I go over the total expenditures that were a result of our truck's transmission breaking down. Then I give my personal opinion on driving the Ram 2500 vs our Ford F150.

John I really appreciate how honest this was and it hurts me to see how much it took to get the truck repaired. I have 2 friends that love their Ford truck they replace them every 2-4 years due to engine and/or tranny issues and their loyalty keeps them buying again. I don’t understand it but they love their trucks. I work with the head engineer and he was telling me he bought the Chrysler K car when they were new. I respectfully told him that everyone knew they were a pile of junk, very unreliable Mitsubishi four-cylinder his response was “yes I knew that but they were so easy to work on when they broke down” That always puzzled me,why would you buy something you know is junk only because it’s easy to fix or work on

I agree, would rather have it not break down than have it easy to fix when it does...

The 10 speed trannies in the F150 and the Super Duties are very different. 10R140 in a Super Duty is almost 125 lbs beefier and handles almost twice as much torque input as the 10R80 in the F150. Your F150 was designed to occasionally pull your Airstream to the lake on weekends.

I can't believe Ford didn't offer some help with this situation. Your Transmission story has been seen by 1000s of people and I am sure this will affect their purchase decision when the time comes. I was a District/Regional Service Rep for a Truck Manufacture for over 50 years and we always tried to do the Right Thing in situations light this by offering some Policy Warranty! I am sure this will indirectly cost Ford in a big way.

Yeah, I was hoping for, especially since their first dealer ( ie ford rep as far as I'm concerned ) basically got us for $1800. But I guess its such a strong sellers market right now that they didnt feel the need.

John, long time, no see - hope all is ok and everyone is well. I had talked with you before about my Ford transmission and how we got it resolved. Since then, my mom passed away and on the way to her funeral my engine quit! It is the 7.3L Godzilla V8, we had 800 mile remaining on the warranty and Ford replaced the engine. They also paid for a replacement truck to tow our trailer to our destination and back home while our truck was being repaired. It took 21 days total to get it back. We are down in FL now traveling and visiting friends. Again, I hope everything is ok and we miss the videos. Brian & Brandelyne

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. And then to have your truck die on the way there... :( But at least to still have it just under warranty and have Ford absorb all those costs is great. I added up all the expenses related to our tranny needing to be rebuilt ( including having to rent an HD truck to two for 6 weeks while we waited for it to get fixed ) and I think it came to something like $11k. We're all doing well here in Reno / Tahoe. The kids are enjoying skiing and obviously looking forward to Santa visiting. No sure when we'll get back on the road again... some day...

Great comparison and as you said it comes down to personal preference. Do your research, buy the one you like and hope it last. The one expense that bothers me the most is the $150 to move your Airstream. I can't believe no one at the campground would help you out. Seems like the right thing to do to me. I would have hooked it up to my Jeep just to move it five spots over. Oh well at least you have it back and it's running properly.

@johnjessjourney2352 Год назад
Yeah that stuck in my craw too. But to be honest we had just gotten there and didnt know any of the other RVer's and I didn't want to put a stranger on the spot because I could understand if they wouldnt want me to drive their truck or if they wouldnt want to have the responsibility of backing up my airstream.

Thanks John ... this is great info. I have the same "unicorn" F150 (HD payload, max tow pkgs) as you, pulling a 27' FBQ Airstream. The truck works great for me, though I don't have the miles on it you do. Best of luck in the transition back into a house for the time being.

Sorry you've had such a time with it but interesting review of the 2 trucks. We have a 2021 F250 Diesel pulling a 27 ft Airstream. Absolutely love the F250 Diesel and no issues towing. We get roughly 14 mpg towing and around 19 otherwise. Everybody comments about how huge the backseat feels also. As an everyday vehicle I get what you're saying, the 250 feels huge but w/ the utilize the camera systems and parking is easy... although we do park away from people as much as possible, always. 😎

Very helpful info. Thx John. I lived in UT in that area. I don't want to throw anyone under the bus but if you were in Hebrew, UT, that must have been Labrum Ford. Sounds like someplace I won't be taking my F-150 to for service. In Park City, it used to be Crandall Ford (where I got my truck) and they were great. Now it's Karl Malone Ford. I have not dealt with them. Fun fact... turbos actually do better in higher altitudes. If/when you upgrade, it's my understanding that the hybrid F-150 is a beast when it comes to towing. And it can power the trailer when you don't have hook-ups. I'm in agreement that a 3/4 ton truck is a bit big for daily driver.

