Uncover the geopolitical hotspots of the Horn of Africa, where Somaliland, Ethiopia, and the BRICS nations intertwine. Explore the intricacies of the Somaliland-Ethiopia alliance and its impact on global diplomacy. This gripping video dissects the complex web of rivalries, ambitions, and shifting alliances embroiling Somaliland, Ethiopia, BRICS nations, and global powers in a high-stakes game of regional influence and access to the strategic Red Sea.
Unravel the intricate layers as landlocked Ethiopia signs a deal with breakaway Somaliland for access to the Berbera port, stoking fury from Somalia which views it as a violation of its territorial sovereignty. Explore the complex colonial legacies, border disputes, and Ethiopia's pursuit of a maritime foothold after losing access to Eritrean ports. Witness how major powers like China, Russia, Egypt, UAE, and even Al-Shabab terrorist group stake conflicting positions, transforming the region into a geopolitical chessboard.
While providing a comprehensive overview, the video does not delve into the intricate historical roots of the Somali Civil War or the specifics of Somaliland's quest for independence. It does not scrutinize the legal frameworks governing territorial claims or dissect the feasibility of Ethiopia's proposed naval base.
The video steers clear of granular military analyses, avoiding assessment of naval capabilities or potential armed conflicts. It does not examine economic factors such as trade routes, resource contestations, or the financial viability of port operations.
Furthermore, the video refrains from delving into the internal political dynamics of involved nations, steering clear of domestic power struggles, ethnic tensions, or leadership transitions. It also does not provide in-depth cultural or societal context regarding the region's diverse populations.

UAE's port in Barbera should benefit from projected Rail Routes into Ethiopia, if they are distributed to West and South from Addis Ababa. The Belt and Road Project seems to be pointing at using some Ports that serve that side of Africa. It does appear to be a project that could benefit a lot of People.

We have to set the history straight here. I am a Somalilander and my country the State of Somaliland gained its independence from the United Kingdom on June 26, 1960 and received international recognition from 35 countries. 5 days later, July 1960 our leaders made an grave error in uniting with the trust italia-somalia. In fact the union was not legally binding hence somalia-italia was never ratified. The 5.7 million population of the Republic of Somaliland are now stivning to regain its independence. The republic of Somaliland is a peaceful and democratic country. We have nothing to do with Somalia which is a totally failed state. We are Somalilanders they are Somalians.

Somaliland was Anex with Somalia for 30 years( 1960-1991) . Somaliland isn't Somalia becouse Somaliland is the oldest country who have got independence way before somalia, kinia, Djabuti and ather 40 countries in Africa . How can an independence country be a part or region with another Country ??

Somaliland was a british protectorate that became the 17th African country to be granted full independence on June 26, 1960, but within days it was annexed by Somalia. However, after years of occupation marked by persecution and genocide, Somaliland reclaimed its sovereignty on May 18, 1991 based on its original boundaries at the time of independence.

Somalia was not recognised after the 10trusteeship. Somaliland, Djibouti, Somalia, Kilil5-Ethiopia and NFD-Kenya were ment to unite under the Union name Somali-Republic. 1july1960 the UN transfered Somalia's rights and responsibilities to the Somali-Republic. But this was an error against the intention of the Somali people... they could not unite. Because Somalia was already a property of the Somali-Republic. In 1965 Somali-Republic abandoned NFD-Kenya. In 1985 the Somali-Republic abandoned Kilil5-Ethiopia. In 1976 the Somali-Republic abandoned Djibouti in 1975. In 1991 Somaliland liberated it's territory from occupation... The Somali-Republic owns the territory of Somalia and the Somalia and that is why Somali cannot have a state Constitution. Somali-Republic claims all lands where Somali.is spoken. According to the UN the Somali-republic is the.legitimate authority that owns Somalia.

