The Irish Guy takes a look at the biggest bottle-job from every European league for the 22/23 season, including the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. Business enquiries: irishguybusiness@gmail.com
For Serie A, I would say Spezia. They were outside the relegation zone all season, then finished level on points with Verona conceding a last minute pen to Roma on matchday 38, with only 2 wins since mid January. They lost 3-1 in a relegation playoff to Verona missing a penalty to get relegated.
Dortmund is lost and has no real leadership anymore. The power vacuum of leadership that was sucked out when Klopp left was never replaced and most likely never will. Become too much about money
I love how, for Serie A, he chose Udinese (a team who usually doesn't aim for the top, at least not since Di Natale retired), because the league's traditional bottler (Napoli) was literally the only team that was constantly on top from start to finish
I was about to write that, i was so damn proud of them in the fall with them being my local team and then they got so terrible and got relegated? They got like 1 point in the last few matches and crashed down so badly against Cracovia? That was just so damn painful to watch. Still a huge honorable mention to Lechia Gdańsk here too
How have you ignored Ajax in the Eredivisie? Had their worst season in years and finished 3rd by the skin of their teeth. Their downfall needs to be studied alot more than it is right now
Feyenoord are incredible though. The way they play. The win runs in the league. The goals they score. How strong the defense was compared to Ajax. Even in the Europa league they were smashing teams by 7 goals. The fact that Roma won 4-1 against them is a testament to how great jose still is actually
Nah isnt much to it, their board are greedy monsters who did everything possible to guarantee they wouldnt win the title. Screwed over their new manager, screwed over Antony, didn't work ahead of time to find solid replacements for the players they knew by april weren't going to be there next season, and then made sure to rip out Schreuder before the season was even half way over and somehow expected to still finish with the title in hand
@@brandonayong5823 The last part is a bit difficult to say. Since alot of that came down to the comeback & lights out pace that some of my fellow Feyenoord supporters have actually mentioned they have themselves in the Eredivisie. (Basically being a club that really makes their comeback late into the last 20 minutes or so this season. Even having comebacks from 1-0 scorelines down in the first half). I think most of it came down to their hopes also having gone massively up with an equalizer (which would've won them the game) until they dropped the ball in extra time & pretty much got outpaced. Not so much an insane easy 4-1 defeat as it was a breakdown in extra time.
@@somethingwithultra7231True they did hold on but you would think a team that is having such a great season would cope better with extra time mentally. They totally collapsed
@@brandonayong5823 Yeah I love it when Serie A does this. The idea that you can genuinely go from Champions League to not even having European football by losing just *one* game is amazing
At the beginning, I thought: if that was bad for you, imagine for Italian fans. 4 teams representing Italy were in a final in the span of 12 days and EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. THEM. lost
Tony Bloom's Union bottling the Belgian league title on the final day deserves a mention. All they needed was to beat a horrible Brugge team at home and instead they lost 1-3. The ending of that season was mental in general, with 3 teams going for the title on the final day
Listen man, as a Dortmund fan, I saw this coming, I saw times where the guys were leading Bayern by 15 clear points with 5 games remaining and somehow allowed Bayern to overthrow them to win the title. So yea, I saw this bottle job coming because I was sweating when I saw they had one match, only one match to win to clinch the title, but there you go
As a Porto fan, we in the first half of the season were bad to our standards in the league, but in the second half of the season only lost against Gil Vicente, we came from 10 points behind Benfica to fighting until the last day, in the champions league we underachieved, and we recovered by winning the Portuguese cup. That said if we had a better first half of the season we would win every trophy in Portugal for sure
We had the final set. We were two goals up against Tigres in the final leg only to concede two in the second half and lose it in ET
We were sky high too we had shut out tigers at their home stadium and beat Club America in the Azteca and was leading 2-0 at HOME AND WE FUCKING BLEW IT
In the Eredivisie a team that would be well within the top 10 teams financially got relegated dead last, with 18 points total and an entire 4 wins this season. (Also a side fact, 3/4 clubs in the Eredivisie that come from the North of the country got relegated this season) there are only 2 straight relegations / 1 play offs relegation (which Fc Emmen lost and thus got relegated)
The funny thing about this season's Portuguese league is that Benfica almost had the biggest bottle job in Europe. Cause remember that in March they were 10 points above second place Porto. The title was over at that point, and it looked like Benfica would win the title with 3 or 4 games to go, but no, they almost bottled it and had to wait until the final day to win it. If they had lost it, it would have been a bigger bottle job than Dortmund.
credit goes to antwerp though, they just came out of nowhere and finished first in what seemed like a 2 horse race that they weren't included in, respect.
Daily Potter News: Enzo Maresca of Man City, Kjetil Knutsen of Bodo Glint & Brendan Rodgers have joined Potter in the race for the celtic Job. This is going to be interesting to see who will be the next Celtic manager since all of these managers play attacking style of football which suits the current set of players left by Ange Postecoglou (with Potterball being the best). Hopefully wherever Potter goes next he can have better luck than he did at Chelsea. Bad luck, uninpsired players and bad signings caused the demise of Potters reign as Chelsea boss.
