Was it confirmed that it's legally distinct enough somewhere, or is that just a reasonable conclusion we came to? Still funny to think about either way
And it was never really in an Easter egg role or anything, its always been pretty prominent. The one I was surprised by was the Scrapper breaking theme, I'm amazed I missed it for so long.
5:17 fun fact 8 is the only one who can hear this, when they heard the inkantation the first time it got so implanted into their brain that they hallucinate it in the deepsea metro
13:02 the rondo singing ebb and flow sounds both silly, terrifying and, in context, a little sweet? singing its favorite song by its creator, if a bit broken because it was never meant to.
Yeah!! me too for sure!! theres something really special about all the music in these games cause its so central to alot of it. it makes my heart swell... seeing it layed out like this is so so great to look back on!!
5:26 some quick lore on the calamari inkanation: It's an ancient folksong that came from fishing communities who used it to give thanks for the bounty of the sea. The squid sister's songs from S1 are all actually covers of old folk songs but done in a more modern style for the time. The song is incredibly culturally important to the inklings, which is why the scroll says it "might as well be" written into the DNA of inklings (note: the song is not *literally in their DNA*, it is a metaphor about how popular and well-known it is)
Considering what happened in Alterna...I think it goes even further back. In the credits after beating Hero Mode 3, you can hear real human chants of the Inkantation, which implies two things: - The song originated from humans, which emphasises just how powerful it is - It might _literally_ be in their DNA
@@SnoFitzroyanother fun little anecdote: one of splatoon 1's sunken scrolls does show off a human skeleton with a wii u and a wiimote/pro controller setup that is only used for splatoon, which means that splatoon as a video game is canon in splatoon this is why i like to believe that calamari inkantation is in a bootstrap paradox, due to the fact that calamari inkantation is a cover of the folk song, whose melody was ingrained in those liquid crystals, from humanity, which in turn got it from splatoon 1, whiched used the calamari inkantation, which is a cover of the folk song, and so on
ok I hate to be that person but there is actually one more calamari inkantation reference!! it plays in the Splatoon 3 player make tune, but only when you're editing the smallfry. which is very interesting, and I love it
It being only when you edit smallfry implies that it’s the reason why smallfry is on your side… Now I’m imagining neo 3 just playing the song when like walking around and smallfry becoming friendly after hearing it…
Oddly enough, there are some leitmotifs in the Alterna tracks, Dead Sea has part of city of color and Sudden Depth has a part that sounds similar to the Octo motif, suggesting that these songs are directly inspired by the work of Alternans
There's more ones ✨️ -There's a different version of the song shellfie in the the new stages and gears trailer. -We can here big man's chorus in now or never. -the demo version of clickbait in the return to the mammalians trailer. - demo version of C-side's splattack in the first splatoon 3 trailer. - Uotaro's demo of Paintscraper. - and I'm pretty sure Incoming got refrenced in other themes.
I think that the blaster (Luna) blast when it doesn't touch enemies and/or the floors/walls sounds like the drums from Splattack! (Jam Session) and the Splatoon 1 Boot Screen.
You forgot a few. In the cutscene where Neo 3 gets launched into space, you can hear the main theme from Depth do us Part. The Alterna level clear jingle references Hide and Sleek, and the Alterna boss jingle references Smeared Canvas.
There's something quite unnerving about the side order bosses singing warped versions of Marina's songs, but i suppose that's what effect 'Order' had on them. Thanks for putting these together!
I wonder… if you played shooting starfish to an octoling, would they go back to living under the oppression of octoling society? Edit: for those who aren't aware, this isn't a serious question, it's just a joke about the reversed calamari inkantation vocals in the song
Every song in this franchise gives me goosebumps and pulls something from deep in me, and I picked up the franchise in the middle of Splatoon 2’s life. I love this stupid ink game
honestly maybe it should've been named that considering Octavio's whole wasabi stick thingy, but naming it that might have weird implications so, Calamari 3MIX it is
Happy Little Workers appears in a few places, with Smallfry being able to sing it after defeating Mr. Grizz, and it also appearing prominently in Bear With Me and the theme that plays during the Spirit Lifter's launch.
I was just about to reply to this comment saying “yep, this was correct!” but you were quicker lol So cool they teased the halftime song in side order!
@@OctoArtist I know! Nintendo does such a great job in both the making of their music as well as how these tracks correlate to other in-game things! It's so amazing!
one reason i love splatoon so much is its music and usage of music. i love how many recurring themes and leitmotifs are in the game its really fun and can signify stuff as well theyve always put so much care into it and i love it
I noticed that at 15:04 you can hear calamari inkantation slowed in the background on what I think is deep piano? ALSO in the foyer music, when the room gets darker and there's that 20 sided dice (apparently) in the middle of the floor, if you go in it you'll hear the melody of Short Order. It only lasts while you're inside the dice; a good way to stay in for longer is with splatling's booyah bomb. Ive also heard that Short Order itself references color pulse? Not completely sold on that one, though. A very good video nonetheless!
