Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. We did that ourselves back in 2016 with a Tacoma, sleeping in the bed with a shell. Finally, be sure to check out our episode 316 "Oregon's Three Capes" that will Premiere on July 19, when we'll actually bring you out onto the dunes where many, many folks are camped right on the dunes at Sand Lake Recreation Area. There the rideable dunes reach right down to the Pacific Ocean waves.
Nice video, some of the shots are too long, great information, I would like some information on how you stay in a RV park like that, what is your setup? Too bad you missed the famous Coos Bay oyster farm ..
Thanks for the feedback, Jen. Missing some things here and there is almost intentional, for it always provides a reason to return. As for our setup, I'm not sure what you're asking? The usual water hose/power cord/surge protector with EPO/sewer hose. We use a three-stage filtration system on our water, and a water softener. Most of these items have earned a dedicated video in our catalog.
Would have loved to have met you, Ross! We rolled through Lincoln City back on June 30 en route from Newport, next week's episode, to Sand Lake, the following week's video. Now, however, we're up near Olympia, WA.
Great episode, Marc. Loved that area. I was interested to hear more about some of the sea animals on static display. Some of them looked prehistoric. Would that be correct? It looked like the RV parking had no services or hookups. Did they have a dump station? Gord
@@GrandAdventure Thanks Marc. The thing I noticed on the skeletons was that some had huge teeth like dinosaurs. That is not typical of whales except Orca killer whales. Glad to hear they had full hookups. Around $29 per night for a week's stay is very reasonable imo. Gord