Potter would be woeful for Celtic. The man ruins strikers if he even has any. Rodgers or Knutsen should be the next Celtic manager. Hope you also know Potter has no chance of the job and has only been thrown in by the bookies. Celtic representatives have flown to Mallorca to speak to Mr. Rodgers.
Arsenal should have been in it till the end. They bottled it so hard city rested players for last 2 weeks and lost final day and yet finished ahead of top of the league for 93% of the season
A Nigerian footballer who was top scorer in Malta’s league named his daughter Destiny - and she became the island’s best ever singer and a major star at Eurovision at both levels!
I love Michael's videos already but he should do more about the other main leagues And I didn't expect Udinese at all 😅 I think Spezia fits much more, especially after their latest performances (kinda weird how they won at home against MILAN but then everything went downhill) and the relegation playoff
Who else remembers when Irish guy called Jack Grealish a City bottle job and said Rice will amount to nothing. My favourite is when he said Ireland will be major threats in Euro 28!
England - Everton... again, they could have made history by getting relegated from the Premier league for the first time but bottled it yet again against Brighton + Bournemouth....
As an AEK fan I was waiting for Panathinaikos to be mentioned. Our team played excellent attacking football, only for Panathinaikos to scrape 1-0 boring wins every match. Luckily we won it in the final match, also completing the double after winning the cup final playing with 10 men from the 6th minute.
"Boring 1-0 wins". Dude, you are AEK. Boring draws are in your DNA ever since your creation. Olympiakos and Panathinaikos' injuries won you the League more than you deserved it.
@@WERTYUIO821 I'm talking about this season, im not in position to talk about our entire history. And this season Panathinaikos played well till he scored, afterwards was dropping back to secure the win and if something happened in the attack then so be it. Olympiakos never challenged for the title, bad season for them
@@user-qq1sm4io9g Olympiakos never challenged the League. But they gave you the League when they defeated Panathinaikos. Panathinaikos played without their star striker since January because of his season ending injury. Would you expect them to attack 90/90 after that?
@@WERTYUIO821 you know nothing about this club ...put some respect in AEK's name ....been bad a few seasons and yall trying yo persuade ppl that draws are in our dna 🤡
@@zakr2186 I know more than you Mr. "ZakR21". I have friends that support Aek since before you were born. They will say the same because they know the history of your club. I am not going to "put respect in a team's name" because people like you don't even know their own history.
Arsenal cannot be labelled bottlejobs. As a Liverpool fan I have to say we were the biggest bottlejobs of the league. Beating Manchester United 7-0 and then losing 1-0 to Bournemouth is what bottlejobs do.
Other honourable mention: Dynamo Kyiv for Ukraine. They were the only Ukrainian top team who hadn't lost all their best players after Russian invasion, and they were considered absolute favourites at the start of the season. Shakhtar literally had to reassemble their team from the scratch, nobody thought they had a chance. Instead, Dynamo ended up finishing fourth after a horrible season
I actually reckon Dundee United would probably have been a better shout for the Scottish Premiership bottlejob than Hearts, last season they finished 4th in the league and started this season by beating AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the conference league qualifiers, only to then lose 7-0 in the second leg, follow that up with a 9-0 defeat to Celtic at home and ended up relegated, a year after they finished in 4th.
As an Arsenal fan, I will admit we did bottle it a bit but it’s harsh to say we were the biggest bottlers as I can think of a few teams that bottled it more than us in the Premier League
I’d say spurs were probably at the same level of bottling it as arsenal, they were in the top 4 race until February then imploded to not even get conference league
@@sirsporox4954 Nah, it was clear with Spurs they weren't playing well from the outset and were just getting scraping results. You have to be in the position to win it in order to bottle. Which Spurs never were. Arsenal were dominating the league all season and then collapsed with two awful results against relegation fodder. That there is proper bottling.
I think what went wrong with our season is our players had to play too many games this season. Carlo had the same tactic running for about 70% of the season. When we did end up changing it worked for a bit like 4-5 matches and then it stopped again. What Inter did against City the other day in the UCL was what we should’ve done in the Semis at Etihad. Instead we were scared to even pass it around. We lost our footing before the WC and it ultimately lead to everything else. Hopefully we have a better 23/24
In the A-League, it’s Melbourne City (club owned by CFG). Winning the Premiership just to be smashed 6-1 by the Central Coast Mariners in the Grand Final. Horrid.
Chicago fire are one of the biggest bottlers. cannot keep ahold a lead for over 5 minutes and also haven't won a league game since 18th of may. they looked promising at the begining of the season (To the point that they were considered to be playoffs candidates) when they didn't lose many games, mostly drawing but since beating Asutin in the cup they havent won a singl game.
12:57 In our defense, the whole team had covid and the League forced us to play a game that we of course lost... . It was the last game of the season. +Our star striker got injured at the middle of the season.
@@user-qq1sm4io9g Sporar? Sporar wasn't Panathinaikos star striker and he wasn't injured. Aitor Contalapiedra was. At the start of the season he played up front and scored in every game. Without him Panathinaikos was a different team.
