It's always a great delight to hear Alankrita Srivastava talk. So many gems and food for thought are just casually sprinkled across her conversations. Loved this!

Varun, what a refreshing view on Dangal and Pink. While both the movies were just outright fantastic, you are right the story became about victory of the Male protagonist. No wonder you are my most remarkable person list. From your stories to your comedy to Lyrics to Talks all are just so captivating.

Rituparno Ghosh's perspective and gaze with his cinema is a treat to watch. His female characters and the way he portrayed them showed a nuanced and empathetic depiction. Hindi Cinema can learn a lot from his range of films and how he subverted Patriarchal norms with an evolved male perspective. This discussion reminded me of Rituparno Ghosh alot

Since he might be in a constant tussle with himself and his sexuality in his growing up years. Hence , I think he empathised with women a lot , more than other filmmakers, but basically hetero men who have always stayed at a privileged pedestal than the oppressed ones, don't try to even place themselves in the deep shackles of patriarchy.

@@jyotirmoyghosh1720 The personal turmoil always play an integral part in Art for sure. The hyper masculinity is one of the biggest problems the man faces mostly in their own growth. Guess the balance is key..

I completely agree.. miss Ritu Da a lot these days..his story telling was outstanding.. the complexities each women deal on a day to day basis , he showed all of them perfectly be it bariwaali, Dahan, Unishe April,Raincoat,Dosor,Titli etc.. also his portrayal of transgender persons in later half of his career is truly remarkable.. filmmakers need to understand the complexities women and men with less masculinity face.. I would take another name who is very good with both.. Juhi Chaturvedi ( Vicky donor, Piku, October etc.).. Irrfan & Jishu both playing supporting role in Piku's life not trying to overshadow the father daughter relationship which is beautiful.. then comes October where I loved Varun's character, Empathetic, Sensitive,No male ego,Innocent, Caring...

Very beautiful and thoughtful. Depiction of women in Indian cinema was alwayd all white and black but directors like alankrita are adding more colours to women's character which is fascinating and a very bold step. Varun your choice of questions are also remarkable because it shows the perspective and thinking of the director.

Enjoyed the conversation. But I think Dangal can't be labelled as a male saviour film. It was a biopic on Mahavir Phogat. He is a father, trainer, motivator, inspiration for his daughters and protective of them by natural instinct.

13:00 I remember as a kid my parents particularly my mum asking me to switch channel when there's a rape scene... With all the innocence once I told my mum it's the heroine so she won't be raped.. Then it was so important for the heroine to be "pure" Now we see male leads being raped... We have come a long way... Thanks to the film maker like you guys...

I watched lipstick under my Burka , with a girlfriend in theatre in Singapore. Originally from Bhopal, I was so excited, nostalgic opening scene shot in DB city mall but I was not prepared for what's gonna hit me. It was a gem, I liked Bombay Begum too. More power to such people who bring out the voices from among us. Thanks to Varun for this piece.

Jaisa aadmi, vaise fans lol. Most his male 'worshippers' are oh so annoyed in the comments that the female guest is talking more than Lord Varun Bhaiyya, trying to give credit for HER ideas to him and his questions, some are bashing her films, others are asking for some male guest pweeez. Contrast that to the comments on Motwane videos. Even VG goes a lil ahem berserk on social media when cheering on men, mourning a famous man's demise, championing younger upcoming men, celebrating a man's heroic-ness or virtues. Women he talks about only trying to ~understand~ 🤔these creatures who make half the world(and he is 42 years old btw) or something banal about feminism to make sure all brownie points are secured and cashed at all chances, completely rejecting or scarily ignoring that this is also a person JUST LIKE myself and all these other men I feel love and respect for, whose future/career I care about on the same level as mine. I have never in my life seen fans who are 'unlike' the public figure they are fans of, so not surprised. Boomers who love Barjatya films where the woman is just worshipping a nincompoop parmeshvar and is just a figure of service are all so similar. Interesting.

Not a hater, but towards the end everything became repetitive and every question had just one answer to it over and over again with alot of “like” “you know” at certain point it’s like, ‘are kehna kya chahte ho’. One should tell their idea of what are they doing for change rather than being all generic about it. 🙄

She was talking in circles and had no clarity. It seems she has no idea about film making and is more interested in pushing her political agenda. I've only watched her Lipstick Under my Burkha, which was an okay film, a tad above mediocre. I just googled her filmography and don't anything great. I'm sorry, but I feel we could have had other creators with more passion for the art, because in the end, it's conversations about cinema and its effect on life.
