I'm sure Alphys is happy to finally have her own episode! Let me know if you learnt something new, whether you enjoyed this video, and if you did, what character you'd like me to explore next! If you particularly enjoyed this episode, please like the Reddit post! www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/65qbs5/everything_you_didnt_already_know_about_dr_alphys/
You know, when I first saw Papyrus, I was thinking "Oh, that's going to get old REALLY fast." Next thing I know, I've got a grin the size of his whenever he appears. My spaghetti pal forever!
Alphys tells Frisk to kill Asgore. Alphys loves Undyne. If Undyne is alive at the end of a neutral route, she will get to rule the Underground. Totally not evil.
At 7:20, I don't want to criticize but, "A Boss Monster's SOUL is strong enough to persist after death... If only for a few moments." - Inscriptions on the walls in Waterfall. Which would indicate a human can absorb a boss monsters soul, if done quickly.
Along with this, it seems that ghosts, due to not having a normal body, can physically become just their soul in order to properly possess things Although not even flowey can absorb their souls so it seems that ghosts are very incorporeal, down to the soul
Just something I'm curious about. I know by heart every single leitmotif in Undertale, I've seen every. single. music. sheet. I promise, I have. I've even written something entirely based on Undertale's leitmotif.(Which turned out to be my first real encounter with Internet hate and controversy, go look up why the Underswap soundtrack is wrong, you'll see why) and I'm even looking up both the music sheets of Battle Against A True Hero and Alphys right now. I can play both songs on the piano, I have both music sheets and I even made a personal arrangement of BAATH (mostly the chords though) and I can guarantee that, while the two have parts that sound alike, they do not share a leitmotif. BAATH is in F minor (4 flats at the key), Alphys is in F major (1 flat at the key) and while yes, scales and major/minor keys are not the determining factors of a leitmotif, they play a great part in it. A leitmotif is a reoccurring melody used to make an emotional connection in different places of a musical work. For example, Alphys' motif plays during 'Here We Are' because it's her lab and it's where she hides her most regretful mistakes. Scales are important as in a scale determines where the half and full intervals will be. In a natural scale (no alteration) the half intervals are between the notes E and F, B and C, hence why there are no little black keys on a keyboard between those notes. In the F major scale, the intervals are between E and F, A and Bb, because the B is flat. In the F minor scale, the intervals are between C and Db, G and Ab. When transposing a melody, you need to make sure the intervals are at the same place. If you play Do Ré Mi in F major, then transpose it in F minor, it will become C Db Eb, in Ab major (major equivalent of F minor) It will become Eb F G. Also the beat. While the duration of the notes may vary, they will always stay the same. In Alphys, the song is in 3/4 and Here We Are is in 5/4. Those are the time signatures. The melody in Alphys goes quarter note, quarter note, eighth note eighth note doted half note. (3/4 note) In Here We Are, the melody goes 1/2 note, 1/2 note, 1/4 note 1/4 note, whole note legato (two notes tied together, played like there's only one note) with 1/4 note. Basically, the value is doubled. In Alphys, the second part is only made of eighth notes. There is nowhere in Battle Against A True Hero where there are only eighth notes, even if it's in 4/4 and the values could be changed, nowhere in the song is it only one type of note. The beginning goes doted 1/8 note (X4) 1/8 note (X2) and it goes on like that. In the last part, it goes, 1/8 note(X6) 1/4 note, 1/8 note (X4) 1/2 note (X4) and that is a time pattern that isn't seen anywhere in Alphys. So no, those two songs don't share a leitmotif. I only covered the theory with the beat, but I didn't cover the intervals between notes. Though, if you apply what theory I just left in this comment to try and connect both songs, it's not gonna work. Sorry Underlab, though I hope I taught you something new! (I'm always a nerd when it comes to music, and theory in particular)
That was amazing, can you link you thkng about underswap soundtrack? Music is one of the most important things to me, though my knowledge is more emotional then technical, this was fascinating
There's a sign in Undertale somewhere, where it says Boss Monsters souls are the only monster souls strong enough to live after death for a few moments and then humans could absorb them, so Frisk could absorb a boss monster's soul. I believe when you defeat Omega Flowey, he loses all the souls he absorbed, including Asgore's soul, which you end up absorbing.