We found out, after the fact, that that heber city ford dealer doesnt really do transmissions. They dont have a specialist. Wish we knew that before going.

Just an fyi, the super duties run a different tranny than the 150’s. I think you said yours was a 19, I think you have a ten speed in that, my 19 F350 is still a 6 speed. They were very reliable and I was glad I bought it before the new 10 speed came out with the issues that were mentioned here already.

My Ford Trans failure experience. TV, 2013 Ford E150 XLT Premium. Still in warranty by time, but 67k Miles (7k miles beyond warranty). Ford dealer installed Factory ReMan Trans, New trans cooler and flushed lines. $3,800.00 total. I discovered Ford extended the warranty on 2011/2012 E150 trannys to 8 years/150k miles that covered the same failure that my tranny suffered. It took 2 years and a lot of B____tching but Ford finally cut me a check for $3,800.00. At one point I made up a big sign and sat out in front of the Ford dealer telling how Ford treated me. After I did that, I had my check within a week. Sometimes you just have to wear them out. I still have the van and it has not missed a shift with over 50k miles of towing 25' AS.

On the F250 and F350, there was a service bulletin on the transmissions (10 speed ones) - came out in April 2021 x- something related to a planetary gear bearing causing an issue - required a rebuild. Maybe there was a similar bulletin on yours? At least yours is now fixed and working properly.
@johnjessjourney2352

I did see a class action lawsuit realted to the 10 speed tranny. But that would probably mean I wait for 5 years and then maybe get a check for $10 :)

The Rams rear floor is flat from 2020 on and the rear passenger area is larger. The height will be based on tire size our new Ram dually sits lower than our SRW we just traded in and it was due to 17” wheels compared to 20” it’s pretty noticeable. All trucks have their positive and negatives. I love the Rams that I’ve had, but that’s just me.
@johnjessjourney2352
@johnjessjourney2352 Год назад
Oh, that's good to know regarding the rear floor. My parents have a Ram, it is a nice truck. To be honest all these trucks are great these days, compared to what they were like back in the 80's and 90's when I was driving my dad's construction pickup. They've come a long way.

Turbo motors are better at elevation not worse, fyi. So you’d actually be better off with them at altitude.

It was an expensive repair but hopefully you won't have the same issue forever. F250 would be a good option next time, but diesel would give whole lot of different experiences.

I've spent 22 years with a USA Truck Manufacture, another 25 yrs with an Off Shore Truck Manufacture, can verify that situations like your, is one of the primarily reasons that USA Manufacture, both Cars and Truck, (and probably most other products) are losing Market Share year after year. Once you STOP caring about your "Customer's Satisfaction" and the experiences they are having with your Product your days are numbered! I would encourage you to send a copy of your Video (which by the way was very fair) along with a Letter to Ford In Detroit, stating your Case!

I was going to suggest something similar to Pat. I only have had Toyotas for the past 30 years but every time I've had an issue like yours I got the same stock answer from the dealer. I had to keep hammering them or escalate it above the dealer level and always got some sort of result. Dealers are programmed to say no. It's gotten better lately probably because of competition.

John, I always look forward to your videos, and this one was very informative and useful for me. I have the 2021 F-150 Powerboost, and I love it (so far, no issues). You managed the whole issue the best that you could....I think that it was bad luck, i.e. your truck got a defective transmission. I concur with the comment below that Ford should have helped you out. And that leads me to another question...isn't the transmission covered by warranty? I thought Ford had the 5 year "bumper to bumper" warranty...is that not the case with your truck?

Ford's trans warranty is 5yrs/60,000 miles. I believe he mentioned on another vid exceeding the mileage limit.

John great review, one other question how about fuel mileage between the two trucks?
@johnjessjourney2352
@johnjessjourney2352 Год назад
It's roughly the same at about 9.8-10mpg while towing. Wind and hills / mountains create a huge variance in mpg when towing but from what I saw it was comparable. If one was a diesel I'm sure I'd get a higher mpg.

John great overview sir! I am going to test drive two used f150 hdpp trucks next week here I'm ohio...one loaded exactly the way I want but it has a 5.0 but only 8k miles. The other is base xlt with 3.5 and 20k miles. The third truck I will test is a 2021 f150 with powerboost. All the dealers want about $52k. I would love the powerboost for mpgs and 7.2 kw outputin bed. But it only has 1600 pound payload compared to the 2 150s which are close to 2450 pounds. Any recommendations from you or your followers? I am planing on it as a daily driver but weekends a lighter slide in camper mom cab over which would be about 1000 pounds with gear. I figure another 600 with people and dog.
