This is an incredible message on the text of Matthew chapter 10. The Lord Jesus promises persecution and judgement on that 1st-century generation. Pastor Jeff Durbin delivered this sermon to Apologia Church and gives a very important connection between the Old Testament and the New. The Old Testament promised salvation, judgment, and a Kingdom. The Gospel According to Matthew is woven together in such a way as to maintain an intimate connnection with Old Testament eschatology. Pastor Jeff makes some powerful observations that make the ministry of the Lord Jesus look beautiful.

I remember the near EXACT same experience with a nonbeliever in reciting verses from the Bible that Pastor Jeff had. I found myself calling out my experience out loud as I listened to this, and you know what happened, Pastor Jeff repeated his own experience...exact same proceedings. Christians, God really will equip you for His work when you honor His word with study and fellowship.

I actually just started reading "Biblical Eschatology" by Jonathan Menn. It's a great book so far. The first few chapters talk about how one's hermeneutics determine one's view of the entire Bible from creation to redemption. It made me realize that eschatology, while something that shouldn't fracture the body of Christ, is important to study and understand.

"time is near" -- Time refers to epochs, eras. or seasons. The next great epoch of God's redemptive history is imminent. But although Christ's coming is the next event, it may be delayed so long that people begin to question whether He will ever come (Matt. 24:36-39, 2 Peter 3:3-4)

Jeremiah Nortier I disagree. That statement about a delay so long people begin to question His return, that is an assumption on your part. The Christians in the first century were being persecuted by Jews (and others) for abandoning the faith and following Jesus. Many fell back into the Jewish system during the forty years between Jesus ascension and His return. But those that kept the faith survived. They fled to the mountains just as they were told and they avoided the Roman army that laid siege to God’s former people, and He gave His name to another people.

@@Copenator333 so God executed His bride Israel and married another... disinheriting them from all future promises of restoration? If that's true then how can you be so sure that He won't do the same for Christians one day if you honestly believe God would cut Israel off from all hope forever instead of just temporarily (Romans 11)? "That statement about a delay so long people begin to question His return, that is an assumption on your part" That's no more an assumption any more than 'assuming' that if you jump into a lake, you'll get wet. 40 years is hardly enough time to make sense in light of passages like 2 Peter 3:3-4

One of the reasons I'd not want to join a Baptist Church is because of the amount of dispensationalist teachings out there. I'm Anglican, grew up Presbyterian. I can handle credo-baptism (and conform were I to join a Baptist church), but not new age dispensationalism. If more Baptist Churches were to get back to their roots, it might be more easier to consider them as I move about the country (in my line of work every 2-3 years I have to move). Bring back some liturgy (all Baptist Hymnals have scripture responsive readings in them), and reformed beliefs (1689 LBCF) to include a reformed theology in the sacraments.

Your dilemma can be resolved by understanding that Christ’s return has two parts. A snatching of the saints that can occur at any moment and no one knows the day nor hour (1 Thess 4:13-18, 1 Cor 15:50-58) compared with the second coming seen by all, which occurs after the following 7 year tribulation, when Christ comes in judgment to reign, preceded by signs, Christ comes with the saints and lands on the Mt of Olives (Matt 24:29-30, Rev 1:7, Rev 19:11-16, Zech 14:4).

Does Jeff believe that the revelatory spiritual gifts of prophecy, tongues, healing were for the apostles before 70AD for the preaching of the Gospel to the Jews? This is an interesting twist on the traditional cessationist view that sees the gifts for the establishment of the early Church. It actually makes a lot of sense.
@Copenator333
@Copenator333 5 лет назад
I don’t know Jeff’s view, but the one you summarize is my view. The purpose of tongues was to bring those of all nations to Christ in the first century. (See Acts 2). It makes no sense for “tongues” to be spoken in a church full of English speaking believers. Peter used this gift to bring those speaking different languages to Christ in the first century. The gifts were tools used to establish the body of Christ prior to the second coming in AD70.

