Same thing happens to us. We are a 50 yr old Mechanical Company. And since all of these DIY shows have gotten popular. Everybody thinks they’re a HVAC company. Crappy Installs, no workmanship and that’s why we get beat out of Jobs. Then the Customers suffer!
Great video like always! Jeff, when is it better to change the Air Handler rather than changing coil only? Are coils covered under ten year warranty? Thanks
If the unit was registered then you get 10 years. Different manufacturers have different policies though. If it’s out of warranty, (over 10 years) I’d say offer the customer options on replacement and also give them the price to just change just coil. Let them make the decision. But if the AHU is older than 15 years old, strongly suggest AHU replacement.
@@JeffsHVACAdventures Your feedback is greatly appreciated and I follow your advise as you are a very credible resource for homeowners. I have learned allot form your videos on how to do preventive maintenance and the things to look for. Congratulations on your channel and the work you do for the community. HV
Not sure. York does all kinds of weird stuff. Kenny knows how to prepare copper. He does most of the cutting, sanding, swaging. I even let him braze some fittings too when we have time.
You earned a subscription just curios are you licensed for PA Jeff. I am in Chester county which is about an hour to an hour and half from the cheasapeak If so when I am ready maybe you can do my Mr cool install. Which would replace a comfort pac crappy hack job install and the comfort pac replaced a true in wall split system Armstrong from 1990. They did not size the comfort pac correctly at all. As my usable space is 1200 hundred square feet so 18k btu is grossly undersized for cooling also a return was never installed.
Thanks for the sub! No that’s out of my service territory. But if you need any advice or have any questions feel free to email me jeffshvacadventures@gmail.com
Thanks again Jeff I will email you there and send you some photos and by the way I live close to the Delaware border. And I did get a, quete from a company out of Delaware that does PA. But maybe if I email you you will know where to get micselionios parts for my rebadged gree. As I need 20 Phillips head screws I can't find at Lowes or home depot and I need a new plastic knockout cover for the air handler where the breaker would go. And busted the attachment piece for the 60 Amp circuit breaker. But I still need to get an hvac guy to install it. But I will send you pictures with descriptions and what the wiring set up is that is in my hvac closet again thanks.
Great video as always Jeff. York probably had the decline when the Irish company took over. Ya know, too many hangovers to do the job properly. And I’d really like to know how to ready Yorks sn. Being able to tell the tonnage and stuff. I know all manufacturers are different.
So the newer serial numbers like this one, the second and forth number is the year. So like W2L1 is 2021. The older owls that start with 4 letters, you have to use the chart here www.usair-eng.com/Serialnumber.pdf
Yorks were good back in the late 1970s and even in the 1980s and 1990s and was named and made in York Pennsylvania. But in 2005 got sold to Johnson controls an Irish company and I think that's when the issues really started. Too much faulty stuff these days with hvac companies. Even carrier is not like they were in the 1980s and 1990s same with Lennox and trane. And honestly I still don't understand why big bulky old school condenser units are still bieng sold so much when side discharge units with inverter technology with air handlers are the way to go. And yes York has jumped on that bandwagon too. But honestly they are not that good. And ohh I figured out this weekend that Mr cool universals are basically rebadged gree flex units. As I took apart the covers on my condenser and saw the compressor said gree on it. I got tipped off after I watched an install Video of a gree flex 6 months ago and just happened to look exactly like mine. So Jeff if you come across Mr cool universals and need parts gree will have them. Still need to figure out if the Mr cool mini splits are rebadged gree ones too. And keep an eye out on the pioneer ones not sure if they are rebadged or rebranded grees too. Anyway you are a good tech.
Thanks. Yea your right about York. Their products really took a dip in the mid 2000s. Even had that class action lawsuit against when they had that horrible blue evap coil. Thanks for the info on the rebadged Gree equipment. Will definitely keep an eye out. 🤙
@@JeffsHVACAdventures your welcome Mr cool is pushing to much diy. And people have called in to complain but with Mr cool universals they are pushing what they call quick connect no vac linesets that come precharged with nitrogen Which they also use in thier mini splits. The problem is they tell people to use actual soapy water. To do the leak test and if no bubbles are present just release the refrigerent we all know as I know from a car ac system as soon as it is exposed to air you need to put it under a vacaum. Also if you encounter a Mr cool air handler and someone complains, I am hearing a scrapping noise that's because Mr cool did not properly balance the blower wheel assembly on the air handler. I watched a guy in a video call into Mr cool and complain they sent him out a whole blower wheel assembly with the fan motor, but it had the same issue but he figured out to check the blower wheel before putting new fan motor and blower wheel in to balance the wheel properly. Ohh and hvac guys video or Curtis's channel helped me figure it out as I had ordered a mr cool universal 3ton but I have not had it installed yet. And considered a gree flex but I could not afford the extra 700 dollars then just happened to 6 months ago come across his video saturday spent installing gree flex 3 ton at my house and was shocked, when I saw his video and was like hey that looks exactly like mine with the air handler and condenser, but did not get around until this past Saturday taking the covers off of my condenser then I rewatched the install videos he did one for his house and one for a custumer and every part was the same as mine even the boards done to the led or lcd that says on with the dip switches that enable 2 or 3 ton mode on the condenser and air handlers. So as another hvac guy with a channel said parts might be an issue with Mr cool. Well guess what if you look closely enough you will figure out if Mr cool can't get it just call gree and they will probably have the part you need or a gree distributer.. And he likes diakin fits or vrv I don't like them because they are to proprietary With thermostats same with high end tranes and Lennox units. I like inverter technology but not proprietary stuff with thermostats and air handlers. Anyway with mr cool mini splits if you see green corrosion on the linesets and someone calls and says mine is not cooling or stopped working at least you will know the why it's happening and know what to do to get them up and running again. Either way you are a good tech
Ohh Jeff keep an eye out for any mini split calls where you get there and see excess linesets coiled up instead of bieng cut properly to fit and reflared properly Mr cool is telling them coil it up but other mini split companies are telling people to do the same thing. And then wonder why it stops working and gets green corrosion. On the linesets. I mean a little excess won't hurt but come on 2 feet 5 feet of excess. I know because that's becoming a big issue that hvac techs are encountering. And with general contractors doing that same type of stuff. Instead of just paying the extra to at least have a good hvac guy install them. And I am bringing it up because I this video you demonstrate what happens when someone goes with the cheapesr bidder VS just having you do it. With that crappy ductwork. While they can pay you to fix it. When the next issue happens but you need to at least tell them hey the ductwork and install was not done correctly and quete them to fix it.
Yeah, my relative had a 20 year old York at his house. York made some good equipment in the 80’s. I priced a York system for a customer back in the 80’s. The equipment cost about the same as Trane. I stopped using that supply house because they always quoted high prices.
@@picklerix6162 York made good equipment in the 1970s too I remember when I was a kid the blue colored big ones too. Like when I used to go down to hilton head and stay at a resort there and the clubhouse building had 2 big blue ones that were still running 15 years later and the resort itself had a whole bunch of Yorks on top of the building that were still running. And my late grandmother had Yorks put in on a house she moved to in 1987 and they were still running with no issue when she died in 2002. I also know that carriers were good too in the early 1990s. But have also gone downhill in recent years. It's seems like quality has just gone downhill for the American companies but York is not even an American company anymore and Niether is Goodman. And I think quality has just gone downhill in general for a lot of hvac equipment. And by the way I have no problem with aluminum instead of copper but come on you still need quality control.
