I can't decide if this boss loses a bit of it's original fear factor when you notice Marina is just smiling and having a good time the entire fight, or gains some more because it's still so uncannily her.
I think it takes fear away. Imagine just how much freakier this boss would be if she looked distressed or upset during the attack. Even Callie didn’t smile during her brainwashing. This whole dlc was so underwhelming and not scary at all, the trailer made us get our hopes up that the game would be thrilling and almost horror-like, but the actual dlc was so unremarkable. Sad
Maybe she was so brainwashed that she isn’t even trying to fight it? If she were..aware that she was brainwashed and trying to break free of control, she wouldn’t be happy about it. So maybe she is so far under control that she isn’t trying to break free, she’s just enjoying it in some creepy way…?
I don’t agree at all. Keep in mind that ORDER WAS CONTROLLING HER. She may have a smile but it isn’t her. I’d argue it’s creepy as hell. Also side order was good imo, loved this
Seeing Marina Agitando blind at 3am after pulling an all nighter for the DLC release was an experience I'll never forget. I'm still not over it or the implications of Parallel Canon.
After some research turns out that's her default mouth expression due that marina and pearl use the classic way of mouth group models instead of using bones for moving the mouth dynamically
@@gentlemoon2606 and it's probably the most evidence we have that Nintendo could just make a horror game if they wanted to. *_Seriously, the stuff I'm still finding out about splatoon, Christ._*
If I had a nickel for everytime someone in splatoon was mind controlled and had an Ice cream looking thing on them. I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
literally could not stop pointing out how much she slayed for the rest of my side order playthrough because like????? I literally don't even have words???? She's raised the bar way too high now no idol will ever be able to serve as much as marina did
I am head over heels with this boss after reading a translation of the Side Order interview; Marina was literally unconscious when composing this song, one where she sounds like she's agonizing over the anxieties she has, and on the surface she appears delighted to not having to worry about change anymore. Smollusk was a part of her, and it in turn possessed her. She literally got into her own head.
Thank you for this, I’ve been wanting just a video of Marina’s animations during the fight. Just something about the beat and when she moves her hands is so crazy Also Eight just getting their ass beat in the corner is so fucking funny
It’s interesting that her mouth doesn’t move with the words, sort of like she isn’t singing and it’s kind of a voice echoing in her mind? Maybe it’s because the dancing is timed based on her attacks instead of the music. It’s also interesting that she’s smiling, like she enjoys being under mind control?
Order stated that it was using her/her body as a vessel to operate the memverse with, so that's actually Order who's doing the smiling and posing during the fight. Makes it even creepier, tbh; the AI using its own creator to take over the minds of others with...
Nah, the Marina Agitando version of her model is really really big (probably so you can see her under all the stuff going on); it shrinks back to normal when she's freed
I always wanted to see Marina’s movements during the fight, but getting chased by the jelletons ain’t doing it justice for me to do that during the battle.😅 But now that I can with this video, I could appreciate the details they put into her posing for the different attacks she does! Edit: After having another rewatch, I JUST NOW realized that even the lights on the rails carrying the memory cubes in the background, are also flashing to the beat of the music! They didn’t even need to do that, but they did anyways, even if it goes unnoticed in normal gameplay!
She's is uncannily smiling and enjoying it while being mind controlled, she twists and pokes the parts of the organic machinery like heart to the beat of the music to attack and summon jellatons, and once defeated you can see her panic. The thing that marina was controlled by was the virtual boy? That she is wearing.
I believe Order was using her as a host at this point, so it might not have been here performing those actions but instead Order. (She's also deprived of sight and sound, so she could be under the illusion of performing at a concert. It'd certainly match up with the movements she makes when attacking.) The battle music sounds like a cry for help, starting quietly but then singing with more force, trying to break free and reach out to her friends, knowing they're trying to free her. It's so cool. X3
it was the first thing I noticed tbh. When I walked in and saw she was the boss fight I was like "fuck you nintendo" then I saw she was a giant and was like "oh wait it's not...actually her?" and then you beat it and it is just literally her. great music and fun fight but i didn't like where they took the story lol
I don't care how repetitive it would've been, the dlc would've been WAY cooler if they stuck with marina being a boos for longer, but not seem like she's fully mind controlled. Like, have her have some kinda dialogue or talking that is just barely off, but antagonistic for her. Like this looked so much cooler than order's boss imo.
@@mystrenula3911 I feel like it could've been a chance to do the whole "evil idol" concept a lot better than how it was executed in Splatoon 2. How it is now is basically the same in the sense that the idols being evil doesn't really amount to anything. They were just captured by the real antagonists.
My initial reaction to this was "My God, what have they done to you?!" Doesn't even matter who 'they' are, because Marina doesn't deserve anything bad.
A thing I only just realised is that marina is wearing her final splatfest outfit from Splatoon 2 which makes sense since it's order who is controlling her
Just realized you can in the background, during the start, you can very quietly hear the yelling you'd hear from octarians during the beginning of splatoon 2 bossfights
I've been waiting for a video like this!!! Also the fact that in some shots you can see Eight in the bottom left corner getting the crap out of them by a jelleton😂😂😂
Some people say it's less scary because she's smiling, and I say it's creepier. Marina is being fully controlled, not just brainwashed. Her movements are jerky and pixelated, but are normal when she's freed (she also expresses how distressed she was once she's free). Marina's being held in place by a giant pulsating tentacle and you can hear her sing about how "it's just so natural". But then at points she gets loud, like she's trying to cry out! The lines "Aaah the pain!" and "keep dancing on the floor" are clear as this is what Order was all about. I interprate S.O. as a kind of psychological horror. It's all about sanity and suppressing memories to fit into the norm. The message is about embracing the chaos and color in life because even though it can give you bad experiences, you can also get beautiful rainbows with those colors, too. Marina created this scape to help sanitized octolings, but Order wanted to use it to reprogram them. It's super creepy mixed with the zombie imagery. I think some people don't think it's scary because they might not be really considering the implications. They see the sterile, orderly mask over the freaky reality, very symbolic.
Poor 8 getting mobbed in the corner why Pearl is looking quite respectfully at her pulsating friend. Side note this sorta reminds me of how Darcy was created in Amphibia.
The way her voice sounds in the first half reminded me of cats on mars in such a good way! Except that song is pure insanity, and this song is way badass :D