Copenator What about 1 Corinthians 12? In the whole chapter is described the order of the body of church after Jesus's first coming. What about ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:8-10‬ “Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.” The "perfect" is Jesus and this is the NT after Jesus's first coming. Meaning that the gifts are still here in the church and should be "in order" as described in 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Please prove to me scripturally that the gifts are no longer with us or some have "passed away" without the "perfect" coming yet. Not just assuming or what you believe but use scripture so I can understand if what you say is true. Thanks.

I AM awake No problem. As I was writing a response, I realized I needed to ask some clarifying questions to make sure we are on the same page. Paul said there would be an end to the gifts. When the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. Would you agree they lived in the “partial”? So when their partial time ends, the gifts end? Who was the book of 1 Corinthians written to? 1 Corinthians 1:1-2 (NASB) 1 Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: Pretty clearly this is written to 1st century believers. They have been dead for nearly 2000 years. My position is they lived when the perfect was about to come. They lived at the end of the partial. Some of them even saw the transition from partial to perfect and then lived in the perfect. Who is the “we” in 1 Cor. 13:9? 1 Corinthians 13:9 (NASB) For we know in part and we prophesy in part; I think he is clearly talking about himself and his contemporaries. Now, who is the “we” that Paul is talking about in 1 Cor. 15:51? 1 Corinthians 15:51 (NASB) Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, Here is my point. A summation of this post. Paul wrote 2000 years ago to people living in the “partial” and that some of THEM would see the perfect in their life time. The spirits were a gift to THEM to help THEM save people from the judgement about to come. Revelation 3:10-11 (NASB) 10 'Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is ABOUT TO COME upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. 11 'I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown. They were living in the last days, not us. Hebrews 1:1-2 (NASB) 1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in THESE LAST DAYS has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. They saw antichrists and lived in the last hour. 1 John 2:18 (NASB) Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. Have a good one. Thanks for the response.

My earnest, respectful answer to your question: I am not convinced dispensationalism is a false hermeneutic. As a result, I think there is Biblical evidence for a literal, future redemption and glorification of national, ethnic Israel. I wanted to inform people who, as I was, might be unaware of a different approach to eschatology. I wish I had known more about the different hermeneutical approaches long ago. My question for you, brother: What does Romans 11:26 mean?
@petermenkveld4162
@petermenkveld4162 6 лет назад
I like replacement Theology. I do think this is a secondary issue, so I think Christians can disagree about this and still respect each other. I would say Romans 11:26 is talking about the true Israel being the church. (right before Paul talks about gentiles being saved) Like in Galatians, God's promise to Abraham was ultimately about Jesus. And the church is Jesus' bride and I do not think Jesus will have 2 women for all eternity. But I could be wrong. God bless Ex-Tyrant

I agree with this eschatology does matter , thanks to you I'm now very confused on a few things and can't find a church that agrees with your teaching . One thing I will take the space to point out . Matthew 24:37 I'm not convinced you're looking at this quite right : you teach that this refers to Gods chosen being left and the evil swept away , yes and no . In the days of Noah Gods chosen were taken up into the ark . This can very easily be looked at both ways , now I don't know who is right and who is wrong , both sides can't be . While it is easy to read that most of this is about what took place in 70AD , it almost reads just like Revelation . Two different things seem to be talked about . You also teach that only the last couple chapters of Revelation are about the final days . Then who are the 2 witnesses in chapter 11 ?

Please explain how He made a covenant. Plus, they did continue to minister to Jews even after the Gentiles were reached.

His second coming was in AD70. He didn’t leave everyone blind. There have always been a remnant. Some saw His second coming for what it was, some continued in the ways of the Old Covenant, and some still wait for His coming. The resurrection is spiritual. When a believer dies today, they go directly to be with Jesus forever. They never die spiritually.

