Honestly, Helldivers 2 feels like a Parody of Live Service games. It's 40$ and you can get everything by playing the game, not 70$ and asking you to pay more money to enjoy it.

Phil is absolutely a master of navigating the 4 or so audiences he's beholden to (general gamers, hardcore Xbox fans, his bosses at Microsoft, and shareholders) every time he makes an appearance like this. It’s almost like the internet doesn’t know its ass from a hole in the ground.

My guess has always been that games that are published by "Xbox Games Studios" will be exclusive (Xbox/Pc). But games that are published under Bethesda or Blizzard's name for example may go to PS5 since these were multiplat publishers to begin with.

My 2007 Falcon chipset has survived the RRoD era and I have a backlog of like 200 games, I play modern stuff on Steam.

It's like the structure for movie distribution. Release them in theaters, then DVD and streaming, and finally TV. No matter how they do this it's just going to push people onto other platforms where exclusivity emphasized more.

My absurd takeaway from this: When do they release Xbox branded PCs with Xbox branded versions of Windows 11? Or maybe even Xbox branded PC parts that glow green(Not sure Nvidia would appreciate this is they go with AMD) for easy upgrades in the future. I've never been an Xbox guy, but I'd appreciate if they sold Bundles/Sets for unenthusiastic builders. Especially if they came with a reduced price just to keep the Xbox name alive and in homes.

This also isn't the first time Xbox has done this, it took years but they brought over Cuphead to Switch and PS and brought Ori and The Blind Forrest and Will of the Wisps onto Switch. So it makes sense for them to try it again.

They absolutely will consider doing this with more games if done well, but I really highly doubt it'll ever be larger flagship games that they know are important for the Microsoft brand, that would cause buyers to jump ship from Microsoft devices to then get a Playstation if it means getting both companies games, where as these smaller titles would not cause something like that, especially If they are only going over after a year or years later

The most amazing part about this is I never heard about an Xbox personal problem recently. I'm not on any social media. I only watched the news.

Regardless of personal opinions on the details, I appreciate MS's candidness in communication these days. There's obviously some "corpo" language in there, but the overall rationale and how it was communicated felt pragmatic and earnest. That's already on top of the fact that they decided to have a rapid-response, community-targeted, 20+ minute podcast from leadership directly addressing all of this after rumors started erupting. I'm on board for the future of Xbox specifically because of that kind of behavior. Playstation has also since commented that they see advantages in selling across platforms, which many have interpreted as potentially meaning PS games would start launching on PC at the same time in the future. At what point does that become PS games on Xbox hardware? I think consoles are just hardware now; Sony and MS are competing in software and subscriptions.

As an Xbox owner, I can’t imagine ever being one because of Xbox’s exclusives. It’s a pretty sad list. Game Pass is the biggest current advantage.

The fanboy bias so many people have in these comments is so embarrassing to see, aint nothing wrong with having a preference or being critical about a platform, but when your only doing that for 1 platform as a trend and ignoring anything done by others that similarly would effect those values you act like you hold is just sad.

Honestly I'm down to try some Xbox games, that being said they just need better exclusives for people to want an xbox... But off the top, if hi fi rush came over to PS5 that's a day 1 buy for me.

I don't think gamepass will ever come to Playstation. Because it would mean people would get games way way cheaper than in the Playstation store. Same reason why steam is not on Playstation. I also don't think they will bring their best games to Playstation. They will bring games that are good, but don't have a large enough player base. They need to keep their best games exclusives

In my opinion, lots of previous gen Xbox owners are happy enough with PC to forego a series X/S. Xbox games however are already on PC, so PS/Nintendo is the natural place for them to go to reach more people. It’s just more jarring because Xbox games on a PlayStation! But Sony has already been putting their first party games on a Microsoft platform for years.

Hifi rush would be a great switch game. Xbox already doesn’t run on a single platform… gamepass alone is on Xbox,pc, rog, android. And it can be played on steam deck, meta q3, iPad and phone just not through a dedicated app yet, and apparently the Vision Pro if you’re one of three people who aren’t content creators who own one. From how they phrased it, games that have been on the platform long enough is gonna get multiplatformed. I’m curious if what he meant from that is that Xbox games will come to other platforms after 1 year. Meaning 1 year exclusivity.

I kinda think it's 2 things that's having Xbox go in this direction. Firstly, you've got the Bethesda and Blizz-Act acquisitions, especially with the blizz-act one all eyes on are Xbox/Microsoft, especially competition market regulators/authorities as they stopped the acquisition and had to do their own checks (I think they halted it twice), they control a significant amount of the market for actual games being produced now, so I definitely think this drive away from exclusivity is being driven by that as they fear their going to get accused of monopolising the industry so this move, albeit slowly, is going to try appease those accusations. Secondly, with the success of the gamepass, and from this podcast, the next gen xbox is probably going to use the game pass as the reason to buy an Xbox rather than exclusivities (Think Xbox one television television television E3 conference). Because they really have so much they can put in the game pass now and although with this direction they're going it's no longer going to be an xbox "Exclusive" if you have gamepass you can get it "Day one", not have to fork up the $70 price of games now and can have such a wealth of choice of what to play.