@@WERTYUIO821 yeah you're right, I totally forgot about Aitor since he hasn't played since probably late November. He would have had an amazing impact on your team, probably you would have won the league
@@user-qq1sm4io9g Yeah, because we were only wins when he was playing. +Half season was November because of the World Cup. 13 games only 1 draw until November. 13 games afterwards 7 wins, 3 loses and 3 draws Play offs 4 wins, 5 draws and 1 loss. It wasn't only that it was an injury, he was injured for 7+ months meaning he was out for the season. We were unfortunately ducked... .
Honorable Mention: SV Hamburger (II Bundesliga). It looked inevitable that they would be promoted, but they bottled automatic promotion and lost the playoffs to Heidenheim.
As a hearts fan 100% correct we shouldn’t have not come 3rd but perfect mixture of us collapsing and Aberdeen getting form and results at the right time caused us to finish 4th. Also small note, Jorge grant is not pronounced like the it would be if he was Spanish. He’s English (his previous club was Peterborough) and is pronounced as if it was George. Not nitpicking cause I found it funny being said like that, just thought I’d let you know you
For La Liga I would go with Girona, they were really good.. but only against the strongest teams. They had a place in european cup by taking points from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sociedad and Osasuna, just to give it all away in games against worse teams.
I would say milan have been major bottlers this season, I’m a milan fan the first part of 2023 was so painful to watch, I wanted to bleach my eyes and we only got top four because of shady Juve business, not to mention sacking maldini
For LaLiga, i would pick Villarreal bc they had the chances to qualify for Champions League, but knowing Real Sociedad, it wouldn’t be too fair. No, Girona gets it worse. They had all the chances to qualify for Conference League featuring a demolishing Castellanos guy, but that loss against Villarreal at home ended everything
FCSB and Farul Constanța in Romania, FCSB spend a lot of money (for romanian standards) for them to finish 2nd in the league of the 8th* time, meanwhile Farul is heavily relying on its academy players and smart, cheap signings
Should of mentioned Chvas from liga MX. At the start they were underestimated that they will have a mediocre season then they end up in 3rd and beating national rivals America away 1-3. To end up going up 2-0 with 30 minutes to Tigres at home in the final to ending up bottling it in extra time to lose 2-3
Surely Fiorentina deserve a shout for Italy's biggest bottlers since they lost two finals in the space of two weeks, missing their chance to end a 22-year trophy drought, and missing out on European competitions next season on top of that.
Panathinaikos run was hilarious to watch as an Olympiacos fan :D We robbed them of their title with an amazing 1-0 win at home collecting lots of tears.
Turkey’s bottlejob would have been Fenerbahce, if Besiktas won their final game of the season. Fener were in the title race all season(finished 2nd). If Besiktas won they would have finished 3rd and doing a Spurs 🤣
I'd disagree with Udinese, it is true they were in European positions earlier in the season but that was never their goal - would have been nice, sure, but the team was really not ready to take that step. But it has been a very positive season, they showed they have some good players (Samardzic, Lovric, Bijol) that they will bank upon (Udinese's style) and I think Sottil is class. A more fitting Serie A's bottlers team would be Spezia, they had some massive results against bigger teams (Milan and Inter) and had a comfortable lead from 18th Verona, but they ended up same points as them and throwing in the bin all the points, played the playout and got embarrassed. Roma *cough* and Atalanta could be better contenders for bottlers as well
Nah. Atalanta had never quite the squad for top 4 and roma went to the Europa league final and they don't have squad depth for 2 competitions especially with Dybala and wijnaldum injured. Juventus are the true bottlers. Uninspiring in the league and absolutely disgraceful in the CL group stage
@@brandonayong5823 right, forgot to say Juventus because of how shallow they were, however without the deduction they would be top 4 so I can't be too hard on them - Spezia are still my pick for Serie A's bottlers
Portuguese league = sporting. The only thing they did this year was beat arsenal . That’s is. They finished 4th behind braga. No trophy’s. embarrassing losses and draws against most teams. Idk just what I see
As a Fenerbahçe fan super league bottlers should be us. If we beat giresunspor a club which got relegated we would be top of the leage by 8 points but we finished the season 8 points behind galatasaray
honestly though, valladolid were robbed of the points they needed to survive by the officials in la liga, banged in a late winner, but the ref blew the whistle WHILE THE BALL WAS TRAVELLING INTO THE NET and the goal didnt count. fine margins, but the refs relegated valladolid
Thanks for pointing out how much of a failure this season was for Madrid. They ALWAYS get a pass in the media. When they sign tons of players, in England its 'buying the league'but in Spain its 'history'. When they lose in la liga suddenly its 'they only care about UCL'.. then they get knocked out of UCL and the narrarive shifts once more.
My Opinion Premier League:Arsenal La Liga:I don't know maybye valencia real valvoid or espanyol Serie A:Spezia Bundesliga:Dortmund Ligue 1:Auxerre Other mentions Hartlepool Panithinaikos Reading Milwall Chesterfield Ajax