Collyn Smith I believe you are making an extremely common mistake, unfortunately. When considering the “whole world” described by the New Testament authors and Jesus, we have to consider what THEY meant by the term, not what we mean when we say the term. Here is an example... Jesus said the gospel had to go out to the “whole world” and then the end would come. Matthew 24:14 (NASB) "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come. Here we have the fulfillment of that prophecy. Paul said the gospel had already been proclaimed throughout the whole world. Romans 1:8 (NASB) First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. We have to allow the New Testament authors to interpret what the words meant because we are so far removed from the culture the Bible was written to.
@collynsmith786
@collynsmith786 5 лет назад
@@Copenator333 yes jesus said the whole world, him being God wouldn't say just the whole world and not actually mean it. The apostle paul uses that terminology in the same way the jews saw christ when people were following him. They said the whole world was following him. Jesus does not mistaken his wording. I will say if thats true then why are we still here? And whats the point in preaching the gospel even to the far reaches the the earth untouched by the gospel if he didn't mean the whole world and only meant just that world?
@Copenator333
@Copenator333 5 лет назад
Collyn Smith I think we need to let the authors interpret for themselves. Do you think you know what Jesus meant better than Paul? Look at this verse in Luke... Luke 2:1 (ESV) In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. The word for world here in Greek is the same one used in Matthew 24:14. It means “known world” or “inhabited earth”. Luke 2:1 (NASB) Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This verse in Luke, Matthew 24:14 and Romans 10:18 all use the exact same Greek word. Romans 10:18 (NASB) But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD." Jesus was not mistaken. Neither was Paul. It seems you are imposing your world view on text not written to you. We have to consider what THEY meant. Not what those words mean to us today. What those words meant to THEM back then. Appreciate the discussion. Thanks for being civil.

All dispensationalist say the seven years in Daniel 9 is talking about the Anti-Christ desecrating the temple at the middle of the end time tribulation period. Two completely different interpretations of Daniel 9. Someone is wrong and someone is right. Both interpretations cannot be right. The only thing agreed on is Messiah will be killed. Overall two totally radical different ways to Interpret Daniel 9 Actually Jeff Durbin makes a pretty air tight scriptural argument for his position.

I've heard this 70AD explanation time after time being preached like it answers everything and it never really makes sense to me considering a few things. 1. If Jesus did indeed return in a sense in 70 AD how come neither the Gospel of John or the book of Revelation make no note of this quite important past event? You know, another return of Jesus, I would think it would be mentioned. 2. Just read Matthew 24. I'm going to parse it down for you here. Quoting the verses 16-21 what Jeff quoted in his sermon and then showing that it actually continues after that talking about the same event. Matthew 24 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: ... 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. .... 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. ------ You can see this is a continuation and not a separate event because of verse 29 "after the tribulation of those days". a) When in 70 AD did the sun darken and stars fall from heaven? Or is this just figurative? b) Did Jesus gather his elect in 70 AD? c) Did all the tribes of the earth see him and mourn? d) He shall send his angels with the sound of a trumpet. Sounds really similar to the trumpets in Revelation doesn't it? So you would also have to take a preterist view that the book of Revelation was written before 70 AD if you wish to hold to this view since Revelation is clearly describing future events.
@2drsdan
@2drsdan 7 лет назад
It's all about the second coming, read my post above. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 9:28 when Christ comes the second time and what for. The Preterists have this part wrong, that said there is much they have that is spot on.

what these 70AD freaks don't mention that Jesus didn't finish His Oliver discourse on Matthew 24 , but continue to chapter 25! Then in the beginning of Matthew 26:1 it reads "And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished ALL THESE SAYINGS..." which is referring from Matthew 24-25!
@2drsdan
@2drsdan 7 лет назад
@Jaakko Vallinkoski What they have wrong is the verse in Hebrews, they don't get it. Preterist's say the "second coming" happened in 70A.D. ,a singular event, Hebrews clearly say's Jesus's second coming is "unto salvation" a timeless event which happens every time someone gets "saved", becomes "born again". What they get right is the fulfillment of Jesus's Olivet Discourse and the apocalyptic "Last Day's" end of the Old Covenant with it's temple sacrifice. That is Christ coming on the "clouds of judgment" (an old testament, prophetic speak reference). Christ comes again and again and again, but the only, quote, second coming verse is Hebrews 9:28. No other verses use the words "second coming".

