I know I'm late to the party, but I thought I'd add something for those viewing this in 2021: The amount of ink in the bottles is exactly the right amount. The initialization process on Ecotank printers uses a significant amount of ink, as you can see at 7:47. You're meant to top off the tanks with the remaining ink after initialization, which empties the bottles. This is actually very consumer friendly; Epson includes enough ink to initialize the printer and completely fill the ink tanks. This is also why there's a disparity between the number of pages printed by the ink in the box and by replacement bottles. Replacement bottles are the same size, but you don't have to initialize the printer each time, so that ink can be used for printing, hence the higher yield per bottle after the first one.

@g.mitchell7110
@g.mitchell7110 Год назад
@@UtamagUta I had no problem printing after leaving the printer sitting in my classroom over the summer, about 10 weeks of nonuse. The inkwells shouldn't dry out; they're sealed. The nozzles might get clogged, but there's a built-in cleaning function.

I occasionally work for a computer store which sells EcoTanks, and they're surprisingly easy to sell given the price! The cost per page is very compelling, and they're nicely built too. The store prints a lot - many receipts, demo photos, stuff for the community, and a good few hundred double sided sheets for my own business haha - and after many, many months the tanks aren't even half empty. The printer the store had before would get through a set of cartridges every week! Print speed is really impressive too.

:) Snap. I recently bought the cheaper Ecotank printer for my parents, as they kept having issues with their old Epson and I was impressed with it. I've been thinking about it for a while, and today after watching this I bought the 7750 myself to replace a starting to fail XP-202. Using the TCO calculator on the Epson site, the 7750 and the ink for 5 years would cost me £700. Keeping the XP-202 would cost me £1800 over the same period if I use genuine inks. I did start using non-gen inks but they did gum up the heads and it needed cleaning much more often. So thank you Mat / Techmoan.

The printer is unusable, after 2 to 3 years after only a few thousand pages the error message appears that the cleaning sponge needs to be replaced! And the error message must be reset in the software. Only Epson can do that, and you don't get a reset code by email. In the EU, "maintenance" costs around € 120, a cheek. Anyone who prints a lot should use an office laser.

In 2011, after a year in a new department, I suggested a continuous ink supply system as an experiment. At only £50, it wasn’t going to break the budget and I hoped that it would lead to a reduction in the use of ink cartridges. Between 2010 and 2011, the printing costs dropped from £800 per year to £100 per year. Not only that, more photographic images were being printed than before. It does take a little maintenance to keep it all running but that’s a small sacrifice for saving so much money.

They do have cheaper variant of the Ecotank series that go for around €250 "Epson EcoTank ET-2650". Seems to have fairly identical features. But doesn't have as many color tone tanks. Only 4 vs the 5 on the 7700. And it also prints slower than the 7700.

I liked my Lexmark OK until I found out that it was phoning home! That was about when I got dedicated Internet (not modem dial-up) and the new software firewall I put in identified that there was a program in the printer directory that was contacting Lexmark. I blocked that puppy with the firewall. Then had to delete the file, then create a new directory of the exact same name and write-protect it so the driver couldn't auto-re-install the program, no lie! I wasn't unhappy to move to another brand.... That year the Lexmark had won the comparison tests and it worked well enough. But for photos I still prefer the upscale Epsons. I guess I'll have to flip through his review to see if he does any high quality photo comparisons....

The same goes for Canon printers even today. Pick up a cheapo wired Canon for £25-£30, the replacement inks cost up to £40 per set. I'd rather use an Epson any day of the week, with their cheap ink costs (and the ability to use compatibles) and good quality printers.

It does look very impressive. I still do print on DVD occasionally (for business) so that feature would be useful for me. It really looks like Epson have tried to resolve many of the things that really annoy people about inkjet printers (ink cost and full waste tanks). But there's one other serious flaw in inkjet printers, and the reason I use laser for everything except DVD printing: If you don't use your inkjet printer for a while, especially if it's warm, the inkjet nozzles clog up and the pictures look terrible / stripy. The printer will have a nozzle cleaning feature in the menus, though this is not 100% effective and it drinks ink. A laser printer you can just use when you want to, knowing that every time you hit CNTRL-P RETURN, that it will print quickly, cheaply and efficiently every time, even on cheaper paper. So I would still say that unless you need photo printing or DVD printing, then a laser printer is the way to go. For photo printing though, this new Epson looks hard to beat.

