Also (and I could be wrong) but I believe they are married off to male relatives pretty frequently. Men will marry their nieces and cousins all the time, and if that’s the case incest is clearly not the problem here.

I get that its gross that they're cousins. But it is EXTREMELY hard to find someone who you're not related to since the cult starts from one man and his wives. Also they have MANY cousins so it's easy to not see them that way since you wouldn't even have spoken to all of them. I'm not saying that it's right, but it is understandable.

yeah it is extremely understandable, she never knew she would like girls, and much less a member of her extended family. she's surrounded by these people all the time, she didn't choose to be born into a polygamist community that forced relatives and siblings and cousins together. she never had a real choice until her relationship with her cousin, and it made her happier at the very least to be around her. i don't think she should be shamed and condemn for what her relatives were born into and also did. it's a never ending cycle. people should really blame the man/men who started this whole mess in the first place.

This scenario is something *most* Mormons would find deeply humiliating to have any connection to... and the majority of them seem to think it's a GOOD thing the law required their great-grandparents to discontinue polygamy. That being said, many Mormon police officers would eagerly seize the opportunity to distinguish themselves from isolated extremists!!

Because they own entire towns. The grocery store, auto stores, banks, shopping stores everything that’s why they are so rich they have the children do all the manual labor starting really really young. They even have polygamist in the local police so no one is going to arrest them and they are extremely isolated

It's because of the separation of church and state, they are allowed to practice it due to it tying to their religious beliefs. That's why when polygamy became illegal, there was a splitting of the Mormon church, between the fundamentalist Mormons (polygamists) and the Mormons. They are in no way tied to each other in religious beliefs and even have separate doctrine and church leaders. They hate it when they are generalized together, as they are two separate religions. The flds are isolated from modern civilization, which makes it easier to keep the kids and adults brainwashed.

@@amxie9332 Polygamy is where a man takes on multiple wives. In the US, polygamy is illegal, and they bypass the laws by having "spiritual" wives after they are legally married to their first wife. It is only one man and multiple wives. Never the other way around.

@Jazmin Farris Even in states like Alabama, plenty of people stigmatize cousin marriage; laws that permit cousin marriage *don't* necessarily reflect the norms of the area. {I forget where exactly I read this, but I do remember doing some sort of research.}

I wondered that but then I thought about it...these people are leaving all they know. There's no time to pack in advance or they will be caught out. Their things are all they have and to leave is trauma enough without having no belongings.

It's normal in their community culture. IDK what you're bothered by. They're girls so they can't reproduce. What exactly is actually wrong with it besides social stigmas? With multiple wives, the term 'sister' and 'cousin' is often used fairly loosely. Jeffs gave widowed wives and sisters to other men, and sent girls and boys to other communities. That led to increasing intermarriage and increased hereditary medical issues. At least they know they're related!

Listen, not all FLDS siblings share mothers. So probably like 75% of all the people there are related somehow. She said that she only got to know her after they shared a room, so it was probably like being assigned a roommate at college or boarding school.

My best friend grew up mornin but when they moved to Utah everything changed. She became an FLDS. And she called me up one night to help her run away I was 16 hours away. That night I called my cousin who had a pick up truck and we met in Needles . We met her at her mom's one night and while her mom was engaging with her new step dad we left very quietly. She took all her clothes and her 2 cats. She called her dad's aunt and told her that she was on her way. We left at 4 in the morning. And our adrilian was way high that morning. We drove to her aunts which was another 9 hours away. She left FLDS and her mother stayed for another 2 years until one night she left too. They both escaped.

When she says cousin it doesn’t always mean close cousins in places like this. Sometimes the term Aunt, Uncle & cousin is used as a way to show that two families are close. I don’t know if that’s the case in this family though.

They live in these communities with others like them. The trucks, or 'God Squad' as they call them, are there to intimidate and patrol the area. They have them in all of these church/cult communities to keep their people in line.