I have some info to defend Alphys with the whole "you must kill asgore to escape the barrier" thing: I think what she said actually is true and I have a reason for this. (this is just my opinion and I don't want to insult Underlab or the brilliant videos he makes! he is one of my favourite youtubers this is just my own opinion!) As we know, a human cannot absorb a monsters soul but remember in waterfall on one of the signs it explains that a 'boss monsters' soul is just strong enough to persist after death, if only for a few moments. Frisk would have been able to take asgore's soul if only flowey didn't but in. In this case, Alphys would have been telling the truth for that certain fact. Now about the barrier. I've seen many theories that in the neutral run, when frisk crosses the barrier, they actually die. If frisk didn't have a monster soul with them then they wouldn't of been able to leave so, it's a theory that they actually died when they tried to cross the barrier. Sans called them but they didn't pick up, could that possibly be because they are dead? There isn't any evidence that they actually survived crossing the barrier so this could be what happened to frisk in the neutral run. thoughts?
Alphys is definitely my favorite character.Undyne is a close second. I defiantly relate to her too I'm a introvert with crippling anxiety that loves anime. She is defiantly one of the most interesting characters in undertale. Also alphys and undyne being together is amazing.
one thing that drives me crazy is when people say Mettaton is a girl. one person who does that is my friend and when i say something like "then why in the game do they say its a boy? i have the game you don't." then he says "well Toby Fox made a mistake" and when i say "how do you possibly think he made a mistake without telling anyone or why in general do you think Mettaton is a girl?" and wana know what he says? "he weres pink" "you know that there is a lot of boys that we know who likes pink" "he wore a dress." "THATS ONE THING THAT MAKES IT FUNNY" "well then why do people ship Mettaton with Papyrus?" "THAT A FRICKIN SHIP PEOPLE DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT WHEN THEY SHIP!!!" then he walks away i know this is topic but i just thought about it XD nice video i love Alphys :3
@Abduuul We aren't talking about pacifist, we're talking about neutral ending when you fight omega flowey. In that ending, Asgore's soul is destroyed, not taken, and there is no evidence that you actually make it out. Pacifist and Neutral are not the same thing, and it seems much more likely that in Neutral you get stuck in a state of Limbo after Omega Flowey alters reality and the rules of the game itself. The calls also don't prove that you're on the surface, just that the monsters can't find you, and your lack of answering makes it all the more likely you are not on the surface at all. The video itself even confirms that 1. to our knowledge humans can't absorb monster souls and 2. in the neutral ending the soul of Asgore is destroyed, but then still says that the human goes free of the underground which is what I'm saying is unlikely. Listen to what the monsters say when they call you, and it clearly seems to imply that they've reached voice mail or in some way cannot reach you.
Well humans can absorb a boss monster soul if they do it fast enough but on A second thought we see Asgore's soul breaking and Frisk is just a child so i doubt he knows how to absorb a soul
Flowey, you are an @$$. Besides, it already happened. And to everyone's favorite, Sans, as well. The sad thing is, everyone LOVES Sans, so the outcry from fans will eventually cause him to come back from the dead. But Dr. Alphys? She's gonna stay dead forever, because nobody loves her... (This is about GlitchTale, for those of you who don't know) I honestly couldn't give a darn about Sans. But Alphys had more heart to her character than anyone. It's honestly just not fair...
You know what, I'm glad I'm a monthly patreon! It's worth paying you (even if it's only monthly 1 dollar, I can't afford more at the moment...). Such cool theory! :) I'm starting to think you might be Alphys's brother actually. That's right. Alphys has a brother, the brother is Monster Kid, therefore Underlab is Monster Kid. And Underlab is a grown up Monster Kid, hence the grown up voice in the video. Underluminati confirmed! Monster Kid, you are a genius! Thank you.
Alphys is one of my top 5 UT characters actually. Tbh, I'm basically real life Alphys, but I'm not lesbian (I'm straight) and I don't like anime. I did many regretful things that I never wanted to share but eventually did thanks to friends' help.
How about doing an episode on how much 1HP is in real life because Undertale is a strange game that pretty much makes its own rules also I have a estimation of it being the force of a punch
5:15 Waw that would be awesome! Also I don't know why you haven't talked yet about Sans and Alphys did know each other before the pasicift ending, they seemed to be good friends too...
