Film me zyada maar pit hona accha hai… or not?
Tackling this “lighthearted” issue, we have writer and director Vikramaditya Motwane (Sacred Games, Udaan, Lootera) - here to talk about his thoughts on masculinity, violence in films and what it means for him to include (or not include) scenes of violence in his films.
Check out the first episode of ‘Fursat Mein Serious Baatein with Varun Grover’, presented by ‪@breakthroughtv‬ and made in collaboration with Varun Grover.

Naaaaai, we cant have VARUN GROVER interviewing someone like VM and have it not be a 3 hour conversation about writing and cinema and just one specific topic 😢 😢

As this episode talks about depiction of violence on screen, one movie which strikes a chord with me is Aparna Sen's Mr. & Mrs. Iyer. Though no blood is shown on screen but the violence and the impact is chilling. Brilliant portrayal and what a cinematic impact. And I do often feel maybe the lens through which we portray or depict violence definitely change when it is from a woman's pov than man.

'Writing a gender neutral character...' was such a beautiful and unexpected question. Despite not talking much about techniques rather on creation of characters and driving force in movies made this episode so special.

Great insightful conversation 😊 Never realized the part about the difference in writing vs actual portrayal of violence till it was highlighted. Tropes are definitely influenced and developed by what people watch and they lead to more commercialization of those tropes. It is a vicious circle.

On suggestion pointer ...I have as a creator myself .. for example you invited Vikram Motwani...so while he was telling about certain scenes , if you would have shown small clips of the scenes themself, then it would have been more concrete.. not only to us but to him also so that he cud spk after liking at those scenes

Terrific discussion. Vikram is brutally honest and perhaps too self critical. I think Bhavesh Joshi is an underrated masterpiece that should have multiple sequels. I’m sure a female character would have been very interesting but the film holds well in its formation too. Wish it had been a bigger success!

So much wanted to see a show with you as the host, and have discussions on Cinema, Stories & Politics / Ideologies around the stories with some of the best people from the Hindi / Regional / World Cinema. I am glad this is happening now and the first guest itself is one of my favourite filmmakers Vikramaditya Motwane sir. Have been a huge admirer of his work since Udaan had released in 2010, still remember seeing Inception and Udaan on the same day and to this day it has been the most memorable double feature visit to the cinema. Didn't want this conversation to end so soon, and would have loved to listen to a deeper conversation around the important subjects raised during this conversation...Looking forward to many more of such interesting serious baatein, fursat mei kri hui.

Varun bhaiya episode Acha tha aur kaafi interesting concept hai. Bus ek feedback tha when you restrict the conversation to just one topic, it sometimes becomes a little repetitive and the retention rate would decrease (unless it’s a big celeb or a controversial opinion). Baaki aapka kaam toh hamesha dekhenge

The acceptance of violence and non acceptance of affection is very deep rooted. We grow up learning it from our parents… if ok for dad to hit mom or yell at her in front of kids but its a big taboo to show any kind of affection.

Some of the best takeaways came from the last 5 mins of the episode. That was absolute gold! Even though, I personally was not very convinced with the violence debate, but sure enjoyed the discussion about gender discrimination. Major topic which I felt was missing in this was about Gender Pay Disparity. But chalo sahi hai, great 1st podcast. And, it's a pet peeve, you say "Whatever" quite a lot, Varun. 🙈 Cheers!

Thanks a lot for starting a series with these amazing filmmakers and storytellers. It's really insightful, how an element in film is designed and what impact it can have, what is the actually intention of the filmmaker in portraying it the way they do. Does anyone else remember the OTHER version of Sholay in which Thakur kills Gabbar by stomping on him with those keel waale chappals!?! I swear, THAT is the version I grew up watching & then suddenly, Sholay came on TV & the climax changed!!! For YEARS I told people about the chappal se maut scene & nobody believed me, but thankfully the internet happened & many others remember seeing that scene, too, but I think the Sippy’s had to change the end at some point. I’m not delusional. Hua tha. Maa kasam!!

Can we have a movie on psychology and understanding the human mind and emotions? Like the hyper masculinity and Dev das syndrome is all because boys are not encouraged to be in touch with their emotions by their fathers and society etc. so you can get into the victimhood or saviour mode rather than learning to handle your own emotions (your feminine)
