"not the best looking stump" 4:50 well... It's very bad. You can actually count all mistakes on it and uncompleted undercut and unnecessary bark cuts... No wonder that this tree didn't like you and made some damage. Hopefully lesson learned. Stay safe and learn from pro loggers! Most famous probably is Buckin' Billy Ray. He has great experience and easy to watch and understand videos.
Never be too proud to turn the saw off, walk to the other side. Take a step back. Smoke a cigarette. Consider your options. With a idling saw it is extremely tempting to just bite a little more out of the hinge. Trees might look like they are straight or 'definitely' lean a certain way. Not always the case - might also be bound up by a tiny branch. You walked away, most important thing.

If I had a dollar for every time i've fucked up, i'd have that cs620pw already. You are a humble man. Thanks for leaving the comments on. Looks like most everyone is overwhelmingly positive... and rightfully so. The only ones who will break that trend are either arrogant as hell, or are lying and saying they have never misread a tree or made a less than perfect stump. I barberchaired a tree under tension a few months ago so far up It's already split for firewood. It was too skinny to plunge cut (looong tall skinny boy) All because I was too lazy to walk back for a ratchet strap. I've missed my lay. I've hung em up and made the situation even more dangerous. My ONE piece of advice: and I hope you don't get mad for me saying it. Other than the saw, wedges, ropes, banger, etc, that I need to cut a tree, everything is out of a 360' tree-length circle. It makes for a lot more walking but walking is good for the soul. Just glad you and your family are okay dude.
I was a lineman for 17yrs but mainly only did trimming of trees along power lines. I've fell a couple trees in the past. So this spring when I decided to remove a few near my house to open up the canopy for a garden, first I put one into my two story deck which I had just put a custom railing on last year and two, I miraculously put two trees into the crotch of another. One I was able to winch out. The other was stuck because of branches on the top of the crotch. So I started trimming the bottom and it ended up tipping up and now the 50ft of tree is balanced perfectly in the crotch of the other tree for everyone to see. I call it the 8th wonder of the world. Gotta laugh sometimes when you F-up. I learned I need to do some more research which is why I'm here watching your videos. Thanks!
Oh man! Thanks for sharing that! People are afraid of showing their mistakes and like to pretend they haven't f'd up before. Hogwash. We've all done it, or will do it. Best we can hope for is that we don't get hurt and we get a good story out of it. You got a great story!
This is so late you’ll probably never read this but supposedly comments help the channel so here’s a couple of observations. 1. Stumpy looks way more awesome like that! lol 2. By now you know everything that went wrong so nothing really to say except good job on posting this. People learn more from mistakes. 3. If you do see this and it hasn’t been mentioned before, maybe rethink jerking on a tow chain like that. Chain is strong with a static load but horrible when the load is dynamic like jerking on it. To be honest that’s likely when you were in the most danger of serious injury. A link snaps and they will and that chain recoils back right at you. Just last week a guy was killed here trying to jerk out his buddies 4x4 and the chain snapped, went through the windshield and killed the driver. Cable is way better but still not ideal but please, never jerk on a chain. You can actually snap a chain with a cheater bar by hand. That’s how we used to cut chain to length making skidded grader tire chains. Anyway, love your channel and none of us are to old to learn 👍🏼

I still watch this video at times when I feel low. Never fails to cheer me up knowing I've never cut my holding wood and crushed a side-by-side and nearly killing myself.
“It hurts”. Yes sir I believe you when you said that - we have all been the victim of our own poor choices and actions - learning is a life long ordeal and sometimes it bites you and “it hurts” . Be careful - take your time - think through things before you do them and don’t quit learning 👍

Mistakes happen to us all. Some just keep it hush hush, and some don’t walk away. It’s good the saws and side X side survived as well. It just happens so fast, with the video and Helpful comments, hopefully we can all walk away with a bit more knowledge and know how for the next one. This is a eye opening experience for sure and bad as it is, it turned out the best it could have gone.