I guess Epson got tired of competing with people using CISS setups using cheaper inks than Epson could sell them for, but that said I can't go back to inkjet, I print so infrequently that Laser is far more economical for me personally, that and I only paid £36 for my printer, plus a another £36 for another near identical one with nearly full toners which will last me for years... :)

Ecotank system is great. Just remember to watch the ink levels. Not good for printer if it runs dry. This can be avoided by following the correct procedure when re-filling ink (fill to Max line and select menu option telling printer you just filled up). Be careful moving printer too. Tilting printer at an extreme angle isn't recommended either. Still great system, none the less.

I really do not know why so many people have problems with dried up ink. I experienced it once. Yes ONCE. And that was about 15 years ago. It was an old Lexmark printer. Otherwise neither my Epson nor my HP ever had dried up ink even if I had not used them in over a year. I just switched from my Epson to the HP because that one has Wi-fi and can print double-sided on its own which is a true blessing for printing university texts.
@MissDatherinePierce

Nope, just Northern Germany. It isn't very humid here but still I never experienced any problems except with that very old Lexmark one which was a monster of a machine. My HP printer is maybe 3-4 years old and I just went abroad last year for half a year and no problem whatsoever printing with it afterwards. Idk what I apparently do right compared to the rest of the world or if I'm maybe just extremely lucky :D I have way more problems with data trash coming out instead of the correct file. But my guess is that the printer sometimes gets the signal twice through the rooter and the repeater but I'm not sure and if it is in case the issue how to fix it.

I recently purchased an Epson 4750 EcoTank. Dang! That's a beautiful printer. Not quite as photo friendly as the 7700, but it's better than what I need. I've been in manufacturing and engineering all my life and I cannot understand the unimaginable array of different ink cartridges. Every new model, another set of incompatible cartridges. (must be the same nimrods that can justify 200 different size oil filters) It's just another item for stores to carry, another item to be "... temporarily out of stock". There's no reason for that proprietary bullshit! (even if every printer took the same cartridge, they'd still sell the same number every year) Even when this Epson does need ink, it's only about $70 to restock. That's .3 liters of ink. That's about 10x more ink that's in the cartridges. I give this printer a 5 star rating. This is my 8th printer in 29 years. I've used everything from Epson 9-pin dot matrix to HP and other Epson ink jets and this one is by far my favorite. In 4 months it's never misfired once.

Yup, I can see where someone like Techmoan could make great use of this printer. But I like my late 90's black and white laser printer. It's kinda slow, has to warm up, it's bulky, it's ugly, It has a stupid Fax feature. It has a gob of buttons I have never used. But when I hit 'print' about ten seconds later........IT PRINTS. Every time. Which is more than I can say about any inkjet I've ever used. And thus concludes my inkjet printer story I've been saving for the comment section of a youtube video. Think I will stroll down to the pub and regale the patrons with it.

I had an old Panasonic B/W laser printer from 1993 and I used it until the late 2000's. Only reason I got rid of it was because it used a serial connector and new computers don't come with those anymore, and also I couldn't find new toner. But it was a truly reliable piece of gear.

Same here. I have a cheap Brother b&w laser printer (I think it was 80 or 90€), that's at least 10 if not 15 years old. Never gave me any trouble and has very even toner distribution (I use it to print templates to UV expose PCBs as well, where very opaque, uniform and sharp prints are important). Never had the need to print out a photo at home. And if I do need photos, I go to a shop where I can get prints on decent thick photo paper for less than any printer at home could do.