First: Somaliland needs official independence and recognition, it appears to have been managing itself as a de-facto independent state for a long time. It obviously has no historical, cultural or political connections with Somalia, (unlike Taiwan does to China, or eastern Ukraine does to Russia). It should be able to make independent sovereign deals, and giving access to a port doesn't threaten the other neighbouring countries but enhances development of the whole region. Eritrea says no port access, and Djibouti charges way too much - and Somaliland obviously thinks its a fair deal, financial investment and shares in an airline etc. Just give them independence, just some paperwork FFS...

When the military government in Somalia collapsed, in 1991, two Somali regions were occupied by a group called the SNM, which attacked and massacred and forcibly occupied the western region of Awdal, which is the region that Somaliland and Ethiopia agreed its see. SNM created a flag and government that does not exist in the land it claimed and called Somaliland, they created a new history that did not exist before, which is false, in 2007 they invaded and occupied the Sool region, without any consideration. not giving to the will of the people, for 33 years they were looking for recognition, they were not wanted, in the regions where they had control, they killed a lot of people, finally on 25/ 8/ 2023 the local people organized themselves and expelled them, the same year in the region A group of people started organizing to get rid of Somaliland. Sanaag East did not have it before, when Somaliland lost the majority of the people and the regions and their wishes, it voluntarily entered into an agreement with Ethiopia to give them, the sea, and Ethopia put pressure this regions and people, especially, Sool , Sanaag region, Awadal region region, in addition to that it will give Ethiopia its own recognation. the region and the sea that Ethiopia and Somaliland have entered into the agreement, there is no need for anything called Somaliland, there is a rebellion against it, Somaliland is in Hargeisa and not It is an all-inclusive administration, is one tribe, which were seeking self-recognition during the collapse of Somalia

Small correction there. Ethiopia 🇪🇹 were never Italian colony. It was just a brief invasion of fascist Italy. Just as German's invasion of France or Japan's invasion of China during ww2. Not even a effective occupation as the entire west of Ethiopian Highlands were practically unreachable by the Italian. Other than that a very well articulated presentation.

Somalia can't stand by herself without somaliland people. As we will often remind you, it was, in the past, an independent country, fully recognised by the international community, including the UN. But this halcyon period lasted less than a week. On 26 June 1960, the former Protectorate of Somaliland became fully independent from British rule, its independence recognised by 35 countries around the world, including the US. The next day, its new legislature passed a law approving a union with the south. On 1 July, Somalia became independent from Italy, and the two were joined together. It is a decision Somaliland has regretted almost ever since.

Respecting the Universal declarations and the IHL, Somaliland has the right to self determination Somaliland and Ethiopia are expected the MoU will overcome the existing obstacles including geopolitical challenges to the red sea and the neighboring tense, and hopped that the Lease deal will be binding UN has completely dismissed the self determination act which is the core of the IHL. They have historically ignored the existence of Somaliland. In the counters listed below, let me remind you that there is a legal provision that guarantees Somaliland to have a sovereignty and territorial integrity. Arising from this meeting was the Cairo Declaration, which declared that 'all member states pledge themselves to respect the borders existing on their achievement of national independence'. 47 Somalia and Morocco resisted the Resolution, but it was adopted by the OAU as a whole. In accordance with the above mentioned legal provision and the current situation in horn of Africa, Somaliland has the right to self determination. Somaliland is not a new country, it existed before Somaliland and it get independence as the state of Somaliland on 26/06/1960. The country reclaimed its sovereignty through lawful liberation by the SNM freedom fighters who handed the rule over to the civilians after liberating the country. Somaliland is geographically and geographically important and it’s a key to Red to sea and gulf of Berbera.

The tensions within Somaliland society escalated as Barre’s long reign continued. Since independence, Somalia and Somaliland’s leaders have tended to favour members of their own clans and subclans with patronage. There are six main Somali clans, with dozens of subclans. The vast majority of those living in what is now Somaliland come from various branches of the Isaaq clan. The south is more heterogeneous. Barre may have espoused a doctrine of “scientific socialism”, a fusion of terrible governance ideas imported from China, North Korea and Nasserite Egypt, but he was not above ethnic nationalism, privileging his own Darod clan, which added to the resentment of the northern Isaaqs.

