At 17 she realized she was in a religious prison. She had just been "arranged" to be married to a stranger and had been plotting her escape for 2 years. Determined not to become a plural wife for the sole purpose of having as many children as possible, she did whatever it took to leave and pursue higher education at a large cost. See how she transformed her life and navigated the hard lessons of the "real world".

Let's give a big round of applause to her father! 👏👏👏 To be programmed the way FLDS people are and still choose to support his daughter's wish is an incredible show of bravery and tenacity. Off course this takes nothing away from Judith's courage and resilience. In that regard, she's her father's daughter.

I understand the sentiments for the dad, but ultimately her story is a proof of her own resilience and perseverance. Had her dad not backed her up, I still believe she would reclaim her own life and destiny. What a remarkable woman! I would love to hear more about her faith journey as well but maybe she didn't want to talk about it on purpose, and I respect that.

But the risk of losing everyone you love is often a major factor in people staying in these groups. Like people praise the Amish for that when they're teenagers, they're told to go explore whatever they want to. Then when they come back they're then baptised and expected to fit into the group. But again they have very little education, no real understanding of how to handle a lot of basic life skills and they give up everything if they choose to leave. It's the illusion of choice, not really free choice
@not_you_i_dont_even_know_you
Burst into tears hearing about her father's choice to help her rather than betray her. 😭❤️ Edit: i grew up as a fundie evangelical, with parents who were "progressive" in that they recycled, and didn't express vitriolic hate for lgbtq people and i was allowd to wear shorts. I didnt realize how wildly controlled my life was until i was 19 and in the outside world for the first time. I'm 34 and still unpicking the knotted mess of a worldview I left... I'm queer, sister is trans, both very far left in our politics and thankfully my parents still love us, despite thinking we will go to hell. Could be worse.

I felt the same fear with my parents (Fundie Baptist). When I came out as non-binary they were confused but we’re open to learning, and genuinely have learned a lot. When I came out as pansexual they kinda saw it coming. When I became a cam SW, they even supported my choices and celebrated my confidence then because I’ve struggled with an eating disorder most of my life and this was a big jump. I had to reassure them that I was safe and then they relaxed. I’m 27 now, and I actually have an amazing friendship with them now, I’d even say best friends! Sometimes our religious parents can REALLY surprise us in the best way.

This “marriage” of little girls to creepy old men is disgusting. That elder sounds like a little kid having a temper tantrum after his parents told him, no, you can’t have any more candy. Good for you in being the adult by saying, “No!” Good for your father in setting his own boundary despite his own upbringing. Looks like you inherited his good brain and loving heart.

I have to say I got goosebumps when she spoke about her dad's reaction. I almost brought me to tears. I listen to a podcast by Amanda Rae. She escaped from the Kingston Group also known as The Order. She then was on a show where she helped a lot of women escape from various groups, including some from Colorado City. It's so incredible that her parents supported her. I can't imagine the strength it must have taken to say "No, that's not my path" and then have to go and tell her father. Such a beautiful outcome!

I was thinking such a foundation should exist. Like Scientology’s Aftermath Foundation. They get donations and ex members are there to help new escapees. They would know and understand the best what they need, though non Mormons could certainly help under their supervision. Knowing such a place exists might give others more hope to escape.

Some great last words there by Jude in her Linda listen comment. The “disease to please” is so true! We don’t call things out because we don’t want to upset people so it’s easier to go along. I have been guilty of that but have learnt to call a spade a spade. I also listen to my gut because I also know now scientifically it’s a message from my brain weighing up past experiences warning me. I loved Jude’s comment “you can’t throw velvet over a chair and call it a throne”, that cracked me up 😂 I’m really glad you dared say NO to the marriage and your Dad backed you up. Imagine if you’d been married off to a crypt keeper like Roland Jeffs 😱. After all you’ve been through, the best part part is you have your own family, career and a relationship with most of your family. Maybe you were the catalyst for them seeing the light for a better life? Thank you Jude for being so open and sharing your story. ❤️Thank you Shelise for always being compassionate and asking the right questions. ❤️