Mat, please do a followup video where you attempt to print the same colour photos after NOT HAVING USED this printer for several months. I am curious whether the ink nozzles will gum up like they do on every other inkjet printer I have worked with, or whether this printer series brings something new to the table. This may make using this printer as your primary unit difficult, but would be useful to me and others before potentially buying it and using it as I normally would. Would also be interested in seeing a followup video where you use third party ink refill bottles which are certain to appear on the market shortly for this model. Best wishes - excellent video.

I'm always interested on how these devices function NOT when they're first set up, but months later after actual use (or non-use, in this case). Most of the home users I help on IT stuff would in fact leave it sitting idle for (6-8+) weeks at a time, but expect it to work 100% when they did need to use it (like most other things they buy). They simply don't have enough stuff to send it to keep it constantly lubricated and worked in. This hasn't changed in the past twenty years of inkjet printing, and not even in the last eight or ten years during which most of them were carrying smartphones and snapping photos several times a week. These are the same people with gummed up lawnmowers, weed whackers, and electric generators -- they don't have enough grass to cut to keep them from varnishing inside. The printers being gummed up would certainly show on simple document printing, but especially on the photo printing, which was why I asked about seeing that. I know a lot of the non-oddball stuff Mat reviews is his own gear, making going without printing for six or eight weeks difficult without a backup printer onhand, but it would be nice to see since this printer otherwise looks interesting and since he already has it onhand. Your habits (and mine) aren't what I'm worried about with this review, since I already have my own bases covered with several color lasers (and pro printing on a high volume and frequently serviced machine at 15c per print at Costco). You're right though, that having a great device would lure you to print more than you had previously (which is obviously what Epson was probably intending).

It's a great point and a real world scenario. I've worried about the same point to the extent that I have an email rule that automatically sends a suitably coloured test page to my 'connected' inkjet printer once a week. There's probably a better and/or less low-tech solution, but it seems to work.

I don't think someone buying a ecotank printer is the type who would leave his printer unused for months at a time.

It is funny, I have been curious about these printers for a while. This IS the review I was looking for. And, watching the puppets, it dawned on me that I have two printers, one was given to me in 2003 and the other I bought for $5 at an auction in 2015. They're both still running. Wow.

@Howard Black With most Epsons (that don't have maintenance boxes) you could self-refill the black bottle by taking the contents of the waste ink tube. Divert the waste tube to an external container (so it doesn't saturate inside the machine)and just refill the black when your external container gets full. Problem solved.

*laughs in dumpster printer* A year ago I picked up an Epson XP-760 from an e-waste bin that has a motorised output tray, the ink inside dried up and prevented the printer to print anything so I used hot water to dissolve the dried ink, then bought a cheap C.I.S from ebay with similar ink bottles. It's still working great after using it a lot for school.

A few days ago I picked up an Epson XP 352 whose ink trays had filled up, causing the printer to lock itself out of use. Of course, I reset it and it worked. The ink trays didn't actually need cleaning in this case!

After owning over 5 inkjet printers they all failed in the same way. The inkjets would dry up and then the printing would decrease in quality and have lines. This inkjet printer will dry up unless it's used very regularly. Initial printing will look admittedly great. But as I said quality will most of the time decrease rapidly. If anyone needs a printer, you should consider a laser printer. They are good for office environments and home use (even if it get little use) Laser printers also have larger toner cartridges. Mine is much more reliable than any of my old printers.

A word of warning for the EcoTank series. These printers will disable themselves when they believe the "Waste Ink Pad" is saturated. It's a large sponge internal to the printer that the printer ejects ink into to keep the heads from clogging up over time. In my experience printing large photos (7.5x12 full color), this happens after about 2000 prints. You CANNOT reset this warning in any officially supported way other than sending it in for service repairs which is not free. You CAN use a program called WicReset (waste ink counter reset) which charges a small fee per reset (I think $10 for one reset, or as low as $2.50 when you buy multiple resets at once), and open up the printer to create a drain for the waste ink into a container. My first time I used a kit called a Printer Potty, but the second time I just used some standard plastic tubing and a large bottle to store the waste ink. Still a great value, but its very disingenuous of Epson to advertise these massive amounts of prints you can get per set of ink, then find out that the printer will flat out stop printing anything after enough ink has gone through the system.