So why has Somaliland been more successful and stable than its southern neighbour, even with virtually no assistance from the international community? The fact that is is largely populated by only one clan has helped it avoid tribal conflicts, unlike some other countries in the region. Most Somalilanders also point to the role of clan elders. In addition to a president and a traditional elected parliament, Somaliland has an unelected upper house of elders, somewhat similar to Britain’s House of Lords, which has a consultative role on certain legislation and is entrusted with settling disputes between the country’s subclans. “It’s the elders who really made this peace,” Mohamed Omar Hagi, a UK-based Somali activist, told me. Somaliland has also been lucky to benefit from the leadership of a few individuals, most notably the country’s most prominent global advocate, Edna Adan. The most famous person in the country, she is generally just referred to in Somaliland as Edna. “We don’t have a George Clooney,” one local journalist told me, referring to the Hollywood star’s advocacy on behalf of South Sudan’s independence

Difficulties emerged almost immediately, and just a year after independence, voters in the north rejected a new constitution. The marriage was off to a rocky start. Things would go from bad to worse in 1969 when an officers’ coup brought a general named Siad Barre to power.

Somalia was the only country in 1960 that was not recognized from other countries either , July 1, which was called independent day, was not actually but day of reunification with neighboring Somaliland which was opposed to their independence 4 days ago.

What would happen,If Ethiopia blocked the three rivers reaching Somalia? The answer is clear. There would n't be the so called Somalia. They want to take water from Ethiopia for free, but don't want to share their resources. What a selfish people. As an Ethiopian,I ask Ethiopian government to think about constructing big dams and use its resource inland.

Ethiopia required a sea outlet and signed a deal for it. It is as simple as that. Ethiopia is no longer divided enough for a bilateral deal to become multilateral. Both are not against Ethiopia getting a port, they are using this opportunity to settle long lasting disputes.

Borama town was a sister to one of British towns. We never heard Samaroon, the most learned somali tribe who inherited from britain how to run the public office, praising british , nor they're willing to substitute their somali identity to that of ousted colonial powers. You were not part of those tribes who waged war against the colony.

During the 1980s, with support for Barre and his harsh military regime eroding, a primarily Isaaq northern rebel group known (somewhat misleadingly), as the Somali National Movement (SNM) emerged to challenge rule from Mogadishu. The crackdowns that followed simply added to the perception that the north was a region under occupation. This culminated in an all-out civil war between the SNM and the central government in the late 80s, during which thousands were killed and millions fled. On 18 May 1991, the SNM proclaimed that the region was re-establishing its independence, severing its ties to the south, and would now be known as the Republic of Somaliland. The world, for the most part, shrugged. The slow and steady process of state formation in the north would be almost entirely overshadowed in the international media by the chaos engulfing the south, particularly after an international intervention two years later led to the infamous “Black Hawk down” incident and the killing of 19 American troops during the battle of Mogadishu.

Just by looking at the map it is safe to say Ethiopia just like Bolivia was deliberately and unfairly denied access to the sea by colonialists and by only few kilometers of land...I can see why any Ethiopian should resent why their country of over 125 million being landlocked and being at a mercy of tiny Djibouti or Eritrea !!

@@akiim1532Its clear Ethiopia was not colonized but all the neighboring countries were blocking aceess to the sea one of the strategies colonialists were using to surrender Ethiopia which they didnt succeed. Cooperation is better than war. Egypt has no cause to support Somalia other than planning to start proxy war with Ethiopia.

There was recently a big fight between Somaliland and Somalia over the control of airspace which resulted the intervention of UN ACUA and transfer of air traffic management to them after being withdrawn from Somalia who abused the system an caused disruption in an attempt to hinder flights to Somaliland but in vain.
