I love that they cast Ashley Johnson, AKA Ellie from the original games, as Ellie's mother Anna in the flashback. Ashley and Bella look so similar, that you'd swear that they were related in real life.

Ashley Johnson's ex, Brian Foster, became an abusive jerkface over the last few years (which coincides with his firing from Critical Role a while back), and recently Ashley filed a restraining order against him. Idk much about Brian, but apparently he's been battling with addiction and it's been suggested that the Covid pandemic might have made him relapse and completely unravel. In one instance, Brian was escorted from Ashley's home and he had a bag with weapons in it, such as a garrote which is used for strangling.

Possibly projecting, I got the true transition into being an adult, where the understanding of lies being a necessary evil are apparently a thing as well as so many other things... she understands the lie, she isn't happy with it but accepts it as a dark truth and burden she and he have to carry

6:36 You're NOT supposed to enjoy Joel's rampage though, at least not in the same way we'd all enjoy watching John Wick kill 37 dudes with a pistol and a pencil. What we're seeing is a tired damaged man who's survived 20 years in a fungal apocalypse, sacrificing everyone and everything through pure disassociation and ruthless determination to save the person that essentially brought him back to life. He doesn't care in the moment if they have a gun in their hands, a scapel, or nothing. They're just obstacles between him and Ellie. Not to mention the tragic and hauntingly beautiful music playing in the background from the GOAT Gustavo Santaolalla furthering that. What we see in this scene is a father sacrificing his soul to save his heart.

Thank you! Part of what made the last of us (1) so beautiful is that Joel isn't necessarily a good person and the inner conflict he has is so real. I remember I sometimes had a hard time killing people when playing the game because some of the enemies were just people trying to survive. And having to choose between someone you view as a daughter and (maybe) saving the world is an impossible choice to make. (Objectively there is a morally superior choice but that is not the point.)

They lied about the procedure and the entire story is about how they lead Ellie to believe they could cure everyone, but don't ever mention that they've tried several times before with no results for it. That is not a mixed message here, that is a straight up lie to get consent.

Parents completely understand Joel’s decision. If I had to chose between my kid and the rest of the world, I would burn the entire world to the ground before I’d ever let anyone get near my kid. That protector instinct that parents have is a powerful thing.

Absolutely! Joel is not a good person. He was a good person once, a loving father and a caring brother, but losing his daughter, living in the world where people constantly need to adapt, where killing or being killed becomes business as usual definitely changed him. I've always interpreted this ending as a "Joel is doing bad things for the right reason" situation. Also, he is still carrying the trauma of not being able to save his daughter from one soldier, so when he comes close to losing another girl, a girl whom he grew to consider a daughter, Joel is moving heaven and earth to protect Ellie. I think that the story shows us that in that brutal world people who are 100% honest, good and honourable don't necessarily make it.

The final sin- maybe it’s just me but in game and show, I genuinely don’t think she believes him. There’s a hint of disappointment as if she’s knows he’s lying but simultaneously can’t confront it for fear of losing her new family. For me, THAT is what makes this ending so great

The fact they didn't ask Ellie makes me side with Joel. If they had asked her, she might have said go ahead, and then Joel would have to decide if he's going to respect her wishes or not...then again don't know if he would believe she gave the go ahead second hand...this is why you sign a consent form before surgery.

I live in Austin, Texas, there are tons of hills here, they actually called Hill country. I was shocked when I moved here too, I thought Texas was gonna be super flat, but if they lived in the Austin area, he could’ve definitely hiked a ton with his daughter in Texas.

OMG I hate the end every time I see it and this is the option I picked. JUST TELL HER THE TRUTH. The Doctors had no proof or evidence what they were going to do would remotely work, their belief doesn't match up to you being attacked when the zombies should ignore you, and they had no plan of testing anything beyond murdering Elle. Hell, best option would be to argue with the Fireflies to let Elle choose after she hears both sides. She can side with Joel, they get mad, weapons are drawn, ending fight trying to get out of the building with a half sedated Elle in toe. End game carrier her to safety, pan around to show Joel was shot at least 1 in the back. Now you have the bait for game 2 being if Joel even lived.

I love your mention to GuMo NP. It’s a highly underrated park. Big Bend also has some decent hills, but GuMo boasts a reintroduced elk herd that roams the Bowl, a pine savannah nestled among the peaks that tower over the Chihuahua Desert. Highly recommend. Also, pack twice as much water as you think you need.

Couldn’t she have lied and told him that they were performing a procedure that Ellie would recover from, for example taking a bone marrow transplant to replicate the antibodies in her blood, and then pretend that she’d died due to complications?

The idea of this happening at all is HIGHLY questionable. First off, there's the first do no harm oath. No matter what the potential benefit, no medical professional would EVER end a person's life for a maybe cure. Then there's the question of consent. Ellie is a CHILD. Even if she WERE given a choice (which is a whole other issue) she is not old enough to make an informed decision here. They just spring this lie on them immediately. Ellie and Joel are given NO time to decompress, to come down from all that adrenaline, and just be safe for a while. These doctors SHOULD have told them the truth straight away. Let them sit on it. Let them take all the time they needed to come to terms with it, even if that meant waiting YEARS for Ellie's decision. And if her decision was no, let them go peacefully. You can't save humanity by sacrificing humanity.
