If you know Italy you know that coffee is a surprisingly big aspect of Italian culture- coffee is to Italians what tea is to the British and unlike Turkish coffee or caffe Americano, there isn’t just one Italian coffee. In Italy you can have coffee in the form of espresso, cappuccino, macchiato caldo or freddo, lungo, ristretto, or even shakerato and the list doesn’t stop there. The Italian espresso has become world famous and Italian coffee culture has influenced global coffee culture in unexpected ways… just think, where did the idea for Starbucks even really come from? So that said I began to wonder to myself, what did I really know about Italian coffee culture… when and why did this tiny drink made of tiny, foreign, beans come to have such a huge impact on daily life in Italy and why was I not allowed to drink a cappuccino with my lunch and why. In this episode we’re talking about everything coffee and why it’s kind of a big deal.

I didn't know the whole historical part of it, and I'm italian. It's always cool seeing how much effort you put into making these videos! (Also a huge satisfaction when you switch to italian accent when saying "espresso")

I knew absolutely nothing about Italian coffee culture so everything is new but I did learn a cool thing. The reason my dad drinks coffee after dinner is because on his way out of the USSR he was a refugee in Italy for 6 months.

A nice little thing that happens where I live (it's more rural Italy, don't know about everywhere else) is that we often just... Race to pay each other's breakfast at a bar, even if it's people we don't really know much yet. There's always a feeling of "ahhh you got me, I'll have pay for you next time for sure!"

I want to add a tipical Italian traditon to coffee. When you say italians offer coffee Just to be kind. We have also the “ caffè sospeso” litterally “ suspended coffe” : a person at a bar drink one coffe but pays for 2 in order to offer a coffee to a stranger that goes in to that bar later. Which make me think also to a thing We always use to say “ you can’t deny a coffee to anyone” “ una caffè non si nega a nessuno”.

I am from Ukraine and I was shocked when I first tasted espreso in Italy - it was strong as hell. As usual in my country we have coffee as long drink and got different types - from simple espreso to coffee+ milk+ syrup, also in 3rd wave coffee cafes we got "filter" - pour-over made drink. Now when russians missiles our power station and we got no electricity, pour-over coffee is most common to be prepared in condition of war.

@niclaci6093 Год назад
Loved the video, brava Tia! I felt a bit confused about "the way Italians drink coffee" because I never saw anyone holding the plate, but maybe It is a Milanese thing or It is probably common in very crowded places where there is no time (or tables) to sit. The coffee is served on the bar counter and if It's a quite moment of the day you can drink It just there, but if the bar is full of people and the bartenders are busy It is well-mannered to hold your cup (and plate) and move somewhere else.
@lollopollo231

Btw coffee is so integral to socialization in Italy that even I, a person who doesn’t drink coffee, usually say “andiamo a prenderci un caffè” to say “let’s go out together and spend some time chatting”, even if no coffee will be consumed.

As an Italian who doesn't like coffee (I've started to drink it once I started working and it's max once a day, 1-2 times a week) and living abroad, it's frustrating when everyone expects me to be a coffee expert of some sort, only for their jaws to fall on the floor when I say I can't handle a Moka 😅 But I mean, at least this comes from something true about Italian culture, there's nothing wrong with such expectations. I'm just sorry to disappoint everyone every time 😃

I loved the video but now I have a question about American culture: what do you do when someone comes to your home, like isn't the first thing offering something to drink (like a coffee)? How do you make them feel welcomed? And if you work in an office and go for coffee like every day does each person just pay for themselves everyday? At work I will offer everyone a coffee maybe every other week and everyone will do the same. So that just one person at a time pays but in the end no one has lost money on it.
@ninaciriello8346
@ninaciriello8346 Год назад
American here! Yes, typically the first thing you do when someone comes to your home is offer a drink. Usually coffee is drank in the morning and mid- afternoon. In the office I work at, we have a coffee machine and everyone pitches in a small amount to pay for the coffee, filters, sugar, and creamer. I have worked in an office where the company provided these things for the employees.

My “Nonna” is from Sudtirol but has been in New York City since the age of 6, she is currently 90+. She still offers people in her neighborhood coffee and sometimes Americans are baffled and think its something out of the ordinary. If i go to visit her, she’ll tell me to make my coffee off of the mocha pot before sitting down to chat, put the cup on a saucer, grab a cookie, and take the spoon out of the cup or else ill get dizzy because my eyes will be confused by looking at the spoon. She then tells me to take more coffee before the first cup is finished as we discuss the latest topics. I also remembered, my nonna is not a fan of paper cups or drinking coffee on Mass Transit or while walking. She thinks it looks messy and is not good for digestion because in her words “you’re running around and not enjoying it, and then your stomachs going to get all messed up.”

about the fact that many Italians hold up their saucers while drinking their coffee is simply explained because in this way they avoid soiling themselves as they move away from the bar counter to leave the necessary space for the other coffee drinkers in line behind them

The history of coffee and how it spread through Europe is super interesting, grande Tia! I never knew any of that. As per the way to hold espresso, when I order it in a bar I usually just leave the plate on the counter and just take the cup in my hands... Am I a fake Italian? 😂 Anyway, great job on this episode as well! At the risk of repeating myself, I'll say it again: I love this new series!

Wonderfully said, as always! As an Italian I guess coffee is also such an adult thing. It tastes bitter to kids, who by the way are almost never allowed to have any, and teenagers are basically made of coffee so you rarely see them sipping on an espresso.

Ciao Tia, scrivo in italiano almeno mi spiego meglio.

I love how offering someone coffee is like the baseline of politeness, here. My older colleagues, whenever they go get coffee, always offer me one on their way, even if just as a show of "camaraderie". Maybe paradoxically, I find, in my experience, that it's only when you get to the level of true friendship, a strong personal bond, that you can ASK somebody to offer you a coffee. I was never refused, nor did I ever refuse anybody. When I was in uni, my closest friends and I would often almost race to be the one who'd pay for everybody, and we'd keep count to know whose turn it was. I would almost feel guilty because I'm Ligurian,and therefore notoriously stingy. 🤣 I never stopped to think how much coffee is a staple, a ritual marker of moments in my day, until I went to Japan for two weeks. I loved it, loved the cuisine there every single day, but if there's one thing I missed is... well, the FIRST thing I did after landing back in Malpensa was find a bar and get an espresso. The sweet taste of home.

Brava Tia, bellissimo video, molto interessante e ben raccontato.

Drinking hot beverage is usually considered as a moment of selfcare or to bond with someone you're having your drink with, so It's kind of a pity to waste that moment if you are running to work or school with your cup on your hand, and the drink gets cold too. There is caffè macchiato and latte macchiato. The former is coffee in an espresso cup with a bit of milk, the latter is milk in a glass or cup with some specified quantity of coffee that i don't remember and ,you are right, cappuccino is milk with more coffee than latte macchiato and the foam. A "caffè macchiato" is a cup of espresso coffee (25-35ml) with just a drop of milk, hot or cold depending on customer's request. A cappuccino contains an espresso coffee (25 ml) and fresh whole cow's milk (100 ml), frothed by means of a vaporizer. The final volume of the cappuccino will be 200-250 ml.
