It was the day of cyclone in South India and I was 14. No television at home. I stood outside a BPL showroom and watched half the game and towards the night when cyclone began, I somehow managed to get into a small electric shop who had generator to watch the entire match. By the time match got over it was 1:00 in the night and at the age of 14, I walked all the way home in cyclone by myself. I was so innocent, I picked up some coconuts from the fallen trees on road and went home. I can never forget how worried my parents were sitting and crying and when I reached home, bang my ass was canned 😂 such was and is the love for 🏏 cricket. I really miss those wonderful days of 90's life at it's best. Organic food, milk and water and whole town knows each other and you would have friends in every gully.
The day 6th November, 1996. I was forty and back from office in pitch dark in the pouring rain and our entire town Kakinada was inundated and without power. Myself just managed through a radio commentary and enjoyed the victory through radio waves. It was a big storm and huge damage to Konaseema Revenue Division of East Godavari District of erstwhile combined Andhra Pradesh . A memorable day.
I was n indrapalem(kakinda) , yes it was a very heavy storm. No power n the night. I thought india will loss the match and very thrilled to see india victory in the morning newspapers.
Wow.. South African fielding was top class..matching even today's standards.. Sachin on the other hand was more attractive stroke player than any of the current players.. Truly a master!
that extra joy after dismissing tendulkar says it all. scoring 300 plus runs in 6 matches at an average of 60 plus against the best australian and south african attack ever...
Was only 8 at that time. Watched the entire match. Sachin was amazing those days. Azhar and Dravid scored half centuries against Australia to qualify for finals. Good old days.. so passionately followed cricket at that time.. nostalgic..
During 90s, whole cricket era was iconic. Indian Cricketers used to be a lot bigger entities than Movie Stars. They had the ability to keep the whole nation engaged.
In those days ...I was working in a BPL tv showroom .It was very easy to watch all the games of Titan cup .The final match was on Diwali 96.That was an impossible looking to defend 220 in the final ....as SA have got all 12 points winning all league matches. We all showroom staffs enjoyed so much on that day specially wickets fallings of SA .Now I'm in police and have a good salary ,but the days were golden memories....
I was 16 years old Nov 6 1996 ...I watched only India battling then powerful cyclone hit our are (Andhra Pradesh India) no electricity 1000 people dead all houses collapsed I never ever forget this match & this day(November 6-1996).
Team score was 66 sachin was to reach his fifty amazing seriously !!! HE won this trophy which was remembered !!! RSA gave tough fight back nice game by Jadeja , Dravid !!!!awesome !!!
One of the great tournaments 90s , like hero 1993 and titan cup 1996 ,Sahara cup 1997 , independence cup dhaka 1998, and vb series 1997, coca cola cup sharjah 1999.
Because of his splendid knock of 212 in an innings and some more valuable knocks, we could draw all four tests against the then very mighty and fierce Pak, playing on their pitches. Sachin was a debutant and some other were inexperienced too, during our tour to Pak in 1989. Akram was at his high and was known for bowling 6 balls in 6 different ways. Sanjay showed much tenacity and patience in that entire series and even after. He was our wall before Rahul. But, yes, he was not a speedy run getter like some emerged post that period. We didn't have many options that time, for onedays.
Sunil Prabhu what a joke. He was technically the most superior batsman India had produced. Even Dravid had acknowledged that Manjarekar was technically better than him.
He has never ever done anything to make him proud never even heard of his name in any spotting for country. Waste fellow . This nayan mongia was also a waste who has held up place which could have been utilised by someone more competent.
Sachin paaji, Is the only captain in world cricket who played as ONE MAN ARMY .. even entire his career is like that only. Except last 5 to 6 years of his career...
I was 16 years old by then. The feeling of winning the titan cup was like winning the World Cup that time. Lol. Because India always used to lose matches against stronger teams like Australia, South Africa , Pakistan and west indies that time .
I couldn't watch SA batting. There was a storm that night. After waking up next day my neighbour told me that india won the match. I couldn't believe becoz in earlier matches india lost to SA.
