ESP LTD EC 256 set up

This is the set up of Sean's ESP LTD EC-256. Too many numbers, not enough name but a nice light, slim single cut 'LP-style' guitar. Spoiled by a lousy nut and grinding tuners. In this set up I do a full set up - replacing the terrible plastic nut (set atop a mountain of glue) with an adjustable Tusq nut and fitting some new 19:1 Wilkinson tuners.

Working on adjusting the setup for my 256 today, and landed on this video - it's been so nice to just listen along while I work. Love your channel!

That's true Liam. Unfortunately the question appears to be "how much of the work to make this guitar playable can we offload to the customer before they stop buying them?" To be fair, it's always been some shade of this question and generally-speaking, the less demanding the customer becomes, the less delivering the manufacturer feels they need to be... For the 8+ years I've been doing this the view has been growing that they continue to do what they do only because customers continue to buy regardless of what they do.... From a hard-nosed 'maximise short term profit' capitalist position that makes sense. Why do something different if the evidence shows you're selling plenty of stock as-is??

Just finished practice and winding down now after work. Your videos are like guitarist ASMR. Happy birthday BTW! Also don’t worry about what the fret dust internet experts have to say. Those are the same people who will spend more time arguing over the tone difference of different tubes online instead of doing the best actual thing to improve tone and that is, obviously, practice… but be careful! If the fret dust gets into the pickups the guitar will EXPLODE!!! 😂

Hiya Sam - seem to be bingeing your latest videos last few days lol - makes for a nice distraction from the world :) Also, it refreshes all the things I've learned from them (and your book - plug plug) as haven't worked on any guitars for a few weeks now (I have plenty of them to work on but day job been priority - almost miss lockdown haha). You seem to be crazy busy these days, I'm pleased to see. Also glad to see you can still find time to relax in the hammock with Maurice and the cat gang. Anyway, going to enjoy the rest of this video and eat some fret dust as it appears to have magical properties 😂😂😂😂

Hi Martin - another one coming any minute now (Fender MIM Player Plus Tele - should have been called 'Player Minus Tele')... and in the immediate queue are a Dan Armstrong acrylic copy, a Jason Isbell Fender Tele plus a few more firming up as we go forwards...

@@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Haha, sounds like what was supposed to be a relatively slow paced lifestyle has become a roaring, busy success. A bit like my friend who retired from teaching after 30 years and retrained as an electrician. He planned on enjoying a gentler pace of life but he does such a good job, and reliable electricians are strangely hard to find post-Brexit, so he has been run off his feet with work. I don't even advertise that I can fix guitars and by word of mouth I still get 2 or 3 a month turning up. Maybe the UK needs those of us who are on the higher side of 50 years old after all?

Rhett Shull has a video where he took a guitar to his local trusted store/luthier for plek, filmed the process, and I do remember the luthier explaining why it was still ultimately down to operator interpretation and judgement (but the detail escapes me now). That might be useful info if you ever find time. Thought maybe the arrival of "Plek v2 ... now with ChatGPT" is coming over the horizon to automate the judgement aspect too! Your truss rod approach is still probably $100k cheaper, and doesn't seem any slower either!

@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Год назад
"Plek 2 with ChatGPT" :D Of course that version will be "Plek 2.0 AI" so the system will be $200k.

Very informative! Do you happen to know the model number of the adjustable Tusq nut for the ESP LTD EC-256? I have one of these guitars and would like to replace the nut.
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars 6 месяцев назад
Sorry for the late reply. There isn't a Tusq adjustable nut FOR this model; here I'm using the Tusq adjustable nut made specifically for the Gibson Les Paul 'Zero fret' system and modifying it with a 3D-printed base for use with other 3-aside Gibson-style headstock guitars such as this ESP.

Hey, if you would be kind enough to inform... How much should it cost for the service you did on a guitar just like this one EC-256 but only replacing the nut and the tunners? I live in Portugal and my guitars have never seen a luthier, have no clue if it is too expensive or not.

Hi my set up costs £135 plus return courier postage. Because my customers always want lowest possible action my set up always includes precision fret levelling. Some techs don’t make that part of their standard ‘set up’ so charges may vary quite a lot.

Of course, your name is Sam. It fits. Could it be anything else? I see you're in the UK, what is the address of your shop?! I haven't made a trip to England lately, but seeing you work on the Ltd, makes me yearn for you to set up my own recently acquired EC-256. I, too, have been curious about the Plek machine. I agree, the machine is only as good as the person operating it and the tech doing the work on the guitar afterwards. Great video. I enjoyed your running commentary.

@@rogerspalding5673 My workshop is on a Recycling Site so it's both difficult to find and - how shall I say - less than 'visitor-friendly' i.e. covered in permanent layers of dust etc.. But it's great for what I need. If you're ever back in the UK near the South West give me a shout if you want to drop by - home and workshop are in the Tavistock area of Devon... about 4hrs by car out of London so 'out in the countryside' you might say :)

Where can i buy the guitar nut?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Месяц назад
Late reply but I do offer a 'drop-in' nut to customers' precise specification but it's not cheap (because the Tusq part alone is close to £17 and the rest is precision sanding and measuring). Using this Tusq piece is also limited to white, 35mm e-to-e spacing and about 42mm width.

Did Sam give his opinion on whether or not he considered the Ltd to a good, or well made, guitar in general, and also considering its attractive retail price? It is not easy for a manufacturer to put out "perfect" guitars without the sales price being excessively expensive. After all, I don't begrudge ESP making a profit on its sales while keeping rigs like the Ltd EC-256 moderately priced.

On reflection, I don't remember this guitar being much / any different from a decent budget quality Les Paul style from any number of manufacturers (Vintage, Rally, Westfield, Harley Benton). I did like the belly carve... and the slightly different control arrangements. The point being that, being on a par with those other decent brands, this is a perfectly good Far East LP style guitar.

@@AnthonyGoombots Ah... but not everyone is attached to the 'true brands' :) This is a nice, slim single cut with volute and decent sounds... plus chambered. Not a bad instrument and certainly requires no more or less set up work than a Gibson or Epiphone.