Thank God, I finally got out when he went into a psychiatric hospital, and lost his power to control the 55 remaining church members..Now, I bask in the grace Christ provided for us through his life, death and resurrection! So amazing for Jude's Dad to not only accept & her leaving, but also having his own journey of leaving the faith but remaining in the community! I think we hear so often how it's generally easier for men, especially men of past generations, to just stay; these churches and leaderships are so often built by men & for men. I think it's incredible, and must take a massive amount of humility for him to realize that he was wronged, and how he as a patriarch and father wronged his children. To be able and willing to confront that and continue the work of building these relationships with his children from the ground up is incredibly inspiring to me, and I think is an amazing example for other men that it's never too late ♡

Thank you for sharing your story! It's so important that people be aware of the harm these cults pose to people. This is not religious freedom when the religion controls people like this!

To lose one's Tribe can be truly terrible...I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Very happy for you that your parents did leave the cult and take most of your siblings out with them. Can't believe he's still living in the community, though! How do they treat him and your remaining sib? Oh, that is awesome that the Trust has been amended! Yay! "Throw velvet on a lawn chair and call it a throne." LOL! Too many people do that! Somebody needs to kick the folding legs out from under them! Yessss...the "disease to please" is often quite deadly, if not to the body, certainly to the psyche and soul.

I really enjoy your program. These interviews are so important. Btw I’m sure people tell you all the time you are a dead ringer for Natalie Portman. Keep up the great work.

I watch escaping polygamy and i know its a reality show, but i still get the feeling it woukd be as crazy and scary as the show portrays.

Amanda from the show has a youtube channel, Amanda Rae, with interviews with a lot of the people, background info about the show etc. It probably is dramatised especially later on because American reality shows but its more realistic than you would think. Especially Melanie's escape which was so dramatic

Shalisse if you do live's people will send you superchats usually with questions for you to answer in the best of your ability, and they'd definitely want to ask guests questions too. Also, it'll grow your subscribe count. Aaron Smith-Levin at growing up in Scientology would likely help you, BTW he's been reporting as a journalist at the Danny Masterson trial Tuesday/Tomorrow is the closing arguments but I'm sure he'd be happy to help and to talk about the case in my opinion

I'm surprised, given what I've heard and read in books, that they let you leave that meeting, having said no to the man they'd chosen for you.

There were always children running around and a baby crying for many years when I was growing up. There were nine of us children and we were always moving, Papa being in the Navy. My two oldest brothers were also in the military, Jimmy in the Army and Walter in the Navy. One of my younger sisters also joined the Navy. I’m 73 now, staying single, but I can’t complain my life has been boring. I’m still a practicing Catholic, and religion is an important part of my life. It’s an anchor on a very, very long chain, not a prison.

There is so so much freedom in Christ Jesus. And he frees us from our sins so that we no longer have to be bound to them. We can change and become better people. It's a beautiful thing and the way that these cult leader is bastardize it will condemn them in a very big way. It is not in any way okay to treat people the way that these Cults do, it is so perverse and destructive

@somethinggood9267 totally agree with this. The stated philosophy and intent of religion can be so beautiful but the way it has been perverted and poisoned by cult leaders is just horrible.

I absolutely love your channel, and Ive already sent a few eps to one of my besties who is very affected by having grown up Mormon (his dad was kind of high up in the church, as well) I do have one general YT question: what’s up with content creators starting episodes with a random snippet of the episode and then doing the intro? It messes with me bc I feel like I’ve already seen the ep, when that excerpted part comes up in the episode

A hope chest isn’t necessarily a bad idea. It depends upon what you put in it! I didn’t have one as it’s not a part of my tradition, but if I had had one, I’d have put a wide variety of things in it over my growing up years. Some traditional things towards home, marriage, and children, yes, but many other items like university supplies, camping and travel stuff, a forest ranger hat, teaching materials, art supplies, medical tools, auto supplies, even supplies to become a sister, (nun), like a Rosary, prayer book, etc.