I watched this match live. So many memorable incident happened throughout this Titan Cup. As a Captain Sachin Tendulkar won first Tri Nation tournament, Robin Singh debuted tournament, World's all time best Opening Pair Sachin & Sourav started their journey. Sachin & Sourav
The reason many Indians are writing about what they used to do those days is because those were our golden days and really every match was a festival for us and Sachin our God !!!
Since we didn't know that in future we are going to get middle order batsmen like Yuvraj, Dhoni, etc ...So at that time Ajay Jadeja was the best middle order batsman India had...he played many crucial innings for India and he could have easily finished his career with more than 10k ODI runs. Match fixing scandal has ruined his career badly.
Yeh true from 2000-2006 we never chased vs Aussies due to poor lower middle order and had many disappointment games vs Aussies as we missed Jadeja he was a very strong player vs Aussies !!!! Imo he had a future in odis till 2004 !!!! If not for that match fixing scandal!!!! I would have picked him Ahead of Sanjay Bangar!!!!
Am 16 years old, Nov6-1996 a dangerious cyclone hit our costal Andhra area.. Am unable to watch this match no electricity all homes collapsed.. Never Ever forgot this this match
Robin Singh and Manjrekar hogged nearly 55balls nearly 10 overs to score 12 crucial runs.. N Manjrekar comments on batsman performance these days. Ironic isn't
@@justinethomas3993 This match was in India. Conaidering the previous between India and Aus in the Titan cup where both teams scored nearly 300 runs, 221 is not a big deal. Austaralia nearly chased 290 runs in Mohali. But India went for a Spin Pitch and they knew that South Africa is one of the worst teams against Spin. Masses those days never understood cricket. In one match India struggle to defend 290 and in the next math even 220 was a big deal. This actually made interesting for them. They used to wonder how India did that so easily! Those days cricket was like Magic. But today people knew everything. They dont see any magic in the sport.
Kumble was a joke of a fielder. But every time someone else fielded badly while he was bowling he'd give a disgusted look as if he himself is Jonty Rhodes uncle.
The way Cronje got out says it all... I think he was doing it for a long time. Imagine Saf had beaten India and Aus in all the 6 league matches. And they lose just the final with such a low score of 220 run... Can't digest it
I watched this match live on my food old BPL TV im those days... 90s the golden childhood.... And in those days 3 lakh was enough for the entire team..... Wow... Today....even the match fees per player is higher than this.....😂🤣
Prize money for winners. 3 Lakhs. With inflation, it wud be 24lakhs today. But today, teams are awarded in crores - shows the kind of growth cricket has seen.
Shrinath at one down....😜🤗😇 I was very excited that time, thought he was going to deal in sixes only, unfortunately it didn't worked well for team India
After losing league matches against South Africa, the final became a War 2 the Indians, I was in standard VIII, with heart in the hands watched the match, tension was tremendously grabbed us, Kumble was the man of the match in the final, it was playing in Andhra as much as I remember now
Jadega was a fine lower order batsman that time.. but ruined his own career in match fixing.. and he might be a another all time great player in one day cricket..
@@Sam85080 he had all credits to become a future captain too excellent middle order batsman if u see india from 2001- 2006 had poor show by middle order until it got strengthened !!! If Jadeja was there we would have been a fine team :)
@@nsundu123 correct. If you remember just prior to the 99WC , there was a series in sharjah vs Eng where Jadeja was the captain instead of Azhar Jadeja rocked there, People wanted Jadeja to continue as captain in the 99wc too.
I was 9 years old watching the final at neighbour's fearing they would ask to go home anytime. But fortunately they didn't and I could enjoy such a great match. Those were really fascinating days of cricket.
Jo ek bar time nikal jata hai wo wapas nahi aata hai i miss those days ..the golden era of cricket ..or today No sachin sahwag ganguli jadeja ...aaj toh maja hi nahi aata hai cricket dekhne mein
@@azeezabdul2930 Jyada hone se to hai hi. More importantly, playing rules and conditions are not balanced. Equal opportunity should be given to bastmen and bowlers, to make a match interesting. A match that goes down to the last ball and still you are not sure who will win. When was the last time we saw close catching positions in an ODI like in this match. Earlier we did have seasons. No match was played in summers. You saw swing, reverse swing, spin. Now nothing. It is all plain hitting sixes and fours. That makes it boring. All of a sudden, if there is a pitch that offers all of these, current batsmen fall like pack of cards. You see this often in test matches on supportive pitches, where the modern day greats fail like anything. We haven't won a big tournament since last 7 years, that involved world's best teams like Aus, SA, ENG etc. What's the point of being number 1, when we can't do that. I would rather want something like the old Indian team which used to win important tournaments in spite of being much low ranked team, something which AUS does well today.