This is something that would happen to me. Last tree I cut a few years ago, straight backwards across a power line, yanked it clean out of the house. Luckily was just a new crimp and it was back up. that side by side is over loaded for sure lol. the important thing is no one was hurt, we all make mistakes and as long as we learn from them they were worth making. A good rule of thumb is to notch 30 percent of the diameter of the tree and leave 10 percent of the diameter for the hinge. When cutting the notch cut it at 60 to 70 degrees by doing this the tree will be 2/3rds of the way to the ground before the notch closes and the hinge breaks if you only put a 30 degree notch in it will close and break the hinge 1/3rd of the way down and there is no control over where it is going after the hinge breaks. Im not trying to be a know it all because because I not trust me, I hope the info I gave will help keep someone safe when felling is all, think of the hinge as a steering wheel hang on to it and control it for as long as you can, THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Here's a little tip for the next time you gotta pull something heavy with your little tractor, get the biggest heaping scoop of dirt you can in your bucket first to help weigh the front end down and keep those front wheels getting traction. No matter if your new at it or have been cutting 50 year crap happens that is unseen loggers get hurt everyday in the woods main thing everyone walked out ok and you will always have a key board warrior wanting to point out everyones mistakes and 9/10 they dont have a channel putting there self out there like we do
Good job leaving this video up for others to learn from. I'm always worried about trees going the wrong way as i'm on a mountaintop and it's often very windy. Looks like there was hardly any wedge cut and you cut almost all the way thru the back leaving no hinge ? Tree could even slip right off the stump onto your legs or into your chest. Felling a tree is like opening a hardcover book...leave the last 1 inch or so for a tree that size, then the tree has almost not chance of going any other direction except toward or away from the wedge or back cut, just like opening and closing a book. Unless dead, rot or oddball circumstance, it can only fall 2 ways. Also, a loaded, downed tree is often far more dangerous then a standing one. It can launch back at you and kill you, i was nervous watching you cut the middle across the side by side because it was heavily loaded above you and below could have been loaded by the limbs. Watch some more vids on tree felling hazards, learn by others mistakes. I made some of these mistakes myself and been narrowly lucky. Don't wana see you learn the hard way ! You're brave leaving the video up and comments on. It may help someone else out.
Man i really feel bad for you! I had a cherry tree do that to me and i learned alot that day. I also know how bad it hurts our pride and ego. Truly thankful that y'all are ok. The tractor pulling had the wife and i as nervous as any of it. Thanks for the humility to show it all and be careful man.
That is really unfortunate, glad you are both safe. Have you ever thought of building a wheel arch attachment for your tractor? Then you can lift more of the weight of the ground. Anyone who has fallen for any length of time will go through situations like this. Usually after you get too comfortable. You now have more experience under your belt. Good learning experience for you, heck even for me. Looks like there's minimal holding wood. Need a 2" block between face cut and back cut, something I even screw up sometimes. I wonder if the non-horizontal cut back cut also played a tiny role in it.

So… in rewatching the video… in the face cut you have a big Dutchmen your bottom cut extends back past where your top cut comes down and that’s completely killed the front line of your hinge… so when you came around you cut too far and took out that hinge holding wood…. When you stopped and looked up you were all cut up… wanted to stop there and start beating on your wedges until you lifted it up and over the tipping point… remember that you want to smack your wedge and watch your top… the vibration needs to travel all the way up and move it… you have the tractor… might want to find a piece of steel cable and a good metal block so that you can grab a close tree base and redirect with the tractor… let mama release the clutch in low to get that pulling weight on your tree… or grab it with a 3 ton come-a-long so that you can yank your weight over the tipping point… ??? I just love…agha the lights still work…poor little thing! She’s so sweet! I’m just glad that you’re both safe buddy! We all love ya!!! Anyone who bust your balls doesn’t know you or have a clue and can kiss your azz!!! Accidents happen!!! That’s why they are accidents!!! The day we stop learning and thinking that we know all there is about something that’s the day we’re a dumbazz. Think about all the weight in each of those 6 pieces there… because it’s green wood… and that’s what you are needing to lift with those wedges to get it up over the tipping point… or over center… that’s why I’m always pulling up a line into my canopy so I can have a second function or action working in tandem with my wedges… or the truck or tractor so I can grab that weight up higher and move it over closer to center or the tipping point…. You did everything that you could after it went left…you got your butt way clear!!! That’s all you can do… then you take care of the cleanup and log the experience… one day this experience today will probably help save your life or someone else’s…. All good…my little woody is just fine!!!! LMFFAO!!! That’s a fantastic name!!! … be freakin hilarious to haul the whack off saw’s in a buggy called the or my little woody !!! Go grab my little woody… there’s some log jammin’ to be done!!! Ahahaaa!!!! Jam on it!!! Jam on it!!! 😂😂😂😂
That’s a great saw!!! The bar didn’t even get bent…that’s a great saw!!! Find a big bolder or make a wood box and fill it with concrete…500lbs so you can chain it in your bucket and get your nose down and increase your traction…. Gotta remember that you are working with a big hunk of live, green wood there!!! That’s several thousand pounds of dead weight there… when you are getting ready to take a tree plug it into your calculator and get an idea of the weight involved with that particular stick… that’ll help you make smart decisions…. Like these three wedges need to lift 6000 pounds and get it over the tipping point I’ve made when I created my face cut… I’ll make a back cut and beat that sucker straight up or tipping forward before I take my face and make the front side of my hinge… I had one do that and it wasn’t a UTV it was the second story of my clients house… talk about yelling O-no! O-no!!! After that I never dropped another without a safety rope and my wedges on my belt… dropping trees in the State park people have walked into the drop zone with their dogs and your 3/4 threw your cut and you start smacking wedges to stop it from falling and yelling your head off!!! Gotta remember that we are dealing with tons of weight and using little plastic wedges to lift that weight… a 28” wet pine tree isn’t a west coast cedar or deadora…it’s wet and heavy… then the oaks and other hardwoods when alive and heavy hunks of wood… having a 5 to 1 or a good rope puller set up let’s you grab your top and shift some of your weight…
Initial response is, “could be worse”. Watching Buckin Fall trees taught me to know where my holding wood is. Turns out that tree was more of a wedge banger than ya thought. Buckin always talks about it thrown over your shoulder if ya cut up all your holding wood. Ya just needed about an inch more holding wood on that far side and some banging would been fine. I haven’t had that happen to me but plenty of other grace opportunities in my life. Lesson learned. Thanks for sharing, and just being a real dude through it.
I did on a fat maple that had a hard lean to it but my mistake was I didn't make a big enough notch cut my other mistake was i pounded my metal wedges in back all the way didn't leave enough room to keep cutting so the poor notch i gave it ruined the tip of my bar and that was my fuck up Cause you can't count on the professionals they don't always come out to give the trees a look over specially when you tell them you don't have the money yet they still could have came to look but that's how the real professionals do i wasted days waiting on them so all i done was make a small mistake and ruined my bar
I had a 120 ft lodge pole pine go over my shoulder a few years ago. I snipped the corner thinking I was cool and paid the price.We all start somewhere and have to learn form our mistakes. At least everyone was safe.
Wow! Glad you made it out of the way. Looks like the saw survived a tree going over it too, so thats something. Your poor side by side got the evenge of the tree though.