I feel like there could be a legal case made that "Day 1" is false advertising or a breach of some kind. It doesn't matter what you call it. If they're selling the game to the masses, THAT'S the launch, THAT'S Day 1. A Rose by any other name.

9:24 I think Xbox basically admitting defeat means gamepass will never come to PS. The only reason Sony would sacrifice game sales would be if they were behind and it seems pretty clear thatll never happen at least not when it comes to console sales. PS would make their own version of gamepass long before they let Xbox gamepass undercut them on their own storefront

I know Xbox is testing the waters by having a limited number of games be non-exclusive because they recognize that such games aren't going to be system sellers, but I'm genuinely shocked that Starfield and Indiana Jones are not among this list (yet). Starfield did nothing to move the needle when it came to purchases of Xbox consoles, and I foresee a similar effect for Indiana Jones, not because it's going to be a flop like Starfield, but because it's not big enough of a game to have a meaningful impact on console sales for Xbox. Gone are the days where Xbox was able to trot out Halo as a system seller and be competitive. With Xbox now cash poor from buying up so many studios, they need a quick injection of cash wherever they can get it. Putting their exclusives on Playstation for a quick buck seems like the logical play for them.

Halo Infinite coming to PS5 would be cool, but it would feel like a bit of a waste to not include the Master Chief Collection. I'd like to experience the story from the very beginning, not on a PC of course.

Everyone has to be responsible for their own politics so no judgment, but I don't really understand the idealistic tendency I see in the gaming community to see things like capitalism, profit maximization, and job cuts (actually just reallocation of human work) as such bad things. Do people really want for people's work and energies not to be put to best use according to what people actually want in their roles as consumers? I don't expect to convince anyone with this kind of argument, but the reality remains that we collectively consume and invest out of what we collectively produce. If have wasteful excess production of video games and video game investment, wouldn't we want all that human talent to contribute more meaningfully to what is collectively produced and from which we benefit?

Phil Spencer said he doesn’t understand how anyone benefits from Helldivers 2 being exclusive. He has said many times that there is no benefit to restrict games to a single platform yet says Xbox will keep exclusives. He believes exclusives will be gone in the years to come and is hinting that Xbox strategy is moving towards publishing games. This is why people don’t trust their PR shenanigans anymore. What xbox may not be seeing is that Sony exists mostly because of exclusives. If Sony does not have exclusives, what do they have? Sony will always have exclusives, unless, Xbox tries to force them into submission by keeping certain titles from them. If Sony has exclusives and Xbox doesn’t it’s a simple decision to switch. Phil said the “FOUR games” going to PlayStation will not be Starfield. Listen to the verbiage, the FOUR games will go to PlayStation and then other games will follow if the blueprint is successful. Xbox has already made up their mind and are just trying to soften the blow. Anyone in their right mind knows they will profit from this and keep doing it in the future. Xbox has been propping up their strategy for a long time and saying they are going to deliver amazing games but it feels more and more like they are starting to cry wolf. Everyone thought those big acquisitions were because of exclusives but it seems it’s actually the opposite. After all this, Xbox owners miss out on Helldivers 2 which could be a game of the year contender if the servers get corrected. What a kick in the nads.

I think it's good, if you want to develop on Xbox you can now make and assumption that if you go exclusive on Xbox, you can say hey I'll probably be able to brin my game multiplate. Sony wont do that for me if I go exclusive with them.

I havent not bought a single console since 360 and PS3 era and I am extremely happy with that decision. Theres no reason to buy these consoles, the exclusives are few and nothing interesting, the consoles themselves are lackluster in performance and features. Its been a shock and a half to see people scramble to get these hunks of plastic as desperately as they have. Marketing really is the most important thing when making video games it seems.

Having so many studios doesn’t make financial sense if everything goes straight to game pass. Specially after activision came on board. They actually have to sell games no memberships. This is a pivot, obviously they weren’t going to go all out now. An announcement like that would have made investors nervous.

they're just kicking the can down the road. don't be surprised if they don't make a new console after this generation and they do go multi platform. they probably pulled back because of the outrage but they won't have to be held to that if they don't make a new console generation. but it's not like they have any true exclusives since they release all of their games on pc. they've been heading into that direction even before the current generation

Just like HELLDIVERS 2 isn't going to Xbox, HALO INFINITE isn't going to playstation. They will keep those games as flagship IPs (well Helldivers isn't but since it became so popular they won't let go of it). I think for now we shouldn't speculate anything because some people actually believe what all of you guys (youtubers, journalists, influencers etc) as facts even when it's just your opinions. 😅

A simple Tweet would've cleared a lot of the confusion up. All Phil had to say was that they have no plans to bring Starfield and other games over. However, he didn't and still hasn't. He said that there are just these 4 games. However that could easily PR speak that translates to these are the 4 games that are currently in development. I believe that once MS gets used to taste of that mulitiplat money, that will run with it for the quicker ROI.

Phil is barely keeping this sinking ship afloat.
