Eh, it really depends. Butted maille is nowhere near as durable and strong as riveted maille, but that doesn’t render butted maille completely useless. It may be obsolete in comparison to riveted maille, but butted maille can be a life saver if you had to mass produce hauberks, coifs, etc. I for one have made both, and I have to say that butted maille takes a fraction of the time it takes to make riveted maille. Riveted maille also requires much greater grip strength to make.
@@GremShrub_0426 yeah butted mail would be useful if they used it like you describe however butted mail was NEVER used. There is no historical evidence it has ever been used in combat.
@@WoofyMcDoodleyup, I think I wrote it in a way that sounded like I was saying that 😓 I was more so saying in a modern sense, apologies for the miscommunication.
Though riveted mail is admirable and quite advantageous armor versus blades, not everyone who makes this stuff is routing a stronghold two months from now. Many times it is only being used for cosplay purposes and butted mail does absolutely fine for this. I've used both and never heard any gripes or taunts about wearing butted mail at the dozens of renfaires I've attended over the years.
Use 14 gauge wire instead of 16. It’s too thin and doesn’t look good. Also maybe make your links smaller in diameter, tighter links look cleaner and are stronger.
i think your ratio is off. will make it lighter and faster to build but i like the look of the 5 ratio. meaning the loop is 5 times the size of the wire.
