Free quilting class and sewing lessons! And as in a 'classroom' setting, my tutorials are approximately 1/2 hour+ long....So Join me in my home sewing room making all sorts of quilted goodies! Be aware ~ I like to chat and probably repeat myself over and over, (and stutter sometimes), and if this annoys you, then view elsewhere - but, if patient, you hopefully will learn a new method or technique! Today's tutorial ~ I have made a fairly large quilt ~ 90" x 95" , and have begun to quilt it. Here are just a few tips to get you started quilting on your home sewing machine! :)

I've searched the internet for someone that would show me a common sense approach to quilting on my Janome DC 3018. You are the only person that has been clear from start to finish instructions. I'm a hand quilter, but I'm making a flannel blanket for my husband. I'm using cotton batting which is not friendly to hand quilting. Now I can quilt the blanket on my machine and understand how to feed it through the 6" neck of my machine. Thank you so much, Jean.

This is the first video of yours that I've watched. Baste? You're supposed to baste? I didn't know I was supposed to baste a quilt before sewing a quilt. Oh, well. I've made about 20 quilts, and I tell people as I had them one for a gift, "This was made out of love. If you know anyone who quilts or sews, please do not show them this." (ha) Thanks for posting this- you're fun!!!

You made me laugh. I say the same thing when i gift a quilt. The baby quilt i just finished was fun because the mishaps were turned into positives with cute patches, borders, lace,....It beats quitting after all the work that goes into them. Turned out pretty good in the end.

@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
Thank you so much Cherri:) I love to know that for the most part, I am solely the one making a quilt, from imagining to the binding to the cuddling under!! I quite enjoy the quilting process ~ even if it does take much longer than the actual piecing :) I have though, sent out 3 king size quilts to a long armer ~ due to the fact that with my filming/editing/uploading etc., I just didn't have the time. It was nice to get them back, However I have made over 400 quilts and have quilted most of them by myself;) Thanks for taking time to watch me;)

You are my spirit quilter, Jean. Your videos are quilting in real life, and you tell it like it is. I have a small machine and was worried I'd have to pay to have it done. I watched a video where three women gave advice on not what to do to when bringing to a long arm in a slightly mocking tone. I don't want anyone telling me my work is somehow inadequate. I'll do it myself so it's mine start to finish. Thank you for that affirmation.
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
Aw what a nice thing to say! And for the Snobbish Quilt Police...no room for them in MY sewing room! A quilt that is made with love and passion and therapy is the best medicine and Wonky Seams and mismatched points have EVERYTHING to do with that PERFECT quilt!: )

I love your attitude! I just found your channel! Quilting by check!!!! 😅. I too like to do every aspect of making my quilts from selecting the fabric, cutting, binding and quilting. I hear so many people say they’re quilters only to send them out for long arming, I don’t think I’d feel like it was “my” quilt if I did that…..😊

Thank you so much for showing that the quilt must be supported in order to quilt it. Now I'm going to quilt my queen size on my home machine. Your tips have helped me so much.
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
Oh yes! SOOOOO important! Support on a table Behind the machine and ESPECIALLY to the side! And Of course, in your lap. Making sure there is ZERO stress on the needle at all times. Shove and shmush and adjust, And then just concentrate on one small section at a time, take frequent breaks, quilt when rested, and start in the middle/hardest part, and work you way out. You will be so pleased that you did it:) All the best:)

Wow i really love this video. I love your attitude about the quilting the most. Very encouraging and welcoming towards beginners, which I am in quilting. I watch videos on RU-vid to learn craft but it’s discouraging when the “teacher” just makes fun of the things beginners don’t know. It’s just silly (rude) and scares people away from enjoying your craft with you (Thinking about someone in particular haha) But you are very pleasant to learn from, so thank you for this. Also, I love the way you talk and explain things! Just a very pleasant video. Thank you for the encouragement I gathered from this! (Also enjoyed the talk about the weather :) )

Today I came your video because I'm making my first 10 foot by 10 foot quilt and so it's turning out great. Watching this video today you gave me some ideas and some pointers in quilt making because I was wondering at first how I was going to stitch and sew the middle of mine with my sewing machine, but watching how you did yours gave me the confidence that I can do mine the same way. When you were talking about taking breaks in between I can relate to that because there are lots of times when I have to take a break and come back to it. Thank you so much for sharing this video because it truly made my day and solved my problem and I look forward to watching more of your videos and getting some more tips and ideas on quilt making and designs.