Half of the truth is being preached here. This is not a lie, and very true, but a good description of a single tree of someone unaware of the forest. Contra popular proverb, half the truth is NOT a lie, but merely incomplete. For example, God (Jesus) did in fact physically rode on a physical cloud on His ascension and in fact will come back exactly as that. Figurative language does not fit the ascension and the return will not either. There was a partial fulfillment, described in Matthew, but many promises remain unfulfilled. Again, a good presentation of the partial fulfillment prophesied in Matthew, but unable to explain the rest of the forest.

Agreed eschatology matters a little. Being in christ matters more then anyother thing. And yes bad eschatology can mess with you but who cares if we all know we are saved regardless of our view of end times.

Hang on, talk about taking things in context, that C. S. Lewis quote was highly misrepresented. Here's the entire quote: “Say what you like,” WE SHALL BE TOLD, “the apocalyptic beliefs of the first Christians have been proved to be false. It is clear from the New Testament that they all expected the Second Coming in their own lifetime. And worse still, they had a reason, and one which you will find very embarrassing. Their Master had told them so. He shared, and indeed created, their delusion. He said in so many words, ‘this generation shall not pass till all these things be done.’ And he was wrong. He clearly knew no more about the end of the world than anyone else.” It is certainly the most embarrassing verse in the Bible. Yet how teasing, also, that within fourteen words of it should come the statement “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.” The one exhibition of error and the one confession of ignorance grow side by side. That they stood thus in the mouth of Jesus himself, and were not merely placed thus by the reporter, we surely need not doubt. Unless the reporter were perfectly honest he would never have recorded the confession of ignorance at all; he could have had no motive for doing so except a desire to tell the whole truth. And unless later copyists were equally honest they would never have preserved the (apparently) mistaken prediction about “this generation” after the passage of time had shown the (apparent) mistake. This passage (Mark 13:30-32) and the cry “Why hast thou forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34) together make up the strongest proof that the New Testament is historically reliable. The evangelists have the first great characteristic of honest witnesses: they mention facts which are, at first sight, damaging to their main contention. C.S. Lewis is defending the validity of the Bible, and the quote Jeff read was the voice of C.S. Lewis but the voice of skeptics as understood by Lewis.

Zach Andrews Lewis was admitting that the events prophesied by Jesus didn’t occur the way he thought they should have. But Lewis was wrong they happened WHEN Jesus said they would, in THAT (not some distant future) generation.

I appreciate your ministry, what you do at the mormon temples, and the abortion mills. However, I disagree with Calvinism and preterism. 1) I very distinctly had an experience with Holy Spirit, where I was given a clear choice whether or not to follow Him. 2) We will be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye... that is our "blessed hope". There are many studies by outstanding Bible scholars also, that outline Biblical patterns, and describe the differences between rapture and second coming (Chuck Missler, Ron Rhodes, etc). Regardless, be blessed, continue in the faith, and keep studying~👍😎

Dash Riprock - You dont understand Calvinism bro. God ordains your free decisions. Gods control is actually the basis of the free agency in men. If God didn’t sovereignty control it, it would be determined by antecedent materialistic factors.