Glad the only injury was to your pride. I dropped the last 8 feet of a larch across the hood of my truck a couple years ago. Not too much damage but I left the hood as is for a reminder and a good story when people ask what happened to it. Great video and editing!
I was cutting trees for my dad years ago, there was one I wasn't sure of, my uncle said it would go one way my dad said it would go the other, my dad was right. Its a learning curve.

A tree that size and a tractor that small requires most likely no more than 9 feet in length to haul decently. I leaned that my grapple won't even handle that much the hard way. One just needs to cut it down to length or mill it in the field where it lies with a chainsaw mill.

I've had trees do that to me brother, and I do love a good shit show lol! Good times dude. These are the things we look back on and remember and laugh like he'll. Not the things that turned out to be perfect or almost flawless. you and Irene keep up the good work! Also you gotta make it so stubby can at least haul a couple of chainsaws, lol.
Thanks for sharing! You did some things right when the felling started going the wrong way. You ran and left the saw. I would like to suggest that you avoid anchoring a long chain high to your 3 point. It picks the front wheels up as you experienced, but I also watched once as my friend's chain broke free from the tree we were pulling and almost flew to the back of his head.
I like this channel, but I see no part of this fall which indicates any sort of felling plan. The high speed, advance footage at the beginning is the first clue that all will not end well, as the succession of seemingly random cuts basically almost guarantee a disaster. You’re working on ground with a near 25-30 degree lie, yet, your face cut wants to bring it far against the lie, which is where the tree will naturally try to fall. The video doesn’t seem to show the crown either. Was there more weight of crown on the back cut side? This job called for a felling plan, proper use of many wedges in order to resist the tree’s natural tendency to fall along the lie and fewer, multiple cuts. I thought I saw multiple face and back cuts with Dutchmen galore. This tree basically sat back and rolled against the direction of the face cut. My guess is that his hinge had been eaten away too much on one side causing the tree to sit back and roll on its trunk as the uneven hinge twisted the upper trunk. Probably an uneven hinge. I think reference to Jepson’s bible “To Fell a Tree” would have been a good place to start. I DO credit the faller for having the guts to broadcast his minor disaster. I have had my share of my own. Nobody’s perfect, but didn’t you the viewer see this coming when all of those multiple random cuts were made at the beginning? I would’ve also recommended a Maasdam rope system here too. Glad nobody was killed, except that Jonsered.
Not sure if it will help or not but maybe you can cut one of those log to fit your front bucket and strap it into place for additional weight up front? Im liking your videos!
You cut your high side holding wood. Oh well leson learned nobody got hurt that's all that matters, pride heals and equipment is fixable. Anyone that has spent any time in the woods has done what you did it happens to all of us.