Hi Jean, just discovered you. I'm getting back into Quilting after a break and following the Quilting Academy books. They start small and recommend doing start to finish rather than sending them out. I've got a small brother and the large XV. Really great tips. Thank you. It's motivated me to try and get those tops quilted (my least favourite part)

I know this is an old video but it is so nice to hear your words besides the fact that I could never afford to take my quilts to a long arm quilter I feel the same way these quilts that I make good or bad ugly or beautiful they're mine I'm the one who picks out the colors on the one that bleeds on them when I stick the needle in my finger I'm the one that makes the quilts they're my quilts and I give them away as gifts to my family and friends. So even if I could afford to have them professionally quilted I don't think I would do it. And if I could afford to buy a long arm I believe I would put that money into buying a good car or just a car. But it is nice to hear words coming out of another woman's mouth that reflects how I feel about my quilting. Thank you so much.

i'm currently making my first ever quilt out of my little boy's baby clothes. the quilt top measures 78x78 inches. i'm learning each step of the process as i go. i'm at the basting and quilting stage now and panic has set in - how on earth am i going to be able to manage that?!?! it really didn't occur to me to start with a small project - i like to dive straight in at the deep end. i feel so lucky to have found your video and it's given me the confidence to keep going - thank you. i thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to you... what a lovely lady you are!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory 4 года назад
Aw thank you Cheryl! First of all, don't panic!! Its only a quilt! There are more stressful things in life to worry about!! LOL! Just remember to sew when you are rested, be SURE to have your quilt well supported to the side of you and behind your machine, do a small section at a time, and be sure to keep it loose around your needle (or else there will be 'drag' on the needle....not fun). Take frequent breaks and STEP away from the machine if you are frustrated! It'll be there in the morning or next day or next week!! I was like you...among my very first quilts were king size, appliqued, paper pieced and foundation pieced projects!! Idiot!! Whatever was I thinking!!?!? LOL! And when I look back at them, they weren't BAD, but certainly not great!! LOL! But I am SO proud of all of them!! You should be too!! Well done you!:) Thanks for sharing!! :) Have a lovely evening:)

You can do it Clare! Just take it steady..don't quilt when you are tired. Keep that baby WELL supported to the side, in front and in back. Make sure to concentrate on the area in front of the needle...otherwise you will get discouraged at ALL the rest of the work that is still coming!! LOL! All the best and thank you so much! :)

Oh my gosh! I love you! I've finished pinning a probably queen size farm quilt for my husband. It's been 4 years in the making because I'm a newbie and always will consider myself such. I had somewhat a clue as to how I wanted to quilt it but so afraid to work with my home machine. You have saved the day! I will now attempt it. I did not want to send it out to be quilted of course because of the cost factor, but more importantly I want this to be ALL done by me. Thank you!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
This makes me SO happy!! :) Yes, you CAN do it! Just be sure to keep your shoulders down...have TONS of support in front, behind and to the side of the machine, keep your stitching DIRECTLY in front of the center of your body, take TONS of breaks, roll your shoulders and keep them from creeping up to your ears. Maybe a drink or two, some music, a good attitude and you'll be off and running/quilting!! :) Just remember DO NOT start when you are tired, stressed, annoyed or mad at anyone! Your quilt will know!! :) LOL!! :)

Mamas gotta sew! We had thundersnow, our lights are flickering, cable kicks in and out and a neighbor had a 10-ft pine tree keel over in their front yard. May have to use the generator before the night is over. As long as your son and family are safe, that’s what matters. Insurance companies must be super busy. So glad you and your Juki have come to an ‘understanding’.
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
That son is now digging out from under 16 inches of snow ~ after the tree came down a few days ago! AAaarrgghh!!! But they are planning a trip to Disney soon, and will be sunning themselves! Funny you say about insurance, He is a Public Adjuster!! So he is putting in his OWN claim this time!!! :) My Juki and I have had a serious reckoning, yes, and we are getting along beautifully! :)

Good tutorial! I always look forward to your episodes and quilt blocks. I'm working on your quilt block of the Week with my scrappy stash and I am also working on a quilt I copied from a picture for my little grand daughter. I pieced it with my mother's Singer treadle sewing machine, appliqued flowers with my computerized Janome 11000 se, and am quilting it by hand. I sure hope she appreciates the love and time put into it. I am not as speedy as you. Ha. I'm also now having to do therapy for back problems, so I will be even slower!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
I am sure she will greatly appreciate it! How wonderful is your treadle?!?! Must. Get. One!! :)

I'm so happy I found you! I'm new to quilting and want to make a king quilt eventually, but I have a standard sewing machine. Like you, I want to do it all myself, and not "send it out"! For now, back to lap quilts and pot holders :). Looking forward to more of your videos! Thank you!
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
I'm so pleased you found me too! The important thing is to have LOTS of support in front, behind and to the side of your large quilt. And to concentrate on just what is in front of you, shusshing your quilt nice and loosely in the 'throat' of the machine, working from the center out! You can do it:) All the best:)

Thank you for this video! My first quilt I was quilting by hand, because I was afraid to ruin it whith the mashine. It was a gift for my sister, so it was ok. The second was made of old Jeans, the batting was too thick, but I quilted it by mashine.That was really hard work 😅. Now I made more quilts and get more relaxed. Thank you for sharing your experience! 😸👍☃❄
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
That is why I say start SMALL! Silly you might think, but beginners NEED to get basic basics under their belt before they tackle some larger project! And this should be fun! :) THanks for watching me! :)

Oh wow I am so glad after searching for a week now for someone like you! You explain it all so clearly. This is my first attempt to finish a guilt my mom started years ago and gave it to me to finish for her after her passing. I hope I do her proud, she did all the hard work( her 2nd quilt after having 10 of us kids) I just have to put batting and backing on and quilt it. Lucky for me they are all straight lines I'm doing. God I hope I don't screw it up.
