Loved the explanation about the father in Margherita with A Straw. I think its important to show all sides of people, regardless of their gender, class, religion or background. Especially ones which aren't highlighted as much on screen like the example of sensitive men. Our lives affect the kind of media that's created and our media affects the kind of lives we live, and for people who are mostly limited to a small number of people, geography and community, this new media can often be the only way of seeing more about the world and the various sorts of personalities living here.

The acceptance of violence and non acceptance of affection is very deep rooted. We grow up learning it from our parents… if ok for dad to hit mom or yell at her in front of kids but its a big taboo to show any kind of affection.

Varun it is so wonderful to see you again I am such a big fan of everything Varun. I keep looking for your stand up shows and must have watched all several times over . We need evolved people like you waking up the rest of the its so much more convenient to keep quiet crowd. Misogyny in India is at an all time high . Women are not even 2 nd class citizens and uf they are attractive independent and intelligent they are hated more by both genders. Hearing Shonali confirmed what we experience almost every single day. Please keep the wonderful work up , you have no idea how loved and respected you are and how much we look forward to everything Varun .

I would have added a few more questions to Shonali: 1. What a progressive man looks like in her cinematic world? 2. How can cinema be more inclusive as far as Hindi Film Industry is concerned? 3. How she keeps her detached while writing and directing the personal films she has made till now?
@cauliflowerhead2735
@cauliflowerhead2735 Год назад
Hindi cinema has to be more inclusive and takes more chances. But to be fair the South also has nepotism, in fact more than Hindi cinema.

When she said she was very raw with showing the violence of genocide and how anesthesized we are against it hit me hard. Cz we in india have completely stigmatized public displays of affection but completely normalised violence at every level of society.

I genuinely appreciate this show so much! It's high time we discuss the casual sexism in the industry. Be it the lyrics, the stories, the involvement of women behind the scenes there are so many problems that need to be addressed. Absolutely agree with Shonali ma'am her on pov regarding depiction of rape or extreme violence. Great questions as always!

Hi Varun - Thanks for stating this show. much needed one to especially bring writers and director, the actual parent of the story, to the fore front. Your theme has mostly been around violence and women depiction. I hope to cover more topics too, ranging from character motives and evolution etc. There were two questions you asked and I wanted to share my thoughts, not that you asked though 😂 1. Depiction of violence, do we really need to show it - I agree with Shonali that we might not - because the terror of it is not what I feel when I see a man on fire but actually makes more sense when it becomes what a child feel when she see her father on fire. The terror or beauty of a concept always gets materialised by their human experience. Of course that will mean we will need brilliant actor and directors but that would be an actual ode to the art of film making. For example refer to last 10 mins of "Potrait of a woman on fire" for context. 2. If there were woman who made earlier films things would have been different, I don't think so. There were people in 70s 80s 90s who were making sensitive and thought provoking work but we're termed as art films. It usually economics which drives the demand. If thinkers of a generation were given the center stage our stories would be very different. For context take Bengali Cinema and all the names Shonali talked about or Japanese Anime. Looking forward to your thoughts, if not that then great content. All the best!

Yes it's very comfortably accepted violence in public places rather loving ,hugging kissing each other even at home we don't change channel during a violent scene but in an intimate scene. Loving makes us so uncomfortable but violence doesn't n that is the reason people killed in broad daylight on very petty issue of roadrage as spectators didn't bothered to intervene at the sametime young couples enjoying their private space are harrased in the name of moral policing even if they are in a private closed room they are pulled out n paraded on camera...hence people like modi is ruling

Patriarchy and men's vested interest in making sure it stays intact.True across classes and surnames, wish they would call each other out instead of constantly performing their wokeness and really ask themselves if they would criticize/scrutinize/obsess over/have such a massive reaction to/vilify/shame this woman for xyz if she were a man I knew, would I EVEN bother to think about xyz and if they themselves or their friends have done xyz quite often themselves and never let it bog them down. Have they ever cared about the women's feelings who nurtured them and always cheered them on. Did they feel good or did they just become insecure jerks,cornered and bullied women who they felt 'needed humbling' in a hundred indirect ways just because they were good and dared to dream. Iss sab look I'm such a good sweet boy naatak ka kya fayda when you stay mum about the misogynists around you and the misogyny in yourself.

God knows where that book pulls it data from but around the world mostly men drive and died in car crashes. So is the case in heart attack. So it's market force which makes it default to be much talked about things and designed to serve it's larger customer base.