For anyone who thinks Jesus returned in 70 A.D..... did you see Him return yourself or did someone tell you about this supposed return? Jesus Himself said in Matthew 24 vs 23-28 that if anyone has to tell about about it, then it wasn't Him. There's also no evidence that His return will be invisible (as partial preterism says), any more than lightning is invisible or the people who saw Christ ascend into Heaven 'saw' Him ascend invisibly (might as well try and divide by zero if you think you can make that last part work). Preterism dies on the hill of the dating of Revelation. Revelation could not have possibly been written before 70 A.D., which would have placed John's vision around the time or shortly after Paul was still writing his epistles to the church. Nero had no interest in exiling Christians but loved murdering them. Why would Peter and Paul die under Nero's reign while John didn't? Had Nero tried and failed to boil John alive in oil, his next choice would likely have been burning on a cross or beheading. And there's no evidence that John survived multiple attempts on his life immediately preceding his exile to Patmos. There was a celebration on Patmos in 1995 commemorating 1900 years (approximately, as in 95 or 96 A.D.) since the Revelation Jesus showed to John. The overall predominant view since the first century is that John was exiled under Domitian and survived into the time of Trajan. It wasn't until centuries after the original apostles had died that the minority pre-70 A.D. view came into being, which brings up a serious credibility issue with the Neronic dating. And what other events in the 1st century A.D. are ever claimed as taking place 2 or 3 decades earlier (or later, for that matter)? With all of the accurate records kept during the Roman Empire era and surviving today, there is little room for such a vast difference being feasible. It's commonly believed that Jesus died around 30 or 33 A.D., Paul and Peter were martyred in the 60's, Nero lived from 37-68 A.D., etc. No one says Jesus died in 3 A.D. or 60 A.D., or that Peter and Paul were martyred in the 30's A.D. or 90's A.D., or that Nero actually reigned around the time of Jesus' ministry as recorded in the Gospels. The majority of scholarship places John's writing of Revelation in the mid-90's, but somehow preterists think it's ok to switch this around by 3 decades? The great fire of Rome took place for nearly a week during 64 A.D., but no one places it in 62 A.D. let alone 34 A.D. A powerful earthquake in 60 A.D. devastated Laodicea. And yet it's never claimed that this earthquake took place in 30 A.D. 30 years prior. With the vast majority of evidence to the contrary, preterism literally rests on this single pillar of the Neronic dating of the book of Revelation. 2 Corinthians 3:7-11 and Hebrews 10:9-10 both clearly show that both the Old and New covenants could not have existed side-by-side. In Hebrews 7 we see how the priesthood was changed, and there was a change of the covenants with Christ (vs 12). The Mosaic law had long since finished by the time of the 2nd temple's destruction. Even Hebrews 8:13, which preterists love to quote, says the Mosaic law had already become obsolete so it's impossible for it to have still been 'growing obsolete' at the time of it's writing pre-70 A.D. Many Old Covenant saints came out of their graves for a short time after Jesus resurrected and appeared to a lot of people (Matthew 27). One could reasonably infer that they testified about who Christ is while they walked the earth again for a short time. Christ is the end of the Mosaic law for all who believe in Him. There was nothing left to still be in effect after the cross. The laws of purification were superseded by the Jesus' blood. There is no longer a requirement to stone those who don't celebrate the Friday night to Saturday night Sabbath. Those who celebrate the Jewish feasts and holidays are on equal footing with those who don't (Romans 14). What was left to still be in effect for about 40 years from the cross until 70 A.D. with the fall of Jerusalem? Sacrifices? Jesus was the last sacrifice, and there was nothing forgiven under the animal sacrifices that took place after the cross. To say otherwise is blasphemous to what He accomplished for us. The animal sacrifices after the cross until 70 A.D. were not authorized to forgive sin and were an insult to the cross. Remember Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 10 when they brought unauthorized sacrifices? They died horribly, by fire. No such thing took place after the cross. Why is that? It's because the Mosaic law was finished, and the New Covenant of grace was in effect and showing mercy to give them time to repent in Jerusalem before it fell. Had the Old Covenant somehow still been in effect, there would have been mass casualties at the temple since Jesus was the only way to forgiveness going forward. I don't think most partial preterists believe forgiveness actually took place under the Old Covenant system post-Calvary, as I consider them brothers and sisters in Christ with a wacky eschatology. ( this would be an ironic statement if it came from a dispensationalist--- so, no, I am not a dispensationalist. A common misconception is that to be a futurist the only option is dispensationalism instead of historic pre-millennialism). No real evidence for a pre-70 A.D. dating of Revelation, a position in diametric opposition to nearly 2000 years of overwhelming scholarly consensus of a post-70 A.D. writing, and no way for the Mosaic Law to exist alongside the New Covenant... A very, very shaky foundation indeed.

I don't understand how those who teach this stuff for a living can be so confused about this. The millennial reign is what was believed by the earliest Christian writers; unanimously. Amillenialism is not existent and that is important because the doctrines taught by the earliest writers were only two generations removed from the Apostles. But nevermind that, this is why grammar matters. The personal pronoun in 1 Cor 15:25 is not referring back to Jesus, it is referring back to the Father. Just go and read the Psalm 110, "sit at my right until I make your enemies your footstool." The I, being God the Father! I mean, this is rudimentary.
