We are doing some EV car camping in Lake Louise! I drove from Edmonton to Lake Louise via Jasper. I checked out all the charging locations along the way and have a hot meal before sleeping in the Kona for the night.

Would love to come back to Canada again , was all over the country including the Rockies . How are you finding charging now? Here in Scotland every month theirs more electric cars but no more chargers so it's getting tricky. Especially as I have old leaf 30. Been thinking about a Kona like yours as replacement and use as camper car :) how do you like it? 120v outlets for free? Is that common?

Hi, nice to see you having fun on a road trip 😊. Two quick questions: did you just the utility mode when you were sleeping? And is your car equipped with a one or three phase onboard charger? I was wondering About this when your car was charging at 3kW. My 2019 Kona EV has a one phase onboard charger and this has created some issues for me. Like for instance, at work, we can charge at around 7.2kW. But as my car can only handle one phase, it's limited at 3.6kW... Have you ever had this situation?

I've been watching your videos since I've got my Kona one year ago. you are talking about the "high" temperature that may slow down the charge. what do you call this again? and also with the EVOBD2 device, what battery temperature will usually cause a slow charge? twice (once on Petro-Canada and once on an Ivy station in Ontario), I've got a slow charge... it started around 45kW but dropped to 34kW. I've stopped the charge and restart again and usually it goes back to 45... but when this happens, I usually do not get anything higher than 45kW. also when leaving the charger, I see battery heals using some power (0.4kW) for a few minutes while driving. does this mean the battery was too hot to charge at full power?

I haven't seen this myself but from what I heard through other Kona owners, the thermal throttling temp for the Kona's battery is 50C. It is definitely possible to reach this temp when charging fast in really hot summer weather. Charging speed depends on both SoC and temp. Under ideal conditions when the Kona is plugged into a fast enough charger, from 0-55% SoC, the charging speed is 75kW. Between 55% to 74% the charging speed is around 57kW. As soon as the SoC reaches 72-76%, the charging speed will drop to 35kW. When SoC reaches 80%, charging speed drops to 24kW. I'm wondering if the charging speed reduction is caused by SoC instead of battery temp. I do notice that if I unplug and replug at SoC over 74%, the charging speed will briefly reach close to 50kW and then immediately drop to what it is supposed to be.

@@READYSTEADYCHARGE thank you for your answer. I’ve seen charging power of 34kW below 60% SoC. It might be the charging station that was throttling itself because I’m sure battery temperature was below 50°C… it was probably around 35°C.

Just got my Kona 3 months back and have finally reached 1000 miles. Have read some forums which suggest changing the oil due to metal shavings etc. Do you have any recommendation on this or have heard of it ?

Solomon and I have been talking about this exact issue. We believe it's probably better to take preventative action to replace the oil before the metal shaving issue (however small of a likelihood), becomes a big impact problem.