I had one of the original Ecotank printers and was initially impressed however after 12 months of incredibly light use it began to miss vertical lines. Nothing could cure the problem and ended up in the skip so I was put off ever buying an Epson again. Does look like they've made some improvements on the originals though now and I may be tempted to give them a second chance. Would love to hear how this is in 12 months time.

Hope Epson pays you a commission, this review just finalized my decision between the Epson and Canon tank-printers. I suspect the reason they specified a smaller number of prints for the bottles included is that you need to use some of that ink to prime the system, where refills will be capable of printing to their full volume.

I have so many interesting stories all about inkjet printers! Like the time I got that Lexmark printer and the ink cartridge cost more than the printer! And then there was the great paper jam of 1998, and who can forget - INKPOCALYPSE! That happened in 2006. Well, I bought this ink cartridge replacement system and it came with a syringe. And I didn't want to cause a mess so I went into the garden. The next door neighbour who's a policeman, well he looks over the fence and he sees me with this syringe full of magenta, and the next thing you know is the front door gets kicked in...

Great review - I'm definitely considering this. One question I have though it's very hard to test is how it copes with being left unused for a lengthy period, like a month or more. An old Epson I had used to dry out and was devil to get unclogged and working again. Also, will it print photos to A4 size, or only 6 x 4?

Ive avoided ink jet printers since around 2005 when I got my mono laser. I mostly print text documents for/from college so colour wasn't an issue. Replacing carts was what changed my mind! I do have to say though, the quality of those photo prints really made me sit up and take notice. Dad is retiring this year and I have a long-term 'project' in mind for him - old photos/negatives and slides many pre-dating the 70's! He could use something like this to scan and print - very interesting, thank you TechMoan!

I'm not sure if it was editing, but after the setup I noticed the level of the ink tanks. It used a lot of ink just to set the machine up. I guess that little bit that's left in the bottles is to fill it back up to full after you set it up. Could be.

When I set up my Epson L555 (an early model of EcoTank), it did the same thing, i.e. used up a good deal of ink to set it up. I believe it has to run a large amount of ink through, to fill up the ink tubes (and of course, to shove a load into the maintenance box). Most Epsons don't even have maintenance boxes, they just have a set of sponges that get full, and the printer shuts down when it thinks it is full !

I remember a time, some 25 years ago or so, when a major selling point of ink jets was it's quiet operation. They wouldn't wake a cat! Ink jets seem to have become louder in the past 5 to 10 years, what do you think?

It depends on the brand and the model. Epson inkjets are comparatively loud. HP inkjets have been quiet for years. Canon inkjets are the quietest of all, and have been for around 20 years!

Just bought this printer as i was looking for a inkjet for general use and high-quality photo printing that my HP Laserjet Pro MFP M283fdn can't do. When looking to purchase an Inkjet I was initially concerned about the quality of cheaper printers on the market, as well as the cost of cartridges/toners as my Laserjet Pro toners cost a fortune. After hearing about the EcoTank range from Epson, reading reviews and watching this video I ended up grabbing it despite the higher price tag compared to other inkjets. The comments surrounding the Output tray hold true, pulling it out in order to print is a minor inconveniece but understandable considering how much of a mess an ink spillage can cause. The foldable lids and trays make this look pretty stylish for a printer compared to the massive behemoth the Laserjet Pro is. You do get a lot of ink with this as explained in the video, quite generous compared to other printers and helps to keep the maintenance costs down. For occassional printing it should last a very long time and the inclusion of spare inks and an extra maintenance tray is great. One important thing to note is you do need to print every now and then otherwise you run the risk of clogging the ink tanks. I suggest doing this every 3-4 days to keep the risk of clogging low. If you do get a clog there should be some guides to unclog it rather than tossing the whole thing out. All in all i'm really satisfied with the quality of the prints from this EcoTank and would recommend to others, despite the high asking price.