"And Battle Against a True Hero." JakobTheQuizGuy might have something to say about that. He tested it extensively and it doesn't match. They just sound similar.
Am I the only one who got so happy when Tokyo Mew Mew came up?😂 I grew up on this show And I kind of figured that Mew Mew Kissy Cutie was inspired by it haha
Alphys is my fav character -.- Also, from that outro, I imagine myself making a short about Alphys getting multi-layer cake, thinking of the amalgamates, and getting really stressed out around the other monsters. Heh, if only I could animate v-v
Garnet Cookley I'm thinking that You become more like Chara during the Genocide run, (The "Where Are The Knives" quote in the Ruins and that you aren't allowed to go farther when you miss monsters on the Genocide run). I don't really like the "Chara is good" theory since there's a lot of things that disprove the theory.
Biggest Nerd In History okay but have you heard the theory? its not just "what if chara was good" there's a lot more to it than that. the theory addresses all of that stuff. the video is on judgement boy's channel if you haven't seen it
In the neutral route, it does not necessarily show the character escaping, all you see is black when you get the call. So it may be you did not escape. Or it could have been the power of the other six human souls during the Omega Flowey fight that saved the character if they did get out.
I feel like arguing the soul absorption thing. It's not that humans can't absorb monster souls, it's that monster souls, excluding boss monster souls like Asgore and Toriel, aren't powerful enough to exist outside of their bodies so they vanish along with the monster. Boss monster souls exist for only a few moments after the monster in question has turned to dust, which is probably why Flowey destroys Asgore's soul after he kills him so you can't claim it.
*OBJECTION!* you said that the human got out of the underground, but that simply isn't possible, think about it, at the end of true mercy ending, Alphys talks about using the human internet, so if they couldn't get internet from the surface, (desk slam) Then it likely that they couldn't get phone lines or mobile data either!
Oshachu7755 I have a solution to this...a very in depth explanation on the nature of the barrier and my theory on how electronics and cell phone data can work maaaaaaaaaagic ;) heh
Oshachu7755 Who really knows what happened??? For all we know, Frisk could have died, or the destruction of Omega Flowey caused a temporary hole in the barrier, or maybe Frisk is simply wandering around aimlessly in some weird, dark realm. I can't say for sure.
Okay, got a lot more reply's on this comment than expected so let's knock them out one at a time RwbyTale : What type of magic, because there are 3 different types, 1. Monster magic, then the power wouldn't be strong enough, 2. Magic tricks, then I have no idea on how they got out like that or 3. IDK magic, because that makes the most scene to me! NinjaPotatoLord: That's true, I personally like to believe that Frisk died, and they forgot to reset or something, that would explain why they appear right where they last saved, but that's just me. Beren R: That could make sense, but that doesn't explain why no monsters have contacted humans for help Taan Wallbanks: What difference does that make, I am aware that Toriel does give Frisk their phone, but I personally cannot tell what difference it makes. (It could easily be me just being dumb though.)
I do agree that Alphys is smart, but I have a pretty bizzare theory (thats probably incorrect)about humans and souls.Human souls can persist after death not because of determination, but because of magic, apparently in the UnderTale universe magic is very real and even though mostly monsters have the power of magic humans also harness magic.Determination allows us to keep moving forward (or back)and I believe that Frisk can come back to life after being killed again and again because determination or a big amount of it allows us to bring back the dead, reset, save, load etc. but MAGIC is the one that makes human souls able to persist after death
I really liked this video. It all makes sense about Alphys. She's kind of mysterious in some ways. 😂😝 A couple of my favorite characters are Chara and Napstablook.
This video was amazing! I'm so glad you're able to keep your channel going! Hey, how's about making an episode for Chara or Asriel? Neither CHARActer are explained that well ( ;) ) and I'd love to learn more!
When you at Alphy's computer, and it says "it's opened to some kind of puzzle in Snowdin", that's because Alphys made the tile puzzle in Snowdin and the reason it turned out to be a straight path was because Alphys monitored the puzzle using her computer, and changed it to a path so you wouldn't get hurt
every second is a second closer to death and you never know when death is it could happen in 50 years, it could happen right now people try to fill it with as much fun as they can but sometimes, that just can't happen so you wonder why existence has to exist when it has a beginning and an end Nothing can be eternal Eternal has no meaning Everything has a beginning and an end even with eternal life you would die when the time comes nothing is eternal Eternal happiness is impossible
KarimTheGamer ' Actually if when you battle him you check him you can see that he only has 1 hp and 1 atk. Sorry if this ruined your view of Sans but he is in fact the weakest monster in the game.