I remember leaving the match when india were 2 down ans we have to go to aunts place.. I waa concerned.. I was jst 6..dad used to say are sachin hai no worries.. He has to score more than 50..and then later that's night.. Power problem was there.. I stayed back in aunts place jat to watch this march qki un log ke paas generator tha.. Cricket ke liye paagalpanti.. Papa akele ghar aaye heheheh.. Agle din mummy ne bohut daata yar. Cronje se badha darr lag rha tha.. Qki wo itna cool captain tha yaar.. But we emerged champs
Sanjay Manjrekar was dropped and was never part of this series. But in entire tri series no opener gave good support to Sachin. So Sachin called Sanjay to open the innings who didn't even have match practice. Sachin had told him that you just be there, I will make the runs . Don't throw your wicket. So Sanjay played Fannie devilliers first two overs without scoring a run. Note that there is no name at the back of Manjrekar s Jersey.
I was 11 years old and i was in the hostel, our seniors took permission to watch the final. Almost 100 People watched the match together ❤, 90’s kids were lucky
Robin Singh and Ajay Jadeja are both excellent batsmen at the lower middle order...After Dhoni again that place is hampering now india to win crucial matches n set 10-15 runs extra
oh ok, now i get it! what? why tendulkar missed so many centuries: --back in the days main problem was only one ball was used -- the bats were still not that heavy --so once tendulkar got to his 50(70) balls, it was not easy to accelerate with that muddy ball which is already 30 years old. This was the final he played with caution to ensure proper start after loss of early wickets! srinath coming inn at one down tells the state of indian batting line up! --you can see here, he played uppishly--barely--to accelerate unlike today where they can hoik the ball over the head with these cudjels--gadha bats!( virat and rahul do all the time and in t-20's too). ----so back in the days it was not easy to accelerate. he picked up only the guy on the off and cronje picked it inches from the ground! ----And low bounce indian pitches did not help this cause. Otherwise tendulkar would have surely got at least 50% of those 99, 50's in to centuries! Another research success in my book!
If I am not wrong alan Donald was man of the series aur ek badha titan ke watch ka set mila tha usko.. Mujhe gussa aarha tha ki sachin ko kyu nahi mila.. Pura ek din papa ka dimaag khaya yaar..6 saal ka dimaag hehehe.. Papa bhi last me bole ha galti hui un logo se heheheheh
4 opening pair with Sachin in this entire series..ufff too much experiments. Only ganguly succeeded to make useful partnership with Sachin. I was only 9 year boy during this final. I Had No clues n ideas about cricket only wanted to see Sachin's batting. Earlier in this series India were all out for 185 later Taken sweet revenge against SA in the final by bowling out them for 185 again. Nostalgic memory 😍😍
He was An Excellent player he could open games too he would have been future captain wasted precious time of his career due to fixing !!!! He was a GOod fielder too !!!! Indians Used to struggle Aainst teams due to poor Middle order and we used to have 7 Batsman stratergy which made us fail in several games due to poor bowlers !!!
Sanjay Manjrekar--never played one match winning knock in his entire career and yet he comments on the likes of Jadeja.....I guess product of Nepotism cricket
I was 14 that time & winning against mighty southafricans was like winning a lottery ticket. They were really ruthless & dangerous side that time. Even the 3rd team australia were treated like minnows in this titan cup. This southafrican had never say die spirit. That time the 8th down & 9th down would come & win them matches. Such were these springbrooks under LATE HANSIE CRONJE.
7:04 why Robin singh returns to his crease so slowly like a dead zombie, despite seeing the ball is with the best fielder God in the world- Johnty Rhodes?!?! And 8:15- that is one hell of a life given to Jadeja!
@@kundanmishra6438 Sachin wasn't a Bad captain sadly team. Never supported him we won first odi in West Indies after 1983 and almost came to a win in RSA and West Indies sad bad luck :(