Something else, at 7:17 the thing that isn't the singing or the city of color mix is from the S2 hero mode trailer! you can hear it most clearly at the end of the trailer. might be from onward motif but idts
You forgot the salmonid cover of anarchy splatcast theme. Also the grizzco theme which plays in grizzco, in salmon run intros, at the mr grizz boss, and during the rocket launch sequence. Also every version of now or never (theres like 9 if you count the concerts)
Thanks for making this. I love Leitmotifs so much, especially in Splatoon. Btw you can actually hear a little bit of the song Kraken Up in Unconscience.
Isn't that literally just the intro of 3's campaign, even got the whole ass Inkopolis Plaza, Splatoon 3 might as well be Splatoon 1, only thing you're missing is the actual Splatoon 1 experience, no hairstyles, no pants, just pure rock and my bois Hightide Era which definitely deserve to come back
Thanks for uploading this! The leitmotifs in splatoon have always been really fascinating and clever to me. Also, I tried not to cry hearing side order’s soundtrack again in this video ngl This is totally unrelated, but I wonder if the song at 19:39 has an origin. Like, who’s singing? Is it deep cut on a day where their voices were lost? Is it a couple of deep cut fans trying to do a cover? Whatever it is, I bet it’s funny
Yayy thanks for compiling all of these together, even including all of the smaller references too! Shooting starfish is a confusing case since it likely samples Maritime Memory's sample of City of Color + Calamari Inkantation (as you correctly displayed in the video) Only missing ones I can think of at the moment are the rocket track / mission complete references, and 'Surprise & Shine' sampling Anarchy Rainbow (or at least Big Man's drums, and his whistle [in phase 3 only]) This one is purely something my ear picked up so don't take it too seriously: Smeared Canvas **possibly** samples one of Fins in the Air's keyboards [There's a keyboard sound that runs up and down in FITA's chorus (NOT the intro keyboard) that's similar to the keyboard runs you hear in the last 8 bars of Smeared Canvas (base version only, so not first-class). I'm very sure its the same instrument, but on the fence on if it is or if it could even be considered a motif since its such a minor thing. Deep Cut's tracks like reusing instruments under different mixing, but this one would be an exception since the instrument also plays the same pattern of notes. Similarly, the very last bar of Smeared Canvas **possibly** includes a differently mixed version of Depth Do Us Part's intro, it would make sense if these two battle tracks were sampled together.]
all of dedf1sh’s leitmotifs just make me so sad 😭 #0 shell, because they felt like they were a shell of themselves. #0.1 style, because they arent a shell anymore. #12 awake, because they thought after being sanitized they can finally focus on their music, #12.2 awakened, because they woke up after being sanitized. dont even get me started on #8 regret because acht means eight in german, what if they regret being sanitized so they named that track after themselves with feelings of regret 💔 god they make me so sad i love them so much
I'd like to add that there's a guitar in Ebb & Flow (Out of Order) that sounds a LOT like Now or Never from Splatoon 1. It plays right after the chorus.
This is one of my favorite things in music, i just love when motifs repeat in other songs (yes i like undertale music) Also the first secteion made me mad nostalgic 😢

i’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for the hyper bomb sound effects and i find them here 😭😭😭 very glad i finally found them btw the transitions into other songs are so nice to listen to 🫶 this entire video is beautiful
Wait, what about the Grizzco Industries theme and all the times it shows up? If you plan to include that later, you can add a note at the Alterna Space Station saying that it is implied that Mr. Grizz adapted the tune that plays there into Happy Little Workers. Also, it's extremely well-hidden, but my friend pointed out yesterday that the music that plays in the elevator in Side Order, at least for the first twenty floors is yet another arrangement of the Onward motif! My mind was blown! X D
iirc in Side Order, Pearl's jingle when everyone's in front of the tower talking (A Changless World is playing) right before she poses plays the start of Acid Hues
um, Seep and Destroy contains Calamari Inkantation, idk if it was intended to, but there's a scale up then down that sounds awfully similar to the Inkantation
there’s two you misssd: in maritime memory you can hear sheldon’s shop theme, and in un conscience you can hear some noises sampled from octo expansion level music. (the little “ye e a a a” things after marina is done talking)
Something i recently noticed is the beginning for anarchy splatcast and the beginning for big betrayal sound similar, big betrayal just being faster to match the tempo of that song
While it doesn't have it in the actual song, I find Side Order's end credits being named after Splatoon's most common motif to be a very touching sendoff. It all comes full circle, huh?
splatoon 1 - city of color splatoon 2 - color pulse splatoon 3 - anarchy rainbow each groups main songs during the splatfests all mention colors in some way
the intro to fly octopus fly is actually a leitmotif from spicy calamari inkantation! It's faint but it plays during the chorus after the first verse! (well that's what I hear 😭)