A, this video was awesome and I would love to see more like it in a series. B, If you do create a series out of this, Could you try a video on the Gaster Followers and/or Goner Kid? They're some of my favorite characters, and seem under apritiated. C, I really like Alphys' character. She can be so relateable at times.
humans could absorb monster souls, but as their souls do not persist after death, this would not be possible, except for a special kind of monster called a "boss monster" who's souls persist, if only for a few seconds, a human could absorb this soul, but this has never happened.
Hello Underlab!!! I saw this video, and I LOVE your video's, and this may be off topic, but I was thinking about the alphys neo fight I saw on RU-vid, and alphys has gaster blasters, it would kinda make sence because she worked with gaster before, and maybe gaster gave his power to sans and alphys, the ones he trust most. But hey! That's just a theory!
Boureanu Tudor What evidence do you have for this? We see the player absorbing the other human souls and Asriel absorbing other monster souls, so where's your evidence?
LeRueTheDay In the game alphys said That a human cant absorb other human souls nor monsters cant absorb other monsters souls but flowey isnt a monster nor a human and asriel is The god of hyper-death
Boureanu Tudor Asriel is still a monster, no matter what he calls himself, and we see *the player* absorbing *human souls*. We see it happen, therefore whatever a character says is irrelevant.
7:01 when i asked toby about this, he replied that either flowey teleported frisk and himself outside of the barrier using the power of the souls, or the souls teleported them there
2. In every ending of the neutral run we never answer the phone. It's just Voicemail. You must have heard of the theory that the human dies when trying to leave the underground. You could have at least mentioned it
Another thing about Alphys's name is that it is also nearly an anagram of "Sylph" which whether intentional or not, is a mythological spirit of the air. What's interesting is that Undyne's name comes from "Undine" which is the mythological spirit of the water.
Believe it or not, Papyrus' rope bridge "Gauntlet of Deadly Terror" Puzzle is actually a rock with a bridge drawing painted over it, (That explains why it looks to shotty) .. You know who did that part...
You forgot something, if you kill everyone except muffet then on the phone at the end she says she should have killed you when she had the chance so she is not completely innocent
Danyaal Akhtar that is justifiable as you have kill a bunch of monsters to get that ending. Like on a genocide run undyne is justified with trying to kill you as you have every monster before the fight with her. She has to stop you. So alphys saying that is justifiable
IN WATERFALL THERE ARE ANCIENT PLARKS THATS SAY HUMANS CAN ABSORB MONSTER SOULS BUT ONLY BOSS MONSTER SOULS CAN SURVIVE OUTSIDE THE BODY. IT ALSO SAYS THAT IT NEVER HAPPENED, AND NOW IT NEVER WILL, AS THE MONSTERS ARE TRAPPED UNDERGROUND. THEY LIKELY WROTE THAT BEFORE THE CHARA FELL DOWN, BECAUSE THEY DIDNT KNOW THE TRUE NATURE OF THE BARRIER.
I had no idea that some of the notes in "Alphys" were in "Battle Against a True Hero" and "She's Playing Piano". I think that's pretty sweet; that in a song that I think Undyne played, she was thinking about Alphys. And I think that one of the things that kept Undyne so determined during her genocide fight was her desire to protect Alphys. I wonder what happens after Undyne the Undying kills you? Does she go to Alphys? Does she go to find Monster Kid? Also, my favorite character is Undyne.
So far, I can't say I've seen a video from you that I haven't learned something from or otherwise found the least bit interesting. If you're up for giving us a detailed analysis on the characters, I'd love to see what you come up with! My favorite character? That's a tough question, I like most of them for different reasons. I'd say I lean towards Undyne, though.
temmie.... what more is there to temmie but what we see? well, besides temmie chang. of course. i know there is a pic saying "the rich history of tem" WE MUST LEARN MORE
Come to think of it, how do we know Frisk ever left the underground? Technically Frisk disappeared as far as the monsters are concerned, not one monster actually saw them leave. It's also of note that nobody answers the phone.
